There are reasons why Djokodal will not overtake Federer' slam count.

1) Federer was only 24 years old after 2006 AO and at that time he was 7 slams behind Sampras. Nole is also 7 slams behind Federer but he's 31 years old. That's 7 years difference !

2) Federer was almost 26 years old after 2007 Wimbledon and at that time he was 3 slams behind Sampras. Nadal is also 3 slams behind Federer but he's 32 years old. That's 5-6 years difference !

3) Sampras was already retired when Federer was chasing his slam record. But unlike Sampras, Federer is still active and has chances to add more to his 20 slams.

4) Both Djokodal want the slam record but competing against one another will lessen their chances.

I can't see neither of them ever catch Federer, let alone overtake him because the odds are stacked against them. My prediction is that Djokodal will fight for the second most slam titles behind Roger, and Sampras will end up in 4th place.

After Roland Garros 2016, Djokovic was only five behind Federer. Federer has stretched the lead since then. Points 3 & 4 are indeed the crucial ones. Djokovic might still get to 17, but 20 is tough.

So far, point 3 has been key. Going forward, point 4 is more likely to matter.
Point 3 is unlikely to matter anymore. Point 4 is already in play. Wimbledon would have been #18 for Rafa if not for Novak.
To be fair both Rafa and Roger have their fair share of being stopped by Nole. 2011-2012 he stopped Rafa from slam victories. 2014-2015 he stopped Roger.
If somehow point 3 happens again even for once then I think the slam race would be over for good.

Who cares about Djokovic, he is NOT going to get Federer's slam record. MAYBE he will tie Nadal's.

Federer fans must focus efforts on Nadal, who is only 3 behind but is guaranteed at least another slam!
