Sleepless

It is tough when one has this happen. Im having a similar situation.
2 or 3 am wake up and then awake 2 hours or more. Despite exercise etc.
Think its the sunlight early that is the issue, will be something ok with time.
Good luck 3loudboys

Have you tried meditation? You might be able to calm your mind enough to get back to sleep. Quite often, meditating while lying down will result in falling asleep.

Another idea is to use a machine or an app that produces white noise. Or instead of white noise, you might listen to the sound of rain, a thunderstorm, ocean waves, etc. Alternately, you might listen to a source of delta waves or a similar soundscape designed to induce relaxation and sleep.

Some ppl have had some decent results with supplemental melatonin. This has not worked well for me. I tend to wake up with a melatonin hangover in the morning -- making it very difficult to wake up. I've had much better luck with the amino acid, Tryptophan. This works best when taken on an empty stomach. Chamomile (tea or supplement) or a Magnesium supplement might promote adequate relaxation to get you back to sleep.

Watch this on the loop

Thanks man, it’s only last night, not regular and not sure of the cause. Reached out to everyone as it was so strange.

Would prefer to be! London is cold and wet at the moment.
Don't know if Seattle gets as much fog as London but it is overcast quite often and rains quite a bit there. We could certainly use some of their rain down here in "much too dry right now" California.

Seattle forecast for today is for rain and a high of 14°C.

I’d take that just now - the Jet Stream hasn’t shifted and April was coldest on record and May the wettest so far. Sounds like I need to move to California so I can hit!

I am having insomniac troubles too. More often it's because of frequent urination like 4 or 5 times while trying to get sleep.
This costs me 2 or 3 hours daily.

Though I have tried one trick that works -- trying to sleep on my stomach.
Prostate? Diabetes? Pre-diabetic?

Prostate? Diabetes? Pre-diabetic?

I sometimes wake up once or twice a night to pee as well but am able to get back to sleep.

A couple of environmental factors are barometric pressure, pollen count, temperature.

I usually sleep better when the night is cool. We have just started running the air conditioner during the day.
Barometric pressure can cause issues with joints or other strange symptoms.
Pollen Count can irritate eyes, nose, throat and skin. We run four HEPA filters but still not enough for the whole house.

I track fluid intake with Garmin Connect though it doesn't track when I drink. But drinking more results in more pee and better odds that some will be overnight.

My Garmin also does sleep tracking so I can go back to bed if I get up early but didn't get enough sleep. It gives me a stress score as well and a quality of sleep score. It's nice to have the data so you can look at it and try to make changes to improve the numbers.

Don't know! But doc last year suggested that I could get diabetes by 35 since mum has it already. So I have to get tested for that once this c*****virus mess clears up. Usually, we would only get this issue during the rainy season but not during the summer. But I am experiencing this for a month during the middle of the summer. Btw, we don't have Air Conditioner either.

If it is a diabetic or pre-diabetic condition, you might be able to manage it somewhat thru diet. Ceylon Cinnamon (true cinnamon from Sri Lanka) can help to manage blood sugar levels. Turmeric, Fenugreek, Ginger, Bilberry & Okra might also help.

Thanks for those suggestions - I had a few medical scares over the lockdown and a very kind nurse suggested mindfullness which was excellent once I became accustomed to it. Did try last night but the mind was not mindful of my predicament. The supplements sound interesting and if this continues rather than just a one off then I'll take a look into them - did read a little into the Tryptophan as never really heard of that before and its interesting as the brain breaks this down into Seratonin - which aids sleep - learnt something new thank you. The Chamonile Tea is a good one which I have had before - possibly the most flavoursome of them all.

Thats why I have cut back on drinking late into any evenings - I'd just end up spending the early hours running back and forth to the pool. Not sure I could sleep on the stomach post lockdown - have to work off a few pies. @ByeByePoly can testify to this.

Tryptophan is one of the essential amino acids. Fairly high levels of this EAA in milk, turkey and other foods. Some claim that the tryptophan in these foods tends to make us sleepy.

But this might be an urban myth. Just eating a lot of food, esp protein & certain carbs, might be what makes you bit tired. Taking tryptophan, without the other amino acids, might be more effective at producing serotonin (and melatonin). And without all the extra calories.

At that hour an alcoholic beverage works for me. While it's true that alcohol initially can make you drowsy but 4 or 5 hours later is metabolized to acetaldehyde that can wake you up, those 4 or 5 hours are plenty for me if it's 3 AM.

Doesn't alcohol harm the quality of sleep, though? (Nonrestorative sleep?)

If you are prone to diabetes, exercising everyday for at least 30-45 mins is mandatory even if it's just a brisk walk. It depends also on how controlled your mum's sugar levels are and whether it's uncontrolled or she can easily keep it under check. Avoid too much of carb heavy foods and stop eating once your tummy is 75-80% full and avoid added sugars. The problem with diabetes is the host of other complications it brings. You must already be hearing about black fungus.

It might be dependent on the amount of alcohol consumed. That is, a small amount might help whereas larger amounts can be counter-productive to quality sleep.

Studies looking at the effects of alcohol on sleep have found that alcohol reduces the time required to fall asleep (sleep onset latency), increases the amount of deep sleep, and reduces the amount of REM sleep...

I think I had heard that those with chronically high blood sugar levels I particularly susceptible to this black fungus that is complicating the covid-19 situation in India. Is that similar to what you had heard about it?

Good advice on controlling blood sugar levels. For me it was a matter of cutting back on high-glycemic bread, crackers, cookies & alcohol. Gotta watch out for hidden or added sugars in food. White rice should probably only be consumed in moderation.

You pee in the pool? What?

This post is ambiguous ... I can testify to my pie eating, my sleeping on my stomach, my frequent peeing at night?

All I will say is the extra 8 lbs does not prevent stomach sleeping ... not a teeter totter. Also ... fall back asleep quickly on those 10 trips.

I have never had any trouble sleeping, but my new thing is some nights wake up wide awake ... usually around 2am or 3am. When that happens, I often just get up and go watch tv for an hour or so ... then I fall asleep when I go back to bed. Other new thing ... reaching for the earplugs. Wife unit goes to bed earlier ... and sometimes there is a wee bit of snoring ... windows aren’t vibrating that bad. Good news there is when you fall asleep on your stomach ... you only need one ear plug ... one ear is on the pillow.(y)

3am sunlight ... wtf ... where do you live ... on the sun?

Yip that's the one doing the nasty rounds here. I am assuming that @gn like most south indians is a predominant white rice eater. I guess it's all about moderation no matter what you eat- nothing like a good old morning walk/jog and having a controlled diet.

God looks like I am preaching! It's ok it's good preach :D

Ambiguity is the mother of all mix ups isn’t it...lol. Wasn’t referring to you in the pie eating ref but you saw my first foray back post lockdown and thought you had noted how horizontally challenged I was...good to know you are a fellow pie eater.

Pool is slang for the loo btw - peeing in the pool is most definitely frowned upon.
