In 2008 yes, pretty surprised. I didn't expect Federer to lose at that time. Nor Nadal.
He did have a good summer and won in Canada vs Federer in a tough match but the US Open and the AO 07 matches made me think Federer wouldn't lose a best of five match against him anytime soon.
I didn't really know about Federers illness though.

Nobody knew about Fed's mono...however his form had begun slipping all through 2007...

When did you expect them to stop winning all the slams then?
I don't think it was particularly surprising that Novak won a slam - he'd made finals and beaten the top guys in other events on several occasions and was world number 3. Obviously he wasn't favourite to win, but I really don't see how him winning his 1st slam could be described as being a completly unexpected event - the definition of a surprise.

Oh geez, this deadly form of mono that Fed had keeps lasting longer and longer and longer. Before it was used as an excuse for all his losses in 2008 but now you're saying he had it all through 2007 too???? :shock:

For whatever it's worth, I think Murray has as good a chance as anyone to win AO. Fresh year, fresh start, fresh coach, fresh attitude, newfound confidence from last fall and now these last few weeks. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he finally broke his maiden in Australia.
Djokovic obviously has a good chance. I have some concerns about him handling the pressure. The media and the organizers and the sponsors are going to demand more time from him than he's ever had to deal with before and the cacaphony about him winning a CYGS is going to be deafening and he is going to be pressured like never before. I also don't think his stamina is going to be up to par. Ever since Dr Igor left his camp he's struggled.
Fed has been struggling at slams and if he gets involved in a few early five-setters, I don't think he'll be able to hang in at the end. Nadal we don't know what he's going to do. He's set his sights so low he could be out 3rd round, but Rafa has never been confident about any tournament but one thing I'm sure of is he'll try his hardest and he may surprise a few people.
And of course an unexpected player will make his way through the draw. There will always be upsets along the way - there always is, and one guy may get on a roll and do something wild and unexpected like Baghdatis did a few years ago. It might be one of the new young hotshots, it might be one of the grizzled old veterans who took some magic pills before the tourney. That's the beauty of a sporting event - there are always lots of thrills and spills along the way.

No. I said that regardless of the mono, which he contracted in late 2007/early 2008, his form was slipping already. i.e. before the mono.

I don't think it's me that's dumb. It's just some Fedfans desperately stretching but their contortions are getting downright funny now. But I've also heard over and over and over again that Fed only lost Wimby 08 because of his mono so I'm finding it most humourous how the 'never make excuses' Fed fanclub is making wilder excuses by the minute! :lol:

I'm trying to follow your logic but no matter how you look at it, there is no way anyone except you would think that Federer had mono in 2007.
Federer's random losses in 2007 have nothing to do with sickness, mono, or better competition. The guy just started to decline, pretty mildly, but still.

Why did Federer struggle so much in 2009 at Roland Garros and Wimbledon? Guys like Del Potro (at Roland Garros), Haas and Roddick were stretching him to 5 sets. His baseline game vs Roddick at Wimbledon is the worst I've seen it, with only Federer's serve saving him. And then Del Potro beat him at the US Open in a very lackluster performance from Federer. Did Federer still have mono in 2009 (and 2010? and 2011?)?. Does Federer have mono now? I read an article a few years ago and a doctor who worked with Federer said his case of mono was the lightest strain he's seen. It's very strange that it made Federer play so differently from 2008-2011.

Ok let me rephrase it: Raonic or JMDP have more chance of winning this AO than pigs flying. One premise is unlikely, however your 'pigs flying' crap is just impossible.

I was trying to make a point, that IMO neither will win this AO, that is all. Is it possible? Of course. But it is very improbable IMO.

Of course, they can't be easily explained... I'll try, but your insane bias against Federer will make it difficult. did you watch the matches? Haas pushed Federer to 5 because Federer was CLEARLY ancy about Nadal having lost the day before and having the big chance to win the FO. do you not recall he served Haas a 4th set bagel? Hardly crappy tennis once he got going..
Del Potro gave your hero a 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 beatdown a few months after pushing Federer to 5, you act like the guy sucks at tennis and isn't a worthy opponent or something..
Roddick beat a top 5 player in Murray in the Wimbledon semis, and was in prob ably the best form he's been in for years during that tournament. And Federer was just average... so the result was a 5 set match.
