Single Points that could have changed history?

Discussing in another thread about Courier's 1993 Wimbledon against Sampras. Jim had a set point in the 2nd set tiebreaker and had he won it, he could have won that title and be only the 2nd man in OE to win Slams on 3 different surfaces (Wilander having achieved this first). He also probably finishes #1 in 93 and is elevated legacy wise. Now that might be a stretch for people as some could say Pete just wins the 3rd set but Sampras displayed symptoms of cramps in the 4th set so who knows and it was his first Wimby final remember.

Now obviously match points are the most interesting because if you flip those points the match outcome is definitive. But I'm not sure which ones I think have the most weight as we've seen few in Slam Finals and 1 in the OE where Coria had 2 MPs in that 04 French Open, as some say scarred him mentally for life but realistically how much of a difference does it make for him (does he beat Nadal???). Pre OE you had Laver in 1960 win his 2nd amateur Slam against Fraser saving a MP, but how does that translate into a ripple effect? It was Fraser that Laver lost to at that year's Wimbledon and USO so if anything maybe Fraser wins less Slams without seeking vengeance.

The obvious ones of this generation have both been Federer connected. First, the 2005 AO against Safin and secondly the 2011 double when holding serve and in better shape to beat Nadal in the final. Winning the 2005 Aussie raises Fed's win percentage that year to break the record but does he still lose the WTF? Well anyway those are our best choices I think. I will however throw out an alternative to generate more discussion with the 2014 AO quarter between Novak and Wawrinka. By all accounts Djokovic would have won a 4th consecutive title had he bested Stan, unfortunately he wasn't given many opportunities in that last 5th set as Stan served ahead and gave him no MPs or much close to. There was one point however that could have changed things or at least came closest at 3-3 when Novak had a BP but Stan fired an ace down the line. It would be the last BP given to Novak as he lost 7-9. Now taking away an ace isn't too big a stretch, say it goes long and the 2nd serve allows for a rally Novak wins. He's then up 4-3 needing to hold serve twice. Might be a big ask but he did hold serve from behind 4 times after this. No man in the Open Era has won 6 consecutive Slams, pretty damn special.

Any points you like to add would be appreciated. Maybe one of Fed's BPs in the 08 epic??? He had a lot.

Roddick's MP against Nalbandian at the 2003 USO? :^)

Yes. But Roddicks missed backhand volley against Federer in the Wimby final 09 is the one single point i remember the most. Maybe it was kharma for that Nalbandian us open match

Exactly the shot that came to mind when I read this thread title. I think he would have won Wimbledon had he not butchered that shot.
