Some interesting Federer finals stats

Fedeonic

Hall of Fame
Since 2013, Federer has played 32 finals, with a 17-14 record (1 WO against Djok in the Masters).
Of those finals, he has played 6 finals against players aged 25y or less, with these results:
Basel 2013: Del Potro (25y 1m) d Federer 76 26 64
Basel 2014: Federer d Goffin (23y 10m) 62 62
Brisbane 2015: Federer d Raonic (24y) 64 67 64
Brisbane 2016: Raonic (25y) d Federer 64 64
Halle 2017: Federer d Zverev (20y 2m) 61 63
Montreal 2017: Zverev (20y 3m) d Federer 63 64

As we can see, it's a surprising even record of 3-3.

Now if we look at the finals against the rest of the players not named Djokovic, we have these results:
Rome 2013: Nadal d Federer 61 63
Halle 2013: Federer d Youzhny 67 63 64
Brisbane 2014: Hewitt d Federer 61 46 63
Dubai 2014: Federer d Berdych 36 63 64
Montecarlo 2014: Wawrinka d Federer 46 76 62
Halle 2014: Federer d Falla 76 76
Toronto 2014: Tsonga d Federer 75 76
Cincinnati 2014: Federer d Ferrer 63 16 62
Shanghai 2014: Federer d Simon 76 76

Istambul 2015: Federer d Cuevas 63 76
Halle 2015: Federer d Seppi 76 64
Basel 2015: Federer d Nadal 63 57 63
Aus Open 2017: Federer d Nadal 64 36 61 36 63
Indian Wells 2017: Federer d Wawrinka 64 75
Miami 2017: Federer d Nadal 63 64
Wimbledon 2017: Federer d Cilic 63 61 64

An interesting stat that shows us that Federer has a great 12-4 record over players aged 26y or more not named Djokovic, and the losses are concentrated on his awful 2013 and with the adjusting of the new racket in 2014.
Why I decided since 2013? Because it was the year that Djokovic and Murray turned 26 and thus become part of the "OldGen" and the mileage is high. Basically Djokovic stopped Federer a lot in winning title after title.

This loss is aggravating in a similar way to the MC loss against Stan a couple of years ago. Don't begrudge the opponents in the slightest; fan of both. It's just that the elusive titles seemed there for the taking.

At some point I feel like analysis of Federer's career is really going to have to be compartmentalized. Yes, wins out the wazoo this year (food for a doctoral dissertation or 700) but the dynamic is so odd, and very much apart from earlier tennis in his career.

Weren't you the guy with the My Little Pony avatar? Or a unicorn or something? Nice image there but gets lost here. :)

You may have a point, that's why I put in the comments that in 2014, Roger was still adjusting to his new 97 sq in racket. While today at Montreal he was clearly affected with a back injury, don't know if you watched when Federer was serving, he wasn't arching his back by any means in the 2nd set.

Yes, it was from my earlier days here at TT when I had a Pinkie Pie as an avatar. I also had a signature comparing Fedal with Twilight and Pinkie respectively. ;)

No, only saw the first few games. Glad I didn't see it. Sounds like it wasn't much for entertainment. I didn't mean to suggest a parallel between the manner of the losses... just that they were unexpected, and disappointing in the statistical checkbox sense. From what I'm reading, though, I hope that his season is not derailed.

Yeah this loss is really disappointing, in the sense that Fed can't plug-up another hole in his resume, but i guess god works in mysterious ways, some titles you're just not meant to win, like -
Federer 0-4 Rome, 0-4 Monte Carlo, 0-2 Montreal
Nadal 0-5 Miami
Djokovic 0-5 Cincinnati
Murray 0-5 Australian Open

I'm just happy that his body didn't betray him in the Wimbledon final and (if it had to happen) did today in a smaller tournament. It really made me feel even more bad than I already did for Marin Cilic. That feeling of helplessness as just a fan was pretty pronounced, cannot imagine it as an actual athlete/player.

It's not the way you want to see a final play out. And in less than a month, we've been on both ends of it as Federer fans. Neither feels particularly good.

Hopefully those that needlessly bashed Cilic gained some clarity and respect today...not fun being on the other end of it, is it fans? It completely sucks.
