But he utterly fails to understand that he would be censored, harassed, arrested and threatened with imprisonment for making that very same posting in his favorite Communist totalitarian regime. The world has witnessed exactly that with the heroic Chinese Doctor that was killed by this virus after being arrested by Communist police for just warning about the dangers of this virus.

We pray for Bart and hope that one day he finally comes to his senses and realizes the freedoms that he enjoys on this leading American talk forum.
:(
You've obviously missed that part of reality where the only meaningful and objective criticism of the CPC actually comes from leftists both inside and outside the PRC. Or is it that you're more comfortable repeating jingoist nonsense?

Absolute nonsense. One does not need to be a leftist to comment on obvious restrictions of speech.

We are very comfortable telling you is that it is impossible to have a free discussion on the virus on Communist Chinese forums.

The regime has been banning social media users for even daring to discuss the issue. Many threatened with prison and other retribution. We have all heard about the heroic Doctor that spoke out.

We have greater freedom to discuss the virus on the social media here. That is just the reality. Nobody disputes this.

Not even Bart, which is why she quickly runs away to the alleged Ukraine bribery whenever the speech crackdown on the virus is bought up.

Bart has no response to the speech crackdown because he is caught defending an indedefensible position.

The user who caused me to think about this question posted 14 new threads (so far) today.

You're not even remotely in the same ball park.
14? Where? I missed them.
His threads have made want to check the GPPD section more often than ever.

I think I know who you're talking about. But honestly, his threads are better than those of many posters who aren't new users (hint: look for bait). Just put him on ignore if you don't like it. I don't know if I'd support this idea of censure. That being said, I wonder if it's possible to force users to wait a period of time in between posting threads (kind of like what they do with individual posts, but longer). I think this idea it would give TT time to process and digest each thread more easily.

I judge countries by their own standards and America is failing lamentably by its own standards.

So whether America has greater freedom or not is disputable, and I dispute it. And my grounds of disputation is relevance.

I don't judge China by American standards. I judge America by American standards and Ukraine is a colossal corruption scandal directed by Trump.

We are discussing freedom of speech specifically with regard to this virus outbreak. In that regard, Americans are free to discuss the virus on social media without being harassed and imprisoned. Free discussion of this virus is not allowed in China. That is not disputable.

You completely fail to see that the Chinese desire the same freedom and that is why this totalitarian regime is doomed to fail, on it's own, with zero American intervention.

It is already starting to crumble amid the public outcry over brutal social media crackdowns.
When this totalitarian regime finally does topple, and the people gain more speech freedom, our poor Bartleby will have egg on his face!

So why is America covertly and overtly trying to meddle in Chinese affairs if its government will fall with zero American intervention?

The Chinese public outcry over the brutal speech shutdowns could very well lead to the toppling of this totalitarian regime.

That will happen irregardless of any American "meddling" you allege. It is up to the Chinese people.

The speech crackdowns were a blunder move. Cracking down on online discussion of a virus outbreak online is simply not a winning proposition in 2020.
The Communist government knows it was a blunder move and is now trying to save face by canning some leaders, but it may be too late.

What a wonderful time it is. We hopefully say good bye and good riddance to this worthless authoritarian regime.

My standard is a government that allows for free online discussion of the virus outbreak; not censorship, crackdowns and arrest.

You see, that is my standard for a government. Any type of government.

We welcome a new Communist regime that accords its citizens this modicum of speech rights.

How ironic it is that you enjoy those free discussion rights on this American forum but wish to deny those very same freedoms to your Chinese comrades.

Hypocrite!

True. But in this case, you were alleging that all leftists are blindly loyal to China. The vast majority of informed and objective criticisms of the CPC come from leftists- 99%. I'm giving others 1% here out of generosity. The left has been doing so for decades as part of a principled campaign of systemic criticism of the CPC and other state-capitalist regimes. Many do so at great professional and personal cost. You do it at a very superficial level.

We are very comfortable telling you is that it is impossible to have a free discussion on the virus on Communist Chinese forums.

Yes. It is also obvious that your level of information and interest in the topic can be objectively called nonexistent. The repression and persecution experienced by that doctor were noted and denounced before you even took this case up as a convenient cause celebre.

We have greater freedom to discuss the virus on the social media here. That is just the reality. Nobody disputes this.
Nobody disputes this, yet you choose to repeat a fact we all agree with, as if it was some personal victory.

No, that ISN'T your standard. You didn't like the Chinese government 1 month ago, ten months ago, or ten years ago. it has nothing to do with their handling of the virus. You're just focusing on emotive events rather than ideas, ie exploiting a health crisis. Leftists around the world have been denouncing the CPC for decades, and you haven't got anywhere near as sophisticated or principled argument as theirs.

Wrong. I have called upon Bart long ago to denounce the treatment of this Doctor. No response.
He cannot bear to criticize this totalitarian regime,

This Doctor was harassed and arrested for merely discussing and warning others about the virus. And then likely neglected/killed when he got infected.
When are we ever going to hear any criticism from you on how this Doctor was grossly mistreated and killed by your Communist friends?

I have stated my standard with regard to basic speech rights. You cannot speak to my standard. Only I can. I had no opinion or particular interest about the Chinese government years ago.

This handling of the virus outbreak and the Doctor only served to shine the light on this totalitarian regime's utter disregard to basic speech rights.
I am fully open to a Communist government that is compatible with at least a modicum of free speech rights. Clearly this one is not.

The Chinese people are angry at the social media censorship and we see that this totalitarian regime might be in danger of crumbling.

His death triggered a wave of grief and anger among Chinese social media users, many of whom were already frustrated with the government’s handling of an outbreak that has killed hundreds and infected thousands in China.
Some who were more critical of the government included the hashtag #IWantFreedomOfSpeech in their posts, but that hashtag was censored on Weibo.

Correct. America will not be involved.
The angry people will choose to topple this regime that has censored and harassed online discussion of this virus.
And the people will finally be able to hold free online discussion over there just like you do over here.
It will be a truly wonderful event that everyone should welcome.

I can't see any sign of popular support for regime change in China despite all the American meddling.

Han nationalism is strong and the Chinese are not going to be subjugated by Western powers again.

Given Venezuela remains free despite medddling, I think your dreams of regime change will be dashed.

Correct....

It is 2020 my dear Bartelby and the good Chinese people desire the same online freedoms that you enjoy here but hypocritically wish to deny them.
The tightening of social media and increased censorship belies your claims that all is well over there.
We all need to understand that any regime that denies its citizens even the modicum of free speech rights is bound to fail from within.
Your favorite totalitarian regime's days are numbered. We say, "Good riddance!".

This totalitarian regime will topple from within as its leaders have covered up the virus for weeks before alerting the public. More concerned with shutting down internet.
Why? Because human lives are expendable to ruthless Communist regimes. America applauds the Chinese people and welcomes this wonderful regime change.
We say shame on you for supporting them!

I got the metaphor, but as an analogy it fails because getting tanked has potential health consequences to the person getting drunk and to other people. It is a public health issue. Posting in a forum isn't. Also, the volume of posting and the quality of the posts therein often are not correlated at all.

But I think what @tonylg meant is that there should be some control to prevent spamming from users, which is a more accurate description of what could be construed as a real problem. Then it is not about how many posts someone makes, but about whether those posts become a nuisance to the correct functioning of the forum and to other users. Restricting that is a valid goal, and it doesn't fall into censorship more by virtue of the venue (a public forum privately owned versus a public space) than anything else though.
Huh ... ttw is a health consequence ... we could be jogging all these hours.

Dunderhead. Your favorite bungling President Xi has been caught covering up the virus for weeks instead of immediately alerting the public.
Focused more on shutting down the internet and arresting the brave Doctors on the front lines.
Sad!
:(

Chinese president Xi Jinping issued orders to contain the deadly coronavirus outbreak almost two weeks earlier than previously thought, according to an account that appears to contradict the narrative that local officials were to blame for allowing the epidemic to spiral.
The official Communist party magazine Qiushi’s account over the weekend says Mr Xi met the party’s politburo standing committee, China’s most powerful decision making body, and gave instructions on the virus response on January 7, 13 days before the public was warned about the outbreak’s severity.

So Xi provides a detailed timeline of the virus

You do realise that America is now in a 'cold war' with China and the Western press always quotes Western officials on China because they function as propaganda agencies.

You need to find more reliable sources besides Bloomberg, FT, AFP and the like!

We would quote the tons of posts directly on Chinese forums but the totalitarian regime has shut them all down.
Wish your friends had done as good a job with the outbreak as they did scrubbing the internet.
