Should/will Berrettini be fined like Tomic?

Berrettini lost to the grass GOAT playing lights out tennis. Tomic lost to Tsonga who, while a good player, has not been in good form of late and was easily beaten by Rafa.

Berrettini lost in R4, after winning 3 matches. Tomic lost in R1.

Berrettini was obviously trying, even if he was failing. Tomic was barely moving at times.

Berrettini doesn't have a history of tanking. Tomic is a serial offender (Tomic the tank engine).

I don't really agree that Tomic should have lost ALL his earnings, but I get it. No comparison to the Berrettini loss

So should Tsonga. I know there is a thread on Tsonga, but its tough not to mention him since they both played supremely pathetically.

@Towny Great post, all true.

All this is arguable analysis and, while not incorrect, is not something I'd rob a person of tens of thousands of pounds on the basis of. And that's the crux of the matter.

Wimbledon is run by bozos in suits. Not saying Berrettini should get a fine (he shouldn’t) but why fine Tomic? Lack of effort yeah? Right so because Tomic isn’t a fast mover regardless and cuz he has a slow playstyle, that automatically means he’s not trying? Give me a break.

Because they don’t know how to clearly judge a persons effort level here’s the rule: Any gentlemen’s singles entrants failing to get more than 8 games is subject to having his first round earnings completely stripped.

So who does that **** over? Tomic, Tsonga, Sousa, Humbert, Berrettini, and a bunch of others im probably missing.

I don't get it. Why should he be fined? The poor guy was completely outplayed by Roger plus he did win his first 3 matches. It's not like he didn't try. Fed was too good.

Obviously Bernie's Brigade will be looking for any excuse or comparison while conveniently ignoring the difference between tanking and being rolled over by a tank.

Rob?

Tomic KNEW he was not in a condition to compete. He robbed the next player in line to play. He is the crook, not Wimbledon.

When the young players faced the veterans and were not afraid of them, they could beat them.
Now, we make excuses with them to ennoble our favorite players, simply because we want them to continue winning.
How times have changed!

The whole best effort rule seems to become more and more interesting. Guys like Tomic and Kyrgios literally look like they let whole points and games go without trying to win them. Then you get a guy like Berrettini who just looked like he started poorly and got worse from there.

Guess i’m trying to say there’s a difference between effort and performance. Wasn’t just Berrettini who looked miles out of his depth yesterday, Djokovic was mostly a pusher but it was comfortably enough against Humbert who bailed out of rallies constantly. Just looked like he had no place in the last 16 of a slam.

But i’m not sure you can fine these guys for incompetence. Or can you???!

We just don't make them like we used to.
