Six one team - How to increase weight and make it more HL?

Hi. I own a Wilson nSix One team 95 (290 grs unstrung, 18x20 pattern, red paintjob). Although I’ve been recently playing with a Wilson Ultra Tour I still like that racquet, but after using the UT I find it head heavy and lightweight.

I’m not a very strong guy, and I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to wield a full six one racquet. But it would be great if I could bring my six one team to somewhere around 11.5 oz, while making it more headlight, so that I could get a more manoeuvrable Six.One racquet.

Is it feasible? If so, what do you recommend me? A leather grip? Lead? Where? How? (I have never leaded a racquet in my life)

Thank you!

This can absolutely be done! To get to 11.5oz you'd need to add around .74oz or 20g. A leather grip adds about 10g to the handle, so you could put that on. Adding lead tape on or inside the handle would also work.
A pro for putting lead tape on the base of the handle is the balance is affected more because the weight can added more towards the bottom of the racket.
It's up to your preference--you could even do both!

Thanks for answering. I’ve never used a leather grip, but I may try it along with an overgrip in that racquet. Another question: how much more HL would typically a leather grip make my racquet? Of course, I know it depends on concrete weights and brands, but which is the typical range?

If I am successful with this, I may get the “new” white-red European version of the 6.1 team, since it’s not very expensive and I know it’s a racquet I like. I’d come to matches with two 6.1 teams and an Ultra Tour, all of them in a similar weight and balance. Other option would be to get a new UT... I don’t know. By the moment I just own 2 racquets and want them to be a bit more similar.

on the tennis warehouse main page there are instructions & tips how to customize your racket.
they also include some "rule of thumb" measurements, like adding 1gr of weight to 3/9 o'clock adds so much swingweight and shall be balanced by so and so much weight in the handle.
these tips as well have "rule of thumb" guidelines on impact on head-heavy / head-light changes.
then somewhere, probably in the academy part of the page, there might be some more advanced tools.

Go to here http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/LC/ and use the Automated Racquet Customization. Put in your existing mass, balance and SW if known. Absolutely need starting mass and balance, so measure it. Then put in desired mass and balance. If you have a desired SW, put that in. You will need a starting SW if you do that. The tool will estimate where and how much lead needs to be added. If it cannot be done, it will tell you. For example, if you want to decrease mass, but increase SW, that is impossible.

A leather grip usually lowers the balance by about 2.5 pts

Thank you everyone! I’ll have a better look at the resources you mentioned. But if, for instance, the automatic tool that @esgee48 mentioned says to put lead at let’s say 4 cms from the bottom, how should I add it? Under the grip? Under the overgrip? Thanks again!

You would need to split the lead into several pieces. You know the total amount of lead. Play with the Manual Customization Calculator putting pieces at the buttcap and above the handle. You are looking for the same result as the Auto Cust Tool, so the total lead is the same, just moved to 2 different spots. In your example, it may say put x grams at the buttcap and 4-x grams above the handle, i.e. 2.5 at buttcap, 1.5 above handle. Play with the tools. They work very well to get you the desired result..

I have the kfactor six one team and the Ultra Tour. Modded both with lead to around 11.7oz 7 pts HL balance. Both feel great. The six one team actually feels really solid with such a low flex rating. Both offer phenomenal control. Only downside is the six one team has a much smaller sweet spot than the ultra tour.

Weight in the handle will make it heavier [more mass => more power]
AND
it will make it more head light and thus more maneuverable.

General Rule of Thumb is to play with the heavyist frame
that you can still play with in the 3rd set.

I didn’t know about that rule of thumb! I may have to experiment still to know. I want to regain some form this year. I’m pretty lean, but I’m not really fit, and I can feel the fatigue in my arm after 1h of playing, where I start to fail serves, my legs start to feel weaker... (working 8-10 daily hours in front of a computer + surgery recovery have killed my old fit state). But since now I’m feeling great, I’m using tennis as a motivator to exercise. You know: playing a 2 hour tennis match is amazing and feels short. 30 minutes on a stationary bike feel longer.

Ah! Ok. Thank you for your further explanation!

The fact is that I love both of my racquets. My parents gifted me the six one team as my first serious racquet. I have never used a different racquet since until I bought the UT last year (in fact I went to my club matches with only a racquet, and either had a near friend who could lend me his own in case I broke strings, or I just had to play carefully not to break them!). I have tried the Pure Drives and Pure Aeros of my friends and I hate them. They are the exact opposite of what I like in a racquet. I can’t control the ball with these and they’re uncomfortable. It can also be that playing with my Six one during my formation years has determined the way I play (slightly flatter than most people, all court-attacking style finishing at the net when possible, some serve and volley points).

There’s an European version of the last SixOne team in white and red. If I successfully mod my old one, I may get one of these for Christmas since the price is just around €90-100... and I know I like that frame.
