Small grip size as a crutch/causing bad technique?

I’ve been using 1/4 grip size for at least 5 years, with the really thin Tourna pro thin grip that probably takes it down another half size.

I know it’s too small for my hands (I’m 6 foot tall and have medium sized hands) but I’ve gotten used to it, and seem to have become dependent on it for generating the low to high racquet head motion. But it might have caused me to develop some bad habits: gripping too tightly, late contact point, using a nearly eastern grip but with a semi western-type swing path … if that makes sense.

I think it might be holding me back, particularly as I’m trying to play more offensively and generate more power.

I’m curious if anyone else has had this problem and/or had success moving back up to their “proper” grip size? It seems like a big transition because everything feels different.

I am 6'2", 185, so very relatable to you. About 4 years ago I switched from 4 1/4 to 4 3/8, so not much bigger but you are correct, it makes a difference. If the grip is too small, it will rotate in your hand and you will have the tendency to tighten up. Too big, you will have trouble pronating your wrist and keeping the correct grip. Overall, find something you like that is comfortable, but I would find a nice medium.
