So the umpire cannot control the crowd now?

Irrespective of what you think happened during the Rune Fokina match , it's absolutely not acceptable for a crowd to harass a player for the rest of the match.

The umpire was telling Rune that he cannot do anything to control the crowd. I find that hard to believe.

Does anyone know how much power the umpire has in this regard?

Fat chance he can control it. What is he supposed to do other than to tell them to be quiet. Especially the crowd in Madrid where they are known to harass for the smallest things. You can't even check out a mark or ask the umpire a question before they start to boo, especially if you are playing a home player. Then they are even worse.

Ummm, what can he do, threaten to kick them all out?? Make them stay after for detention?? They are the PAYING CUSTOMERS!!

They pay subject to contractual obligations, which arguably some of the crowd is violating. The problem is only if there are too many troublemakers.

what would you do to a paying customers in a movie theatre or restaurant if they didn't behave?

He could have at least tried, chouldn't he?

Carlos Bernardes is never in control....

Harassment of competitor, delaying &disrupting game flow/ world feed are included in their tickets?
Yes, using their voices to express feelings is part of the experience. Hell, they boo a soprano at La Scala if she misses a note! Tennis players won't shatter if negative feelings are directed at them.

Players need the crowd. Crowd needs the players.

Lesson to Rune - can't handle booing? Stop being a jerk then.

Tennis etiquette has been introduced to players before they start to practice .Tennis is such sport in which ultimate goal is to hit the ball within opponent's 12m/8m part of the court and defend their 12m/m8 part playing with small ball and tool (used as extended hand). Some would think such game besides physical effort requires extreme focus . Score in tennis games is such that one of two balls can decide outcome.
Yet there are ppl who ignore specifics of the sport they claim to love

Was he laughing at Rafa and his threats to expel him from officiating?
Carlos was laughing because Nadal was taking his shorts off (they were on backwards, and Nadal had asked to leave the court, but Carlos didn't let him).

I don’t think the ticket contract language says that you can’t boo a player. So, what grounds are there to throw out people for booing especially in between points?

Harass &distract players in MATCH PLAY ,disrupting the game flow 25sec between the points therefore prolonging match ,possibly affecting future performance or winners/losers, negatively affecting World feed.

Bernardes to crowd: It's 1AM, LET THEM PLAY. Crowd : Boooo!!!

Once again proved for tennis fans , if they dislike player (acting in the match )/or are nationalistic (seen here with spanish /Nadal overly defensive to criticism ) for whatever reason they will even defend bullying & hooligan crowd behaviour . All in paid ticket contract, . Players have to toughen up, right, and not provoke innocent crowds who paid their tickets

non Spanish pro players should refuse to play in Spain, the crowds are scum.

Not tennis fans, more like football hooligans that don't know the rules of tennis , but go cos a Spanish player is playing ...

No one is or has been forcing you to watch Spanish crowds that you qualify as scum.

I love how people who didn’t watch the match wade into it with opinions. Very few people here are watching a third round Rune match. I watched it all and Bernardas is a disgrace.

That was the most obnoxious tennis crowd I have ever heard in my life, and I have watched an awful lot of tennis. He did nothing to control that disgusting crowd.
