So even Jim carrey can act brilliantly in a meaningful movie.

Raining hopes

Hall of Fame
I can't stand Jim Carrey. His mannerisms made me a fan in the first two of his I watched (Bruce Almighty, Ace Ventura) but by third I was he was no longer tolerable for a second.

Now Out of nowhere my fiance decides she wants to watch a "funny" Jim Carrey movie .

Luckily We watched Truman Show first.

And must say I loved it. Really interesting premise and genuinely funny with some deep moments of pondering about freedom and choice.
(If you never heard of the movie or haven't watched it don't watch the trailer, directly watch the film)

We searched the net for another of his critically accepted movie.

And now we are halfway through Eternal sunshine of a spotless mind

This too is both fun and interesting.

Most importantly when Jim Carrey tones down some of his carreyisms , he is much better at invoking laughs and can actually act.

Who would have thunk , trying to be a little understated with some bursts of inner jokester would be million times better than over the top physical comedy.

It's tricky. Over the top stuff got him famous, and that's what people expect all the time. When he does the movies you mentioned people realize he can act, but still want the over the top stuff. Movies are for escape anyway, so people want to escape however they can.

Carrey has done quite a bit of very credible acting, both dramatic and comedic. It's the old story, you have to understand tragedy in order to be successful at comedy. What did Woody Allen say in one of his movies, something like "comedy is tragedy plus time." (Might have been Alan Alda who spoke that line in "Hannah and Her Sisters.")

My name is Cuban Pete Sampras.

I hear ya, Raining dude. But I must disagree once more. Jim Carrey has always been a hit with me. His ''I'm Batman'' remains the pinnacle of cinema. The music to go along with it makes me laugh. Just too perfect.

I have a memory close to heart. I was still a little boy when my dearly departed Granda took me to see the Mask. Can still remember him letting out a laugh when Stanley Mask pulls a condom out. lol :p

I used to love The Mask- Animated series, poisoned dude. I never watched the movie. But maybe I will because after those two movies, Jim Carrey is now a hit with me too.

Especially loved Truman show. Very relevant theme given current situation of social media.Brilliantly acted and very very well thought out , everything in the background point to something. Heard Jim Carrey won the Golden globe but was snubbed for Oscar nominations. Too bad, his performance was very very good.

The Mask, Liar Liar, Dumb and Dumber, The Cable Guy, The Truman Show...had a good string of hit movies there for awhile. Funny guy.

Eternal Sunshine On a Spotless Mind....... words fail to say how much I love this movie! It’s funny, sad, smart, deep, intelligent, touching, beautiful!

Mind blowing masterpiece.
