Eugenie who?
Joking aside, good to see her back. It's been a while. Hoping she can go deep in a Slam again.

She has a chance to make herself relevant in Slams for the first time since 2014. Her best showing since 2016 was a R3 at Wimbledon.

She was fine when she broke into the scene afaik in 2014-2015. It's after she got all her fame and modelling contracts since 2015 that things taken a turn, personality wise and game wise
Yeh, about that. Bouchard and her family had a reputation for being, let's say, *hard to please*, and this dates back to before she had any level of international success.

Although I did gleefully cheer her losses for a while, at some point beating a dead horse gets pretty devoid of any emotional satisfaction. Although I'm still not a fan, I have to admit that she has demonstrated remarkable tenacity, and she's still young enough to turn her career around and pull an "Agassi", which probably won't turn me into a fan, but would regain my respect.

I did root for her when she played against Sharapova after the doping ban, and agreed with her statements on the topic.

I like her game. At least she gives it a whack and doesn’t make the requisite, annoying shriek so in vogue on the WTA’s ‘best’.

Bouchard will have a mini-fan in me for that time she went full RAGE mode to beat ********* (Also known as Sharapova) and make a stand against drug cheats so i may not have had making it this far but i'm happy for her!

Good to see some reward for all the hard work Bouchard has put in.

I wish this thread was about Andreescu, though. Her comeback from the knee and shoulder injuries is the good news story I want to see.

Swiatek will be a big test for Eugenie. If Bouchard can win that, it will be huge, but Swiatek has the big clay FH to push Bouchard off the baseline.

I like watching her play ...

seriously ...

I also think that she is very talented and could go far ... it is almost that her appearance is working against her , the pressure to perform on court besides being one of the most beautiful tennis players (and I don't mean that in a sexist way, there are good looking male and female players all over, Lopez, Alize Lim,Tsitsipas, Fognini ... ) - it is a lot of pressure ...

I wish her well and success in this and all future tournaments !

Agassi, Graf, and Gil Reyes?
Correct I listened to Reyes on Craig shapiros podcast and he was pretty adamant she was working very hard and success/ wins were just around the corner. In fact anyone that has actually had anything to do with her says she works very very hard and the 25 seconds it takes to post on intagram do not detract from her training.

I believe that the ambiguity of the thread title confused everybody.
Totally agree ...

Talking of one of the greatest talent of sport that after initial success suddenly vanishes from tennis (sport) scene and now is trying to make a "comeback" ... !!!

What a great story that would be ...

The thread title would have been too long, so yes, I did have some fun with where I placed the ellipsis. That said, truly, it's nice seeing her having some success on the tour again. Most of the references I've seen about her the last couple years have been overly derisive. I don't expect her to be a Top 5 player again, but then again, she did that at age 20, and with all her (seeming) off-the-court success and options, it's nice that she's battling back.

@RaulRamirez - Do you remember that phase of racquetholism Bouchard went through? I think the final count was Babolat, Wilson, Head and eventually Yonex. The frames she was trialling weren't blacked-out, and it wasn't confined to just the off-season either. She was still trialling multiple frames from different manufacturers once the season had started from tournament to tournament. It really summed up the quandary she was in a few years ago.

I don't recall it with that level of detail, and like the term "racquetholism".

I think @Ross K first coined the term? I just copied it (and mispellt it in the process ).

How do you think Bouchard will go against Swiatek?
I haven't seen either of their two matches so far, or much of Swiatek previously, so there's not too much behind my pick. But given Swiatek's scorelines (including a very tough first round draw) and already having success here last year as an 18 yo, I would expect Swiatek to win. Hopefully, Genie will give her a tough match, and build off this relative success.

What’s happened to Genie Bouchard?

There seems to be a trend amongst the ‘10s’ of the WTA....they hit some kind of heights, to then just disappear.
- Kournakova
- Ivanovic
- Bouchard

Yep, apparently WAP can be the #1 song in the US, but we can't handle publically available pics of a tennis player in a bikini within a thread with a provocative title.
When I saw #WAP trending on twitter for the first time I thought it was a movement for women empowerment #WomenArePowerful. Then I watched the vid and I was overpowered by its grossness and stupidity.

If by some miracle she ends up facing Anisimova in the next round in the first ever Kyrgios Bowl, poor Nico will be beside himself.

Second ever! They played earlier this year in Auckland. It was actually a really good match.

I have it on good authority that Nick was, in fact, beside himself.

Totally agree about the grossness and stupidity of that song. There have been plenty of hits in the past that had raunchy lyrics, but most of them at least had a catchy hook and some musicality to them. WAP has no musical value - just a basic trap beat and almost zero chord progression. It's completely degrading. I think it's only popular due to the over-the-top shock value.

As for the posts that were deleted, I guess my beef was that Bouchard has basically cultivated a sex symbol image outside of her tennis, which has been her main focus as her ranking got worse. Her fame today has more to do with her looks than her tennis in the past 5 years. It seems relevant, especially in a thread entitled "So, who had Eugenie Bouchard..." @RaulRamirez knew what he was doing there. :)

One of the posters (now deleted, so I don't know who) was asking why we were so "thirsty" with the comments and pictures. I do think that Bouchard is good looking and has a nice body. It was fun to post pics and made some stupid comments. However, from a personality standpoint, from what I've seen in videos, her attitude doesn't impress me. I doubt that I'd be attracted if I knew her. But that's a two-way street. I'm an older guy, married, and average looking. Although I'm successful, I don't have millions in the bank. So, Genie wouldn't be that impressed with me either.

To directly address the OP question, probably not many predicted that Bouchard was going to make it to the 3rd round. However, it's also not that surprising given that Genie is a former French Open semifinalist and had been playing pretty well on clay in the past month (making it to the finals of the tournament in Turkey a couple weeks ago). Her draw to this point was very good, and congrats to her on taking advantage of it. Świątek is her next opponent, who is a former French Open junior champion and a 4th rounder at the French last year. As such, Świątek is probably favored, but this is also a match that Bouchard could win.

I like comeback stories and I like how Bouchard recently expressed gratefulness to be where she is at right now. I'm not a member of the Genie Army, but I could see myself rooting for her if the attitude change and maturity is real.

If I had to pick, I think Swiatek will win, but am rooting for Bouchard. In retrospect, I could have titled the thread something like "Bouchard Thru to the 3rd Round - Thoughts?", but I meant no offense. Swiatek may prove to be a great player, though I think Genie having success is good for the tour. I never had a problem with her attitude, her modeling, etc - what she does is her prerogative, and I've never heard her demean anybody or the game itself.

Hopefully Genie's matured and if she ever plays FEDCUP again, won't refuse to shake her opponent's hand during the frigging draw ceremony. It was such a bitchy, petty move on her part. "I don't shake opponents hands before a match".....

It' the DRAW CEREMONY, snubbing the other player like that in front of everyone.
