SO, this should start a fight :)

Better get in before any drama.

IMHO

Seen before. Red ball and to an extent green ball is good because it removes nearly all the pace from the ball. Allows the use of much smaller courts while maintaining control on the ball. Good to simply work on getting the ball over the net. I don't think that any 6 year old is really to concerned with technique. to them its all about having fun, and it should be.

using the overlay to Show both plays at the same time is interesting, but there really isn't a solid comparison between the two other than a ball going over a net. re scaling like this really distorts the fine details that you would compare (such as ball trajectory, pace, player motion, etc). is it entertaining? sure.

Yes. It definitely can be. For some kids and some situations. 6 and under roughly. Moved up quickly. Hitting full yellow with full racket by eight if ready and in a proper training environment. Straight training wheels usage.

Dot balls dont work, it only impresses the parents who dont realize their kids arent hitting real tennis balls.

Just use dead balls for the little kids.

My indian roomate in college (doubles partner) lost to paes 8-6 when he was 17. They hit balls hard at him in training, not this baby stuff. Usta/uspta focus's way too much on form than effectiveness.

Ye, me too, even relatively athletic newcomers, because it takes away the fear of a full swing.

Once the mechanics are grooved, they can move on to normal balls etc and never need to buy a PS85 because they can't keep the ball in court with an Aero Pro Drive due to horrible technique ;)

(oh, sorry, I mean because they need 'control')

The graduated balls and smaller courts are great coaching tools when used appropriately (for juniors and adults) - where these systems (mini-tennis, Tennis10's, Hotshots etc) break down is in their mandated use for age related competition.
100% agree. I refer purely to their use as a coaching tool, I despair of making my 12 year olds step back to a green ball fro local tournaments, drives me nuts

Sweet. Because the main goal is being able to say you lost to Paes.

Wouldn't paddle ball do almost the same as those foam balls for beginners and little juniors?
I know a somewhat normal racket is used with the foam balls, but still not what is considered "adult" rackets" for the kids using foam balls.
And wouldn't paddle tennis promote paddle tennis?

Lol, lets see how your kid does against the #1 player in their country. She has good form at least...
My kid never played the ROGY. Yellow and full size racket from age 5. Doesn't mean I can't see the benefit of it to get the ball rolling. Then advance up quickly.

Big fan of RED balls for all ages for learning, great for a bit of mini tennis. Also is a very useful tool for teaching my girlfriend a forehand mechanic. Without the slower speed of the red ball in the service box, it would have taken many more sessions to nail it.

I never used any ball but the standard one but the concept seems to make sense. In juggling, for example, the hard part is transitioning from the idea of throwing one ball as another is at the apex of the trajectory to actually doing it. Having objects that fall more slowly helps with the transition until the progression is complete.

Not a coach but i think the red/green balls and smaller courts are great. I've been playing 40 years and like to think I have a good eye for solid technique and good players. Kids playing with red/green balls just look like their strokes are more similar to good adult players. It looks like real tennis. The video shows that the kids look similar to pro players so I must be right as usual.

I think you are missing the point, Chadillac, it isn't intended to be something a beginner does for years, or even months in most cases, but the idea is to get them hitting with a full swing confidently from the get go, it actually makes the transition to dull size courts and balls easier because they are already controlling length with spin, not gravity...

I know the point, its why i stopped my membership. They want 3.5's teaching kids with dead balls while doing nothing but a script.

Long term is useless, its simply to make parents who know nothing about tennis think their child is going to be the next superstar.

Let me know when the usta/uspta develops a junior who isnt 6ft + with a huge serve. Then explain how dead ball ground stoke ralleys helped them develop that game.

sigh, like I said...

But then, you are in the states, it's very different, coaches here have to be qualified and be of a suitable standard of play
Its not different, they push the same crap to the pro's here. I see you dont want to discuss this, have a good one

Red Ball Tennis is a more effective and more realistic entry point for juniors as it develops not only technique but also tempo

I've seen this video comparison before and even though it's great I think it's misleading. Sure it's similar to pro rally speed however once the kids gets older and especially move to a normal yellow ball the rally speed will once again be way off and won't realign again until, well they reach or if they even do reach pro level. The chances of that happening are very slim so for me the fact that it somewhat aligns during red ball is completely irrelevant.

He probably didn't "rage quit". He was a cool poster. I'm sure he had his reasons.
always liked his posts.. wonder why he quit...
He made a thread about a girl (presumably one his daughter's practice partners) who he thought might be taking PEDs because she went from fit and toned to huge with big thighs within a few months

Some users then started attacking him saying his comments were creepy and inappropriate

You weren't here when it went down?

Was being called a pedo
i probably was here, but don't recall,... i don't read every thread (i recall specifically not reading the thread on PEDs)...
being called a pedo,... that's brutal (especially if you're a dad with a daughter). i didn't read the posts, but observing that a girl (or guy) going from skinny to jacked doesn't seem worthy of being called a pedo.

kinda like making a comment about capriati going from skinny to jacked (later in her career)...

but since i didn't read the posts, the way they were worded might have a creepy undertone,... but on the surface (at least the way you guys worded it) seem innocuous.

thx for the recap

Yeah, I kind of felt bad for the guy because I don't recall seeing anything else from him that might corroborate the idea that he had an unhealthy obsession with how teenage girls looked.

Agreed, up to a point, but I said elsewhere in the thread that it is more about stroke production at the entry level, however the tempo thing is interesting and a bit of a bonus.

I would also suggest that in teh case of elite players, the tempo stays right up there, we have a world ranked 13 yr old at the club and his matches are insane..

Started with red balls...

He was never called a pedo. It was stated, by some, definitely most strongly by myself, that he had a long standing and inappropriate habit of mentioning the body types, frames, weight, "upper body development" of kids. Ages 10-13. Words like *fit" "toned" "beautiful" should not be used by a grown man describing a kid. In a bathing suit. To strangers. On a message board. Serving what purpose? He went on to describe how her "thighs look different" now. And she had backfat. And then ask the Tips and instructions board if we thought she was on PED's. A kid.

When I told him I thought it was incredibly inappropriate and creepy. He deleted all his posts, said my daughter was garbage because she has a one handed backhand, screamed "I know Nick B" and went home.

On topic. Of all the different balls, my fav is still the big red foam for promoting RHS and full cuts. They are still on the training table after leaving the orange, green behind. Monster short court games. The biggest foam ones, not the "36"" red ones. They are garbage.
