Solinco Hyper G Prefered Gauge

Hello all! I've recently been in the market for a new racquet and have really fallen in love with the Blade 98 18x20. Due to the dense string pattern I think that a comfortable, spin-friendly poly will play perfectly with it. After doing some research it seems that Hyper G will be able to meet my needs. As the string comes in many different gauges, I'm not sure which one I'd like to try first. Can anyone here give me a comparison on how Hyper G plays in 16, 16L, and 17 gauge?

Thanks

Hello, I have only played with the 17g and 18g of this string but I would suggest playing with the thinnest gauge you can if you are not breaking them quickly. I play with an 18/20 as well and often look at going to the thinner gauges to increases playability. In my opinion the Hyper-G feels slightly softer and is more spin friendly in the thinner gauge. The ball pockets better and comes of the string with a tad more pop. I don't know if this is the case for the 16 to 16l but I would assume the thinner you go to more spin and comfort you will get out of the string but at the price of durability. I would simply try the 18g first and if it breaks in a couple sessions go to the 17g and see how long that last and so on. Its a small price to pay for finding witch string gauge is your compromise of playbility/durability.

Thank you! I'll order an 18 and 17 gauge pack.

I have only played the 18g in my 18x20 and love it. Playing it in a hybrid in the mains, just starting getting some notching in the Syn gut crosses after 15 hours of play without a noticeable tension loss in the Hyper G. Great string.

I really want to try it in the 16 gauge, but I personally found the 17 gauge to be too powerful and unpredictable from the baseline.

I'm using 18g in a Pure Strike 16x19 (Project one7) and I'm loving it! It's really comfortable, lots of spin, and tons of pop. Might be a tad much for me with me stringing around 50lbs, so I'm going to test 17g next. I've always been a fan of the thinner gauges as it provides more playability, and I don't break strings often. Well worth the try!

I ve tried the 16L (1.25) for the last 3 week, very happy with it, but it felt a bit harsh on my arm. I will try this week 18L (1.15), following the TW the stiffness is significantly lower, hopefully it doesn´t break too soon. Anyone has more experiences in a 16*19 with the 17 or 18 gauge? any cons besides durability? if the trade of is more confort and spin maybe worth.

18 (1.15) love it. Lots of spin, feels soft, holds tension well for a thin gauge, doesn't feel dead and plasticy like the thicker gauges. I haven't broken a set yet in my 18x20 frames. Also love Cyclone 19 and 18L, very similar to Hyper G in 18.

Also agree 17g is the best choice. I have not tried anything thinner than 17 but did notice a big difference from 16g. I am worried I would pop very fast with 18g.

I like the 16L. Didn't like the 17. Liked the 18. Never tried 19. 20 broke on the stringer while pulling a main at 55# (+10% prestetch)

I have a very open "Spin" string pattern and like the 17g over the 16g which has a funky launch angle. I haven't hit with the 16L which I suspect may be "Just Right".

My son uses same racquet. 18g @ 49/48 on DW machine. Re-string every 12hrs of play.

Not good control with 17g in PA??

I don’t think it was so much the string for me as it was the open pattern that made it hard to control. The ball would fly if I didn’t put enough spin on it and I couldn’t control my volleys very well.

OK so poor control with Hyper G 17 with PA, yes or no? o_O
What is your level, please?

I was using the 17g for some time now but recently switched to 18g a couple of months ago and I love it. More feel and really comfortable.

I will first try 17 on my PA.
You don't lose too much control with 18?
You will get more power, which you can adjust by stringing higher, but that can lead to the stringbed feeling stiff.
Not much loss of control. If anything, I get a more control provided by the extra spin, and less of a boardy feel with a thinner gauge.
The trouble I see with using 18g in a 16x19 pattern is that your strings will "bag out" fairly quick, which is fine if you string often.

17 at 49 in a VC98 doesn’t retain its properties long enough. Feel the ball leave the string bed really quickly now into its 2nd hour. Control hasn’t jumped off a cliff, but it’s definirely harder to manipulate the ball at contact.

I’m going to try the 17 at 52, and then string the 16L at 49 to give myself a comparison there.

I thought 49/44 could be a good tension for 17g in my Pure Aero... But I don't want a rocket launcher....

54? I would start mid 50’s and see how that goes and come down. I value feel so much that if a string goes to go 55+ I’m not okay with using it.
Yeah more than 55 is just craziness!
I will start with 49/45 to preserve my arm and see what control I can get. :)

Just picked up some hyper in 17, never tried it before. I pretty much only get 17 gauge these days. I think the feel, comfort, and power benefits outweigh the shorter lifespan compared to 16.
Just tried Hyper-G for the first time... And WOW!!! Massive pleasure in my PA!!! :D
I have 17g but I will try 18!

Shorter lifespan due to strings breaking or tension loss?
Guess it depends if you are a string breaker or not, but yes I was referring to sawing through quicker. It's hard to imagine that a 16 would last that much longer, after all this type of string isn't something you leave in for ages anyway.
