Unsurprisingly, Jack Sock lost his first match in Shanghai. He drops to 6-19 for the season and has only won one of his last thirteen ATP singles matches. He has one top 100 win amongst this carnage.

But if he can defend his Paris title he will maintain a ranking in the top 50. If he loses early, he'll drop out the worlds top 150. So Sock really is putting all his stakes on Paris.

Can Sock do it?

I hope he gets his head straight and wins Paris and starts playing up to his potential, again.

Yeah, I think he'll lose too.

I swear to God these trophies are designed by a bunch of 3 year olds.

Anyway, will Sock drop out of the top 300 after he loses in the 2nd round?

Nope. But considering he's unlikely (to put it mildly) to qualify for the Masters and he has a SF to defend there that he, well, cannot defend if he doesn't qualify... His 315 points would send him next to Daniel Brands, at around 177 in the rankings.

During the 50-year history of the tournament, only one man was able to defend the Bercy title:

If Sock suddenly returned to his good last year form, against Djoker at the full strength it as well would not be enough.
Sock's chances of defending the title are in any case scarce due to his miserable form.

I think Sock is ready for an exclusive doubles career. He actually wins big stuff in that environment, has fun and still makes plenty of money.

And doubles wouldn't be a wrong choice. If he feels he is not good enough in singles, why continue with a losing approach?

I presume he will enter and likely lose early, he appears to have very little fighting spirit now, defeat just seems inevitable.

Sock has the drop on all of us. He gamed the system. Got seeded entries to all the tourneys got to chill and party, gain IG followers after losing early and he got to ride PJs with Federer. Cant hate on him for that.

And yes he will still be in WTF partying and taking part in all the festivities... just not in singles.... however if people remember there was one year when Radek played singles as an alternate when the other two alternates had already left town(I think cant remember the exact reason). So he maybe in WTF afterall

I knew his year was bad but I had no idea it was this bad. What a total collapse and free fall this year. Well at least he has doubles I guess.

Just needs to make sure he plays Chokamund in the 1st round again and it's virtually in the bag! ;)

No. After having such a good end of the year last year he got cocky and did nothing during the off season, no training, no practice, nothing. He went into the 1st tournaments of this year totally unprepared and his confidence has continued to ebb as the year has gone on, he has literally forgotten how to win. Going back to Challengers will be a good wake up call for him.

Can anyone beat Sock in Paris? First he takes out "bye" (a mild upset) and now Gasquet.

Can he be stopped?

Sock is set for a blockbuster quarter final against Dominic Thiem as he aims to defend his title.

With two dominant straight sets wins so far Socks confidence should be good. With indoor conditions not suiting Thiem i can foresee Socks journey continuing.

I would like to see him pull it off, but his consistency is so awful currently, I don't see Theim having to do much than give him the ball back and watch Jack make an UE. Sad for me to say as Jack was the player that my daughter really latched on to as a fan, which in turn has inspired her to seek the challenge of being a Pro one day. But she has learned a lot about reality of Pro tennis from watching him struggle.

Things really went down hill for Jack when Troy Hahn left....or maybe when he decided Chipotle was the best prematch meal!

Well, socks gamble hasn't worked. Thought he would win today. He would have if he wasn't so unfit.

Unless he sorts his fitness out he should concentrate on doubles.
