Soderling: Best clay performance in history.

Nadal FO 08 performance was phenomenal!Hardly anyone in the future will reach such a level in clay!!And I'm so disappointed Rafa's game now is not even close to this kind of level!!
But if Nadal from 2008 FO play with Soderling from these year QF,he will win without a problem IMO!!

Yeah yeah keep believing it.

Fact is Fed was lucky that Nadal was injured last year. I would say that is the singlemost lucky event in his life.

But you forgot one important thing. Fed had mono for a good portion of the 08' season resulting in him losing many important matches and his number one ranking. So, in a sense you could say Nadal was lucky in 08'. ;-)

But hey, that's sports...

Soderling played like crap in the first set, so the answer is NO.

Nadal generally lets his opponents lose the match, he doesn't really take it to them to win the match on his on terms.

Soderling took it to Federer and dictated most of the points even though Federer was pretty aggressive himself.

One of the best performances I've probably seen on clay.

That is Ilie Nastase in 1973, winning it without losing a set, and doing it by Serve and Volley-ing. No comparison in terms of artistry and beauty.

Ridiculous statement. Nadal alone has played better on clay numerous times. This match is so overrated it's not even funny, Federer played a good first set and was average after that (his level of play in the Madrid final against Nadal was better). Soderling played very well and put a lot of pressure on Federer, but made way too many UE (49W/42UE) for this to be considered the best performance on clay.

It's ridiculous to claim Federer was completely outplayed by Soderling; in the crucial third set Roger was the better player but completely gifted Robin his service game at 5-5 with ugly errors after being 40-15 up. He repeated this feat at 2-0 in the fourth, and from that moment on Soderling dominated. He deserves to get a lot of credit and played a good match but this thread is total exaggeration in my opinion.

I was gonna reply to your post but then cracked up reading your sig. It rocks.

So he won US open 08 with Mono? Or did the mono subside for US open only to resurface at Oz 09?

I think you are a bit biased by your love for Federer. It's ok, but it shows a little.

Not so fast. Still Soderling is only a dangerman, not a real winner. There were some really great performances of clay in modern times, like the Nadal final win at RG in 2008, or Kuertens wins over Ferrero. Kuerten was called Picasso by Kafelnikov. Fedrer is a step slower now, than a couple of years ago. You could note that in his USO match with Delpo, now again. Earlier in his career, Federer with a better movement and anticipation, was able to handle the power of a big man and turn it against the aggressor.

It is a known fact that so often the best performances are before the finals. For years I have seen this happen. By the time many of the players get to the end of the second week they are worn out. The fittest survive and quite often it is not a fantastic final we see.

I think it was pretty much hidden, much like how Nadals knee injuries were hidden during the whole duration of the clay court season, even though he dominated it much like every other year until the FO.

Haha yeah...it was one of those Andy Murray moments. I actually think he is a good player for the most part, it just kills me when he goes into passive mode however.

My my..what a strange illness this Mono appears to be.

McEnroe said Soderling was hitting the hardest ground strokes in the history of tennis. Pretty high praise.

Hitting the hardest groundstrokes or the fastest serve or whatever is not high praise. A speedgun would tell you the same thing.

Rd 1 Borg d. Deblicker 6-1,6-1,6-1
Rd 2 Borg d. ***el 6-0,6-1,6-0
Rd 3 Borg d. Bertolucci 6-0,6-2,6-2
Rd 4 Borg d. Tanner 6-2,6-4,7-6
Qtr Borg d. Ramirez 6-3,6-0,6-0
SF Borg d. Barazzutti 6-0,6-1,6-0
F Borg d. Vilas 6-1,6-1,6-3

That is a ridiculous set of results. Nadal's in 2008 wasn't bad either:

R1 Belluci.......7-5,6-3,6-1
R2 Devilder.....6-4,6-0,6-1
R3 Niemenen...6-1,6-3,6-1
R4 Verdasco....6-1,6-0,6-2
QF Almagro.....6-1,6-1,6-1
SF Djokovic.....6-2,6-4,7-6
F Federer........6-1,6-3,6-0

41 games dropped in 21 sets compared to Borg's 29 games in 21 sets. I think the overall standard of Nadal's opponents was a touch higher though.

Anyway, the best individual clay performance in history will not include a dropped set unless the opponent is giving one of the best clay performances in history. Federer was not.

I wouldn't know, since I've never had it but I'll take your word for it.

I've had it. It screws you up for about a month after you're officially "over it", and I'd imagine for a professional sportsman it may take another couple of months to get fully back up to speed.

If Federer was recovering from it at Australia there's no way it would be affecting him at RG or Wimbledon.

Mononucleosis isn't the same for everybody and there are obviously different severities. Look at Ancic.
