Sleepless

That would be great ... and a good excuse to take a day or twos holiday to unwind and enjoy.

How has the sleep been lately?
The last few nights were dreadful. Couldn’t fall asleep until it was like 3am, so last night, I took a melatonin around 8pm and fell asleep around 11pm. I slept through the night but it was light sleep and I dreamt a lot.

How about you? Is it steady?

Sorry to hear it been so bad ... that can leave feeling rough. At least the Melatonin improved it a little and hopefully will help get you into a rhythm.

Mines been ok but its up and down tbh, good days and bad days. Last few nights have been fine but have exercised heavily which really helps. Would recommend an hours sweat on a squash court before bed ... really wears you out.

My eldest cat follows me when I walk down our street and to the local shop sometimes. He'll happily sit outside and wait and then walk me home.
The only time when we went into another house ( to feed a cat), they started to cry loud ( and it was the quiet one, that has some lynx genes).
But they do wait, all three if we stop in order to chat with people.

Usually when I don't sleep ( sometimes until 7 am) is because I'm reading a book( or watching a series), but then I sleep in, past noon.
If I play tennis daily, I usually need 10 hours of sleep, 5 won't cut it.

I think I am still adjusting the time after vacation; in other words, still jet lagged.

That’s actually a very good idea. I’ve been thinking about the same. I can reschedule my workout routine to bedtime and a nice warm shower may help the case further. I really don’t want to rely on melatonin for more than a few days.

I can’t sleep in due to work. Weekends are filled with all sorts of activities so not much sleep in there either, but whenever I get a chance, I do.

That and a glass of warm milk will help a lot. It’s an old remedy but tried it the other night and it did help.

That’s a shame as it does help. A hard workout before sleep will benefit though.
If I take an evening shift physical job and ditch the 9-5 corporate job, then I am sure I will sleep like a baby! Yes, hard workout is the way, I have no doubt - even though I would like to relax in the evening but a good night sleep is more important.

Do you play tennis or any other racket sports? Im in the same boat in that a desk jockey for 40-50 hours a week and we weren’t designed to be sedentary. A lot of work pressure on top of less exercise is bound to make sleep harder which follows. So would have to agree that ditching the corp life and living a physically more active one is healthier all round. My sons joke about being stuck in The Matrix, and there are days where you just want to follow the white rabbit lol.

No, but I love playing ping pong, badminton, mini golf, pool etc. from time to time. I can’t really sit for more than 2 hours so I definitely move around a lot. But yes, it’s nothing compared to actual physical work. I noticed that if I rest for a bit, for example, 2/3 hours in the evening after a tired day, then I am ready to go for another few hours. And by rest, I mean having dinner, watching TV etc.

I am with your son on this! We are definitely stuck in The Matrix where we have no choice but to go to work just to make a living. I sometimes think about getting out of this Matrix, really. I am a free spirit so don’t really enjoy bounded by rules and what not. You are one of the lucky ones who get to be his own boss!

Have you considered some light music to aid falling asleep. That or some meditation tape, it just watching the breath.

My main problem is to fall asleep because once I do, I am on cruise control. I think it has more to do with old habits than anything else. Also, travelling ruins my sleep patterns.

I love the idea of meditation but I can never do it. I am easily distracted, unfortunately.

When you lie down to sleep just focus on your breath.

Or you can count backwards from 100 with each breath. If you lose count just continue from wherever you can remember.

There are other famous breathing techniques that are popular but they didn't work with me.

I will try this and report back.

The Walking Dead haunted me for weeks, months etc., one of the greatest series of all time. Once you get attached, you get attached for life.

This is very true, we’re on our second time round and for that genre it’s really absorbing if not a little grisly.

Lol same here. I used to go running in these large, isolated parks and often imagine those walkers jumping across walls. I would imagine them coming out of just about anywhere when i was alone :) :(

Nothing. Gave up and changed my employment situation to be more flexible. That was the right move.

I doubt I've ever slept more than 4 hours in a row in my life. The more I try to force a normal pattern, the more often I end up just going 3 days with zero sleep.

I also watched it twice last time on Netflix and I realized that binge watching has greater impact than watching one episode per week over a period of time. I will watch it again but I want to wait until I have forgotten most of the details.

I am really very attracted to post apocalyptic series/movies. It’s the idea of surviving against all odds that I find quite fascinating.

The pilot was electric but each season got repetitive. Once they got to cannibalism I have up. There seemed to be nothing new.
I thought the first part (first 6 seasons) was about surviving the zombies and the second part was about surviving humans, who became quite hostile in a dog eat dog world.

I came to know about biological weapons in details in the series The Americans. And the latest Covid incident came too close for comfort.

For sure, a little sci fi mixed with survival, and a splash of horror or shock is a powerful combo. Gets the adrenaline flowing when watching which is why im pretty sure I can’t sleep afterwards. And with 4 cats prowling the house making noises makes you a little jumpy as well lol. Waiting for next Rings of Power but it seems to take ages for it to drop.

I found it so thought provoking, really. I used to wonder, what if something goes wrong? Am I prepared for it? What are the first things I would do in case of such an event? Etc. To be honest, especially after Covid, I tend to stock up, and think about having a precise escape plan from time to time, lol.

LOL about the cats. I always like edge of seat stuff and by that I don’t mean action. Those are just mindless stuff. I prefer something that’s thought provoking and out of the ordinary. No wonder it takes me time to fall asleep, lol.

Only natural really after that experience … my sons have all asked what would we do in a Zombie apocalypse, where would be we go, stay home or elsewhere? They have active imaginations … And it’s all part of the aura of the TV show, it does get you thinking, Covid taught us that a contagious virus can wreak havoc, although not saying we’ll be turned to Zombies lol, Gaming has definitely also help fuel some imaginations.

Agree … splatter fests are pretty dull mostly, always an exception, but anything that has suspense and a little ‘jump’ in it can be edge of the sofa stuff.

Imagination can run wild, I know! But it doesn’t hurt to stay at least somewhat prepared in case of any event - minor or major or so I feel. Zombies are probably far fetched but I still wouldn’t rule it out completely. That’s the part I don’t like about video games because most of the time, they are negative.

I’d be a hypocrite and probably am to some extent, but have been on my kids case about limiting time on gaming … tbh it would be fair criticism of me for posting on a tennis forum so often. But some games are pretty mindless and they become addictive, I remember the Fortnite craze and they were obsessed. Like most things though, everything should be in good measure. Sleep for one thing lol.

Not all games are bad I am sure but they are more or less addictive. I had a game on my phone but it was taking so much time away from me that I had to delete it.

Currently, I am choosing carefully as to which TV/Netflix etc. shows to watch so I don’t spend too much time on them. Life is short, I keep reminding myself every now and then. And like you, I feel guilty for spending too much time on the Forum. As you said, everything has to have a nice balance.

Yeah can get a tad bleak with to much of it. Good when you’re in the mood though (y) My wife just found Clarice the Silence of Lambs spin off, looks good so far
Did they ever reveal how it all started?
I also watched a bit of the prequel. That also didn't shed any light on the origin.

It’s a follow on and we’ve not seen anything yet about how it all began, but it’s early doors and we’ve kind of dotted in and out of it. The AO has been a good distraction.

I think it was called Fear the Walking Dead
Yes, I watched that and it was very good espeically the first 4 seasons but then it went all downhill. It doesn't reveal however how it all started but just when people first got affected. I wish the series (The Walking Dead) went on a different direction and shed some lights on its origin and found a cure for it, eventually. In fact, there was a time when I thought Rick was immune to the virus but that wasn't the case, unfortunately, but that would have been really cool.

Last night I slept well. I tried Sentinel’s breathing technique and counted backwards focusing on breathing but I got bored very quickly. I am such a child, so easily bored. But I will continue to try and see if it sticks.

Anyway, on a more interesting note, I dreamt about a snake and it was thin and a couple of feet long. It was on the floor and moving really fast toward me. I screamed and my brother came running and smashed it instantly by grabbing it and throwing it against the tiled wall. There was blood all over the wall. I was so traumatized by the whole thing that I woke up right after. I then googled the meaning of dreaming a snake and killing it and here it goes:

Dreaming of killing a snake generally symbolizes overcoming challenges, defeating enemies, or eliminating toxic influences in your life, representing a powerful, positive shift towards personal growth. It signifies taking control of your life, suppressing negative desires, or successfully conquering a fear or difficult situation.

This doesn't work you can try some meditation audios.

I used to put on some classical music years ago when i lay down. That helps also. But nothing with highs and lows like Beethovens ninth.

Count down with each exhale.

Another thing that I have tried with success is to review the day from the moment your got up in as much detail as possible. This tires the mind out without allowing it to get excited. That said avoid details relating to people especially if that upsets you.

Or if you read a lot of technical or academic stuff try to revise it. This also can tire out the mind. Don't bother if you forget some things.

5.30 this morning through choice, up stringing one of my sons Ezones. He’s got a tournament coming up and getting back into some serious training. My reel of MSV Focus Hex had run out so had to buy a single set of Alu Power, form a local store, it was the only decent poly they sold. The price of that stuff though is enough to keep you awake at night  I know it’s the Rolls Royce of strings and it’s held it’s price well over the years, but wow, double what I’d normally pay. And thinking about it, my sleep would benefit from getting him to learn how to string, and make some coffee whilst he’s up at it.

I used to reflect on the day at bed time to see what I did wrong or where I went wrong and how to correct those next time I was in similar situations etc. My main focus was to learn from my mistakes, but I am not sure when I stopped doing that. It was a good habit.

My mind is a very challenging place because it is always very attracted to interesting things and it doesn’t care about time or place or the need for sleep. It’s strange because I really love sleeping and I always want to fall asleep while listening to something very interesting but I know it doesn’t work that way.

Anyway, you have given me some useful tips and I think the breathing exercise while counting backwards might work. I thought it worked last night though I might have been very tired by then anyway (3am). I can’t sleep to meditation music or any music, but I am good with podcasts that are complicated and the guest has a soothing voice. LOL
