Slams with two epic semi finals

1988 Australian Open is one of my favourites

Top 4 seeds played two five-setters (Cash d Lendl and Wilander d Edberg). Wilander then defeated Cash in another five-setter in the final.

The quality was a bit variable but the matches were certainly epic.

Yes the 1980 USO was my first thought.

2 of the 4 quarter-finals went to 5 sets (with the other 2 going to a 4th set) as well.

Mac winning 5 setters against both Connors and Borg in consecutive days, after playing in a QF against Lendl 2 days earlier and a 5 set doubles final one day before, was Herculean stuff.

Most epic quarterfinal probably was Wimbledon 1949. All four matches went 5 sets, Schroeder-Sedgman (classic with mps for Sedg), Sturgess-Parker, Bromwich-Falkenburg (revenge for final 1948), Drobny-Brown, who had beaten Gonzalez.

I'll take this over 1980 because I think Lendl/Cash beats Borg/Kriek. Borg killed him the last 3 sets. Cash had match point in the 5th set.
I have a large soft spot for Johan Kriek, but.. yeah. And Connors made Mac84 play big time there, right after getting crushed at Wimbledon. Massive stuff.

Their 80 semi is a bit closer than 84 because it went down to a 5th set tiebreaker. However, I think the quality of their 84 match is consistently higher. Between the both players.

Kriek could beat anyone when he was on. His problem was the opposite was true.
What a shotmaker when on, though.
