Simona Halep vs. Eugenie Bouchard - Wimbledon 2014 SF
It's mano-a-mano time for the leaders of the young generation.
The first high-caliber encounter between these two young ladies.
Stylistically, I see a similarity with a Roger Federer vs Andre Agassi match,
the smoother stylist, owning the geometry of the court, against the fighter,
the player taking the ball on the rise, trying to rush you.
However, I would not dismiss Simona Halep's fighting capabilities. For one,
she's just bagelled Lisicky, after being led 3-0 in the first set. Also, she has
great tennis minds behind her: Ion Tiriac and Virginia Ruzici. And Tiriac
created once a Wimbledon champion: Becker. Her approach to the grass
has improved by leaps and bounds through this tournament.
Bouchard might have more power available (say on serves), but not by a large
margin, and Halep is able to sap anyone's power by her redirects,
just as Bouchard can
Both have quick redirects, yes, as a feature.
None of the two is too proficient at the net, and a small difference there tomorrow
might unbalance the scales, and long-term will determine their numerical
success in terms of GSs and extend their careers.
They've only met once:
2014
INDIAN WELLS
Indian Wells, USA
R16 HARD
Simona Halep
6-2 1-6 6-4
Halep, two years the senior, has more experience at winning tournaments (7-1).
For both, this is a breakthrough year at the GS level.
And surely, in the background the racquet war looms: the technical racquet vs the power racquet.
Who is going to take it?
IT'S TOMORROW
