So how serious is Medvedev?

Slam count for Medvedev?

One "next gen player" that finally seems to be consistent, but is it a problem that he is so consistent that he will never be a big title winner?

I'm still so surprised by his ranking and game. Out of the three Russian youngsters, I had him pegged as the least successful (Khachanov and Rublev ahead of him). He is proving me very wrong (or is it Rublev who is doing that? I don't know). Doesn't make sense though, he hits very flat and fast but oh boy does he rarely miss. Especially strong in rallies. Has these awkward strokes, backhand is like he is shoveling dirt with racquet so upright. Forehand too is very unorthodox. Guess it all works for him just fine. Kind of refreshing, in all honesty.

Anyone else see a lot of upside in this guy? He has the movement, consistent mindset and clutch play. Pretty much every stroke except the backhand could improve greatly, as well as conditioning and tactics. More aggressive tactics could help improve the conditioning equation by not requiring him to toil away 2+ metres behind the baseline all day. I agree with BG's puzzled remarks about this guy as a big guy who plays like a 5'9" guy.

I was surprised that @Hitman left him out of his nexgen great *hite hope roundup. He has actual character - not a troll or a vlogger - and a lot of upside to his game. He's my pick of the under 30s to actually go there and do it frankly, but god knows how he'll do it given how much work there is to do.

All of these young upstarts will eliminate Djokovic from slams just so Nadal swoops in and wins in the end, along with the slam record.

Medvedev, Khachanov, Kyrgios, FAA in USO and AO
Thiem in RG

Djokovic's only chance in the future will funnily be Wimbledon.

I don't see anything preventing Nadal as GOAT within a couple years, along with Djokovic reaching 19 slams (if lucky)

seems like an interesting guy, sounds committed to improving. not exactly a physical specimen though, we'll see about conditioning and overall toughness over 7 matches. ought to have a bigger serve for his height. you'd figure guys like karen or stefanos will always be there standing in the way but his weird-ish flat strokes can cause problems for people. best result maybe he sneaks one in? i think faa is going to be a real issue for guys in another 12-18 months as well, it's getting to be a crowded field if the big 3 ever stop winning things.

It’s hard to watch Mevedev for one full set without falling , and I’m saying it as a fan of him. He’s so hopeless at the net too. But at times consistency is all you need and it seems he’s the best in that regard in the nextgen. Quite level headed and mature for his age, big improvements in this mentality in the past year. I really want to see him rise even quicker

It's a wonder to me that the man in your avatar hasn't won at least one.
He's mercurial

He doesn't have a serve

Everything about him Is unorthodox and yet he still manages to win. I like that about him. In a game that is becoming so homogeneous, it's refreshing to see something different. His demeanor has improved a lot and i think that has helped him tremendously.

Yep, agreed. Love Med's game. He's actually my favorite player from the younger guys :)

A fan here also!!! Last year I saw him playing at the US Open against Donskoy at a side court(10 or 11 maybe) and i've been a fan ever since. One of the best(if not the best) backhands on tour.GO DANIIL!!!!

His strokes are the equivalent of Steve Smith's in cricket.
Hope he becomes as consistent as Steve is.
His serve is doing well this tournament.
The problem is when he is playing a player who isn't on self destruct.
He is such a hopeless pusher that any attacking player worth his salt can beat him.
Though he has the benefit of not being a guy who doesn't miss a lot.
I don't know if he has it in him to chance his style of play or even if it's possible to change it a fair bit at this stage.
But if he wants to win slams he really needs to get a coach who will help him become more attacking so that he can have more authority in his shots.

When was the last time Nadal lost to a player like Medvedev? His play style.
Good point. Medvedev has a very unorthodox play style with awkward looking ground strokes and wayward ball bounce on serve etc so kind of hard trying to find someone like him. Who do you think is similar in playing style?

Nadal is more unorthodox than Medvedev just by being an athletic left hander, which is quite rare in tennis these days. I just meant a non-offensive baseliner.

Nadal's Losses in 2019:
Djokovic
Kyrgios
Fognini
Thiem
Tsitsipas
Federer

2018:
Cilic
Thiem
Djokovic
Del Potro

2017:
Raonic
Federer x4
Querrey
Thiem
Muller
Shapovalov
Kyrgios
Isner

You'd have to go back to his dark ages of 2016 to find a loss to someone who isn't a big hitter/server, shot-maker, or Djokovic (who is quite offensive and hits the ball harder against Nadal). You have to be offensive to take him off his game.

I have a feeling he is a great baseline player but will struggle against the likes of Rafa because he can not deal with the variety he will be presented with. Khachanov has zero variety.

He won't have the mental strength to defeat Rafa. We saw Fabster dominate Nadal for one set and then Rafa stepped up and blew away Fabio. I doubt Medvedev will even bag on set. The moment will be too much for him.

I don't think he's that unorthodox. He's just tall. From a baseline perspective, Medvedev is very similar to Djokovic or Bautista-Agut. However, from a serve perspective, he's like Del Potro. That is a lethal combination.

Safin (another Russian coincidentally) is the last player I can think of who had such a huge serve with an ATG-level backhand. And even Safin wasn't as rally-tolerant as Medvedev is.

No he is unorthodox. And dont compare Med to Safin.

Medvedev When I saw first time, thought him to be a potential top 5 player in future and he is nearing that , also his game style is perfectly suited to one required in current times which a Solid game from the baseline with strong serve.
