So Nadal is planning to play Laver Cup, WTF, Davis Cup and ATP Cup

Do you not like watching him play though? Stress free at LC?
Look, the next 12 months can easily be the most important in an entire era, so I’m more focused on quality of play than on quantity. :)

But even better if all works fine and he can play as many events as he wants. I’m just a bit worried.

I just dont see LC as risk. He wont get injured there, and I need more of this....

Expect to see posts about how Rafa is clearly done and USO was just a fluke
Nah, Cat doesn’t bash Nadal retrospectively. And iirc he was unusually calm during fall season of 2017 with the exception of WTF. So maybe he’ll really just enjoy the show.

I’m sure his team and Rafa himself knows what schedule to pick best. He won’t be going all out for the LC but I’d like to see him play Paris before the WTF. He should be going all out for the WTF that would be a great end to the year for him and us Rafa fans

Playing Laver Cup is obviously a stupid decision. Especially if we remember he is getting injured too much at the end of seasons, and he wasted a lot of energy in USO. Ironically the last time when he had a decent end of a season was in 2015. He was losing so early during the whole year that he had no chance to get injured.

It is probably a sort of "business favor" to Roger, who owns The Laver Cup and wants to establish it as a permanent fixture of the schedule for all the revenue it can bring him in years to come. Roger will do Rafa a favor down the road.

Isn’t it too many exhos? What’s even the point? Out of these only WTF deserves attention because like it or not, it can give 1500 points.

Seems irrational to me.

You are right.

Agree w poster who said he should enjoy his honeymoon.

But agree w Yugram that he should play Paris and WTF. This is the sportsmanlike thing to do in many ways. First, they are both huge challenges that have so far completely defeated Rafa. He has all of one indoor title. These are the big ones, and he has not won either. The WTF, moreover, is a quasi Major. Can't skip it. Rafa's reputation for courage would take a hit if he skipped these tournaments. Also, for those who keep track of GOAT speculations, a significant rap on Rafa is that he has never won WTF (and never won indoors).

On the other hand, as mentioned above, The Laver Cup is just a Federer business venture; Nadal has been little interested in Davis Cup with the exception of 2004 and 2011, so why now? And the ATP Cup? The ATP Cup? Are you kidding me. Is this just a Pincer movement by ATP and Team One (Federer's company) to choke to death the Davis Cup?

ATP Cup mandatory? I'd blow it off it anyway.

My opinion is he should just play Paris and WTF, then take a rest till January. Not sure about the ATP Cup thing, but if you can gain some points, then it can be used as a warm up before AO.
The ATP Cup is next year.
Come on!
:p:whistle:

The ATP Cup gives them points, and it can be used as an AO warmup as they said. And the Davis Cup is going to be held in Spain, so it is also a"business venture". Why would he play the LC and not the DC?

I know you don't like Fed, but for me LC is awesome cause I get to see my two favs having fun together on the same side of the court. I do think he enjoys that aspect too.
Fed's just trying to secure that legacy after his #'s are overtaken by Nadovic; the major's record going by the wayside before he has a chance to retire! Don't get me wrong, I was just as much a fan of Roger's during his "hey day" of the last decade! After 2012 Wimbledon, I was wondering why he kept going as he didn't win another major for over 5 years and was being handled by Novak? Again we thought after winning those extra 3 chps. in 2017 & '18 that would be enough to secure his record, but it doesn't seem meant "to be!" All he really can be at this point in his career is a "good will" ambassador unless the "Next Gen" continue to coddle Roger in his senior years! I'm hoping he's hanging around just to play one more Olympic Game next year, but if he's still in the top 3 or 4, he'll probably try and go another 2 seasons and hold off the retirement tour!

I enjoyed LC in 2017. But this year Nadal definitely had it much tougher at the USO.
You're kidding? Nadal's path was cleared very early in the tournament with tons of upsets! He didn't finally get a workout until the final against Daniil unless I'm living in an alternate universe! You have obviously forgotten the debilitatingly long marathons he played against Khachanov and Thiem, finally resulting in Nadal having to WD during his beat down against Del PO last year! He was done for the 2nd time in 2018 where he also WD in the SF against Cilic "down under!" Maybe I'm just overtired, but that's how I see it anyway! Rafa should have and could have made his job quite easy by finishing off the final in str. sets up a break in the 3rd, but he decided he wanted to play for another few hours! Unbelievable; some GOAT! :sneaky: :-D

The ATP finals is a mandatory event (for those who qualify).
Oh please! People still come and go as they please! A lot of the time it's acknowledge that the "Big 3" will "shut it down" and not even bother with the last couple tourneys, including the YEC! The decision is made at the last minute as well sighting an injury to give cover for not going to London in Nov.! Rules are passed to be "overlooked" when convenient for the elites! The other players need the points and $$$ so they will hobble in regardless while the YEC is little more than an exhibition to Fedalovic with them owning the chp. as much as any major event! It's a rarity it actually influences the #1, but it can happen this time! :sneaky:

LOL! You do realize Djokovic has to actually win 5 more Grand Slams to surpass Federer, right? And that at the near age of 33 and having more physical issues. Don't get ahead of yourself. Nothing is a given in sports. And last I checked, Federer has been handling Nadal pretty well the past few years on grass and hardcourts.

Brother:

Davis Cup was the most important event in tennis, from 1900 into the 1980s, more so than Wimbledon. It was organic. Very little money was made on Davis Cup - yes, a bit for the national tennis associations but peanuts compared to contemporary tennis. It became a business venture this year, with the new format. ITF let some guy basically buy it. Laver Cup is an idea of Federer and his business associates as a way for Roger to have his own "tournament" so to speak, and reap money directly from the ATP tour after he retires. He might need it - his net worth is not quite one-half billion dollars.

ATP Cup appears like another attempt to suck more dollars. What is the point? We had a Cup competition. Davis Cup Was Tennis. The effect of Laver Cup and ATP will be to squeeze Davis Cup out, or make it completely irrelevant. So, it is like losing Wimbledon.

I keep trying to understand why of all the players, the youngest is being made to be superhuman and has to surpass both FEDAL now even though technically he has several more years to accomplish what they did! WTF is wrong with people? Just because Nadal's doing it to Fed doesn't mean Nole has to be just as accomplished when he's several years younger than "Fedal!" He has time; a lot of it! :sneaky:

The matches against Schwartzman and Berrettini were physically much tougher than most matches which end in straight sets. And even against Cilic in the fourth round he played almost 3 hours. (though that match was less physical)

^ Djokovic is only a year younger than Rafa :)
I said "FEDAL!" They both had significant time on tour before Nole; 2 years for Rafa and over 5 with Roger! Djokovic has owned this decade regardless of how things end! He took 15 majors over Nadal's 13, won more Masters events, and kills Nadal over the YEC owning 5 of them! It all just matters at what angle you want to exploit the numbers! Fedalovic each have something that sets them apart & makes them part of the GOAT argument/discussion! ;)

Exactly, Rafa's body is way older than Djokovic's body, so Djokovic should be dominating now.....instead Rafa has won 5 of the last 12 slams, while Djokovic has only won 4 :)

Cry me a river! Just spare me that Nadal had it tougher at the USO last year! That's BS & all concerned know better; even the blind fanatics of Nadal! :sneaky:

Wow, I hope you don't hurt your back with that contortion of logic/stat! The # that makes more sense of late is that Nole's won 4 of the last 6! :-D
