SoCal USTA League Sandbaggers

I'm a USTA 4.0 player, played a USTA 4.5 tournament and went down in flames 1 and 0~. This year, I've joined a 4.0 Doubles/Singles league and am ready for the competition. But thus far, I've encountered two separate sandbaggers on different teams playing in our league AND our season hasn't even started.

The first sandbagger: Coincidentally, I was randomly challenged by a player on a tennis ladder that I joined years ago. Two weeks ago he emails me that he is a 4.5 player and wants to challenge me for my ranking/spot on the ladder. I asked him if he is a self/or USTA rated 4.5 and he just tells me that he's a 4.5. I did some googling and looked up his name and found out that he's playing against my team this season as a 4.0! When I emailed him asking about that on the same day our ladder match was supposed to happen, he did a no-show for our ladder match and stopped responding to all my emails.

The second sandbagger: I just got an email with our team's league schedule/locations and clicked on the first team we're playing against to see if I recognized any names. Coincidentally, one of the names is of an instructor who plays 4.5/Open tournaments. I know him personally and know that he is no where near 4.0 level! He has an all-court game and has been playing for over 30 years!

Anyway, so far, my impression of the USTA 4.0 League in SoCal is that if I continue to click away on team names and do some google searches on players, I'll find even more sandbaggers in our league this year. Sad, but I guess there are going to be a lot of petitions going around once league starts and the true 4.0's get pissed.

Welcome to USTA league play. The more of these you find, the more you'll start to understand that they are not sandbaggers - they are what I would call competitive 4.0s. You are what they would call an an easy league win.

The guys that win most of their matches at 4.0 league don't play 4.5 because they have more fun when they win most of their matches. And the guys that win matches at 4.5 don't play 5.0 for the same reason.

So does that mean I should be playing 3.5 next year?

Only if you want to be a sandbagger....

For the first guy, you may need a little more proof. He did act like a azz, but maybe he didn't like that you called his bluff. A lot of people lie about their ratings outside of USTA, you would need to show that he is competitve at the 4.5 level for him to be an official sandbagger (TM).

For the second guy. Certainly sounds like a sandbagger to me. Though, I can't see how this guy plays 4.5 and open tournaments and doesn't get bumped, unless these tournaments are outside of USTA. Only other possibility is if he's an instructor and an older guy, maybe he got a medical appeal for his rating???

What's the first guy's record at 4.0? Shouldn't that tell you whether he is a sandbagger or just a blowhard?

Quite a few sandbaggers in my 4.0 league as well. Maybe not as bad as your Sandbagger #2. . .but it should make for an interesting season. GL and let us know how it goes.

Are these two guys self-rated or computer rated?

If computer rated, then they are not sandbaggers, despite what you might think. It's not uncommon for strong 4.0s to advertise themselves as 4.5s outside of USTA league, or to play 4.5 and above tournaments - they are just trying to get to play against stronger competition.

But if they are self-rated, then yes, maybe they are sandbaggers. No way to know for sure until they generate some results.

EDIT: One more thing: Since you entered a 4.5 tournament yourself, you should be glad that you're going to get the chance to regularly face the same level of competition in your league play! :)

You are allways going to encounter sandbagers in the USTA league, only this time you know they are doing it. The section I've played all of my life is full of them, and guess what? Just because they are sandbaging doesn't mean they will win all the time. It may not be fair, but you will allways learn from the experience and you will always be the one who becomes the stronger player.
If you can prove they are doing it and they are taken care of, then great! If not, then use it as a learning experience.

I played tennis in HS (competitive team), but quit for 22 or so years. I just picked it back up and have joined a 3.5 league/team. I have a feeling after a bit of play i may indeed be at/near 4.0 level (locally)in short order. Am I sandbagging? Not trying to, just want to work my way through the ranks, so to speak.

I don't think that was me. I haven't blown anyone away by that score in 6 month.....my foot issues still giving me problems in league play.

Where i play the reason the guys who win 4.5 play 4.5 and not 5.0 is because there are no teams in 5 compared to 4.5. Only people who play 5 are the ones who are forced to because of being bumped.

So it only hurts in league matches? And thus you're gifting yourself a medical exemption?

What's in the drinking water in SD Country? - you, suresh, and Mr. Steroid Accuser - B.U.D.

your signature is qute funny!!!
I thought so too. The way his current form is Blake only needs one - and should only get it restrung once a month...

...'competitive 4.0s'.
LOL! Dude, you need to copyright that phrase. Sort of like a bank robber putting 'currency redistributor' on his business card...
