SHUT UP JIM

My God this clown is insufferable

Him and Prakash are the most in-love-with-their-own-voices tennis commentators I've ever heard (for the men, anyway).

I find it so disrespectful when he blabs about other players who aren't even playing. And he always forgets about the other/lesser player who IS playing (in this case, Dimitrov).

Sounds like a guy who wanks to his own reflection and does it several times a day. The smarmiest, most annoying male commentator by far. Just shoot me. Gonna have to watch on mute from now on

Can't stand him anymore.

Very good when playing the analyst role but annoying as a play by play guy. Does come across as being extremely pleased to hear himself talk. To be fair, he is a good talker, but the smugness has steadily increased over the past 10 years or so.

The other day he made a joke about Turtle from Entourage, and when he realized it might require an explanation, he went IN

Yea, smug. It just oozes out of him. Davenport lost her patience with him once and I was here for it

A long time ago I came across a match without commentary, just environmental sound. A refreshing experience. All sport should be broadcast with that option.

Courier's offer to Sampras at the AO was misinterpreted. He wasn't being nice, he was telling Sampras to get on with it. I don't mind his commentary but I imagine he's a tough, smug character.

Good commentary is great. But Jim has lost sight of that and thinks he's the main event.

And yeah you're right about the AO. Perfectly in line with his smug passive aggressiveness

He does have some great insights and I think he isn't afraid to say what he is thinking. Agree he is a great analyst, as a commentator still some great insight about the game but needs to chill.
But sometimes he needs to back down and just let the match speak for itself.

Been impressed with Sam Query when he commentated the other night. Good insight, but not overinduldgent or overdone, appreciative of what was going on the court.

I think I'm more positive than not, although he can seem just a little too impressed with himself at times.

One thing I'll give him credit for: In voice and tone, for a former pro athlete, he sounds like a professional broadcast journalist. Very smooth delivery.

Jim is fine. No issues with him.

There are 10,000x worse commentators out there we have to worry about.

Shriver, Arias, Puig etc.

Jim does love to hear himself talk but I'm.a fan, he makes the broadcast interesting, has a good voice for tennis commentating and he's knowledgeable. I also like the McEnroes so maybe I'm.the problem haha

When someone is at a friend's house, and gets too disgusted with a TV commentator,
he should remember the wise words of the famous cowboy Jim Bowie ;) 〰️〰️

thats what the tennistv app is for. better cam angles, any court you want to watch - even doubles - and zero commentary. if anything ive noticed its jason goodall or someone british and they are never overbearing. 100x worth the price and itll work on your television or ipad
to be clear - this is not the tennis channel app. atp tour only on tennistv

Jim was a nice guy, ex-NFL lineman, at the company I used to work for.

Courier does sometimes seem like he is arbitrator of what is right. Luckily, I didn't hear him at IW, using different network.

He would be good if he talked less and stopped with the faux amazement. And stop talking about Rafa and Novak if they're not one of the players in the match, for God's sake
Lol I mostly tune it out man. For me, i'd rather just have the ambient crowd noise with no announces like many of the US Open outer courts. But the dude is way less annoying for me than JMac right now.

I think all of them digress to other players without giving enough respect to players on court, and add in their own tennis history a bit too much too. And yeah, Jim is a bit more than others, but not like Mac who is constantly self-aggrandizing more than commentating on the match.

Yes, among former athletes I think he's the most natural broadcaster I've heard, possibly in any sport.
he absolutely had it from the start...the first time I remember hearing him call a match was on NBC for the old Indianapolis tournament (maybe his first time?) and thought this guy is going to be a star doing this....it was very soon after being on tour and was a seamless transition

In my experience, Courier has always come off as humorous, smooth, and professional. Quite the opposite of others like Wilander or McEnroe who are too centered in themselves. Wilander is at least hilarious in that he makes you wonder if he's trolling at times with some of his takes.

I wish Andre had decided to stay with it after that Roddick-Federer 2007 quarter. One of the best broadcasts I've heard at the USO.

With all the advances, its stupid they don’t offer soundtrack options like language or no commentary, or players/coachez if micced and also Itd be nice if we could choose cameras /viewpoint.

god, I'd love to be able to turn these coaches off

but even the video of the players constantly looking at them and motioning and talking to them ticks me off

Sampras said that in his book. He said he knew Jim from childhood and recognised the smarmy tone. They have never been close since.

I've noticed Jim won't shut up during play, which is annoying.

I also find annoying Robbie Koenig's accent or maybe it's just the way he speaks, it doesn't sound natural.
Koening is an idiot. A very bias commentator who seems to despise Spanish tennis players if you listen closely enough. When he says 'shut the front door' after a shot he likes, i picture myself shutting the door in his face!
Courier was better a decade ago when he was really insightful and less opinionated. Now though he displays his own bias and talks over play far too much about things nothing to do with the actual match.

I personally think there is an expiration date for all commentators who are treated as if they are stars as happens with ex-players or ex-coaches. They start feeling like they are bigger than the sport setting they are hired to analyze and every word out of their mouth is gold. With some stars, it takes 5 years, with others it takes 10 years, but it usually happens. They also start preparing less before doing their analysis over time.

I used to enjoy listening to Courier many years ago, but do so less and less as his shtick becomes stale. The McEnroe brothers are also long past their expiration date. Commentary requires a fresh injection of new blood periodically also.

OP, who are good commentators by your standard.

For me Darren, Lindsey and Jim Courier have been the best between what ESPN and Tennis channel have offered put together .
