Singles only and Doubles only leagues

In Orange County, the Fall 18+ NTRP league for Men and Women is going to be split into Singles only teams and Doubles only teams. Each match is three lines of singles or doubles for the different leagues. The Local Southern California USTA coordinator told me that it is a non-advancing league with no sectionals and they are trying it out for the first time. So, we no longer have the conventional team with both singles and doubles players and four or five lines. Is any other section trying this?

I‘m thinking of captaining a singles team, but will miss the camaraderie of having doubles lines also and I don’t know if this is a step in the right direction to separate singles and doubles leagues.

I guess there were probably enough complaints from doubles players being forced to play singles when they didn't want to. It will be interesting to see how many "singles teams" there are compared to "doubles teams". Almost all our local leagues are doubles only. Singles is largely limited to club ladders.

Quite a few areas have doubles only leagues already, be it Tri-Level or just other non-advancing local leagues that are just 3 courts of doubles. Fewer areas have singles only leagues, but there are a few.

Interesting, no word on this from TX, TN, AR, or MS. Tennis is fun and good, so start with that idea. But, a team singles is so close to just playing a singles flex league or kind of a tournament, I guess it will create some new tennis "friendships" as most 18+ teams don't have 4-6 singles players (I assume 4-6 is a good team number considering not everyone cam play every match).

We created our only singles only league out here. The difference is there are no teams, just players. Most singles players want to play every week, not have to go through a rotation. I like that the USTA is doing this, but the team format is not the way to go about it.
