So what now from Hubert Hurkacz?

James P

G.O.A.T.
Has anyone's opinions changed about him? Was this Miami title a possible peak/highlight of his career or was this the start of a future higher level of success for the Pole?

Good player and a lovable character. I'm very glad for him.
He should embrace the net more (he has the touch and can ghost in timely). With his height, too much baseline tennis might lead to injuries and he definitely is more dangerous when mixing in the net play. Wouldn't expect him to become a world beater all of a sudden but we'll see. Maybe this title will inspire him.

Wimbledon or USO title 2024. Defends the following year. Rafter like.

I think we need to redefine “journeyman”. Tommy Paul is journeyman. Hurkacz beating Shapo, Raonic, Tsitsipas, Rublev and Sinner to win a 1000 level title is not a journeyman.

So what would you call him then?

Also, you do realize that Shapo, Raonic, ****, Rublev and Sinner have zero masters titles combined, right? Raonic and Tsits are the only solid players from that group and even then, the first one is washed up and the second one cares more about his Instagram account than winning actual matches.

He definitely rose above the level of journeyman to win this title. Also, all those players are much more than just solid. WTF winner, 2 time semifinalist in a slam, slam finalist...come on.

Journeyman is such a weird argument on this site.

To some a journeyman is one who reached the top 10 but was never a serious threat for big titles. For others it's a top 100 guy who spends his career exiting first week every time. And for others it means someone outside the top 100 that most of us have probably never heard of.

Raonic and Tsists are on a higher level than solid but again, Milos is washed up and Tsits imploded mentally. This Miami was just lackluster in terms of level of play for me.

Not much on clay. With similar level and staying somewhat clutch, he could see some success on grass and medium+ HC. Maybe top 20 going into ‘22?

Great thread topic.

I knew little about HH before Miami, I'd only seen a few of his matches. I am not a big fan of his game, but I sure like his quirky, self-effacing and modest personality. He's sort of the opposite of massive, out of control conceited egos like Tsitsipas and Zverev. I really like him and will certainly check out his matches more often in the future. I would rather see him become the next big thing other than anyone else under 30, that's for sure. But based on what I've seen, he's a top 30 player, nothing more.

He looks like he could make it to the outer edges of the top 10 especially when the Big 3 exit the stage and there are more openings. Hard to imagine that he has enough upside to contend for Slams and be a consistent top 5 player even in the future 2-3 years out.

He certainly impressed me with the results. For 4 consecutive matches, I expected him to lose and he still won the tournament. His game still doesn't seem to be top 10 level, though.

From my perspective as a Canadian it reminds me of Andrei Pavel's run in 01 for his Masters. He was ranked 42nd, beat Roddick, Haas (retired) and Rafter to get it. Made Paris final two years later and that was it.

Don't you mean Chris Woodruff?

One time wonder. He will suck on Clay, that just isn't his surface. and on Grass, his swing is too big so he will suck there too. He may reach the quarterfinal of Cincinatti, that will be about it

Really? Seems like his style of play is perfect for clay.
Beat Rublev on clay, lost a very tight 3 setter to Diego and even tighter 5 setter to Sandgren

If you can catch up to Rublev’s ball on hard court your swing is not too slow or big. He injected pace into Rublev’s ball. Has a smooth swing so looks like he is not doing a lot of work.

HH reminds me of Monfils. Plays lazy balls with seemingly no purpose, but then all of a sudden drills the ball for a winner.

Fail thread...no poll for the Pole. :-D

It’s unfortunate timing to peak at Miami, the last HC tournament until OG (haven’t czeched if The Incredible Hurk will play there). His clay results are lukewarm (beat Rublev in Rome, lost 9-11 fifth set RG to Sandgren) so it may be hard to keep the momentum going on the new surface. He should be more confident though and that often can be the difference between winning and losing close ones.

My guess is he stays in the top 30 (CH #16 now), wins a few 250s in the next years, maybe a 500 or two but Miami’20 will be his only M1K/slam despite being a frequent QFist in the Big 13 tournaments.
