Some Peak Fed Gems

Haven't seen these classic peak Fed masterclass matches in full on youtube with this quality with the American broadcasts especially(sure they aren't the greatest but hearing the McEnroes and the usual suspect with the old Wimbledon theme music always brings back great memories). Besides the 05 Wimby semi I haven't seen any of these matches in full since I originally say them. This youtube user is the man!! Some of Federer's very best. I plan to watch them all in chronological order! Hope for all the other members of the Fed frat you guys enjoy them too and we can reminisce about the glory days. @NatF @TheMaestro1990 @Martin J @tennis_pro @tennisaddict @Gary Duane @FedFosterWallace @nowhereman @Sysyphus @abmk and of course the biggest Fed fan I know @jm1980 :)D) and whoever else I forgot, enjoy!

Great finds! Going to take your suggestion, and try to watch them in sequence.

Just started the first, and they're still talking to Fed, showing clips. Miss that blinding footspeed...

"Do you like doing the media?" "Ummmmm... let's put it this way: if I don't have to do press every day, I would be happy." hahah...

Got through the first set of the first match. 5 W/2 UFE from Hewitt and he takes a breadstick. 14/2 for Federer. I mean wow look at how much venom each return has, just a picture perfect image of all court tennis from Rog. Which is what he was at 04 at his best. The best all court shot making I've ever seen. Mixes in some serve and volley, deft touch at net. So much variety from the baseline. Just wow, good to relive that.

Boris at the end of the set said something like: "Only way to beat him I guess is to hit on his girlfriend or get him drunk, because on court he is unstoppable". Classic.

Think about Becker all gaga in his commentary over the young tennis genius, and over a decade later getting paid to try to solve the grizzled version.

EDIT: haha! <delivered w/ thick German accent> "The roof, the roof, the roof's on fire!"

Finished the first match. 2nd set: Pretty even set till the TB...Hewitt really raised his game at the end of the set, one horrendous FH miss from Fed in the TB and Hewitt starts serving and hitting with real authority. Well deserved.

Third set was just the same as the first...hewitt made some more UFE, but after a shaky first game Fed just uncorked the funhouse.

Fourth set was really interesting. Hewitt played great to get the break and maybe could have won the set had the match not been suspended. Plays a shaky game to give the break back the next day then Federer really raises his level. Saves some BP at 4-4 with huge serving and then hits some sick winners the next game to win the match. Fed caught some breaks from the elements in this tournament for sure although without the rain interrupting his momentum he may have won the match in straights too.

Solid match. Hewitt was outclassed in two of the sets but with Fed playing like that anyone would have been outclassed. But yet he hung in there and when Fed's level dropped he capitalized and hit with some authority and nearly took peak Fed 5. I didn't have a great recollection of this match honestly besides a couple shots so it was great to see again. Have a much better recollection of the other matches on this list.

This was also Fed's 04 in a nutshell. Could reach heights never seen on a tennis court but then could just drop his level and play lackluster. However he'd usually serve his way out of trouble and raise his game right when he needed. His serve was tremendously clutch throughout the year in 04. 05-06 was a lot more consistent in this regard and maybe made his overall level higher but what 04 could do at his best is mind-blowing. 04 is just the best version of Fed to watch imo.

Ah, the good ol days of peak Fed. :) Thanks for sharing man! Some excellent finds, and in great quality too. I'll definitely have to take some time and rewatch these.

watch fast before the youtube piranhas delete them :(
Will do. I checked out the guy's channel, and man, he's got it all! Tons of great Federer matches, most of them in excellent quality. It'd be a real shame if it were all deleted. :(

Finished the first set of the '04 Wimby Quarter. Great stuff from Fed so far; great variety from the baseline, hitting deep, hitting some nice angles, mixing it up with the S&V and net approaches, and serving very well. Really ran Hewitt around and dictated those rallies. Also remembering how good Fed was at handling big serves as well as turning defense into offense. That slice really did wonders for him.

Yeah, I couldn't believe it. I go on YT one day, search up some Beatles songs, and all I find are covers! Unbelievable! Some bastards called UMG UK were blocking all their videos, I was so pissed. I saw they started uploading on their VEVO channel, so I thought, ok maybe they're moving it all there. But no! They've uploaded like 10 videos and it's almost been a year. They need to do something about this already. It's a good thing they're finally on Spotify though. At least I have that left(along with some old vinyls).

Thanks metsman, I actually own that 2004 Wimbledon QF but it's great that it's on Youtube. Hewitt played a really good match but Federer's level in sets 1 and 3 was some of the best grass court tennis I've ever seen. Not seen the 2005 SF with English commentary so I'll give that a look.

Wonderful matches, thanks for sharing! "The roof, the roof, the roof's on fire!" after the magical point that starts at 25:28 in the QF against Hewitt, Wimbledon 2004. Man, Federer basically flew across the court, so freaking smooth.

The way Hewitt was playing in that match reminds me a lot of how Murray plays on grass. And look how Federer demolished Hewitt at his peak!

Also that point to get the break at 1:24:00 was pretty awesome from Federer. He and Hewitt had some great rallies throughout their rivalry and that is one of them.

if that is the point I am thinking of it shows how people stayed away from the peak Fed forehand like the plague. Unless you had a Safin or Nalbandian DTL BH hitting that shot was an extremely high risk proposition. Repeatedly going to the BH burned Hewitt there but Federer timed that BH perfectly and early up the line.

Hewitt hit some really deep forehands with good pace, Federer was just dialled in.

my favorite shot of the whole match is that inside out forehand in the third set. Hewitt hits a good deep BH..standard quality rally ball and Federer just exquisite footwork and how he generates that angle to get it past Hewitt nobody knows. On the replay it actually looks like he is floating on top of the court as he runs around it lol. One of the most aesthetically pleasing shots I have ever seen.

Also yeah that point shows how good Fed was at handling depth on groundstrokes..he'd just half volley it back deep with the wrist and racquet head speed and the point would be reset. These days when Novak hits his deep balls Fed looks helpless. All about footwork and preparation.

Perhaps with these odds this thread should be titled Federer taking candy from babies.:
26/2004 QF Wimbledon Grass Roger Federer Lleyton Hewitt 6-1 6-7(1) 6-0 6-4 1.22 - 4.90
25/2005 SF Wimbledon Grass Roger Federer Lleyton Hewitt 6-3 6-4 7-6(1) 1.16 - 6.58
26/2006 QF Wimbledon Grass Roger Federer Mario Ancic 6-4 6-4 6-4 1.04 - 10.00
45/2006 F Tennis Masters Cup Hard Roger Federer James Blake 6-0 6-3 6-4 1.08 - 11.00

Watched a good bit of all these matches and this just does not look like the greatest tennis. Federer was hardly pushed in these matches. As a non-devotee at the time, these matches were not on the must watch list as the results were almost a foregone conclusion. I guess these are gems for their rarity and I thank the OP, especially for Ancic. I see these very much from the prism of Federer's last few years (whereas Fed diehards remember his prime years the best). I really like his new attacking style and in these matches Federer is able to stay back and dominate against some relatively low ball hitters.

The guy is literally doing everything but walking on water and is hitting ridiculous shots left and right in some of these matches but it doesn't impress you?

Stick to watching the "recent classics" then. 14-15 Wimby final! 15 USO final! 115 TMC final! 6 AO semi! 16 Wimby semi! The real must-watch matches aka Real Peak Fedr who is screwed when he doesn't serve well or someone gets consistent depth on their groundies.
He doesn't play more attacking tennis now, in 2014 maybe, but in 2015 he went back to primarily playing from the baseline with a diminished baseline game and that passivity has cost him big time against Novak. In these matches he can attack from the baseline at a level and toy with his opponents with the slice that is unfathomable today because his forehand and slice are garbage today. So tell me how is what he has done since 2015 an attacking style compared to this? Just a ludicrous statement. There are also a solid amount of net approaches in the 04 Wimby QF. But you see what you want I guess.

I'm sorry this type of comment just grinds my gears. Maybe you can post some of his recent "must watch" matches with his so called "new attacking style" against the "high ball hitters" and we can see if all of them combined produces as much shot making as he produced in a span of a few games in some of these matches.

Nice to look at it through a different lens, but to take this wizardry for granted is a little misguided, eh? Everyone's seen all of the clashes against the household names, and knows them like the backs of their hands. It's great to see the most lethal version of Fed on display here.

My favorite matches are the Hewitt 2004 Wimb QF and the Blake TMC 2006 final.

The opponents were playng very well both times, Fed was just unplayable.
I would gladly recommend this match.

Yeah why watch Fed pull insane winners out of his ass when you can watch Djokoray on an endless loop and Raonic and Thiem wetting their pants when they get to the big stages.
LOL. I figured that might catch the ire of you guys. Thiem is a developing player as is Pouille. I'm guardely optimistic that they will do something on the high bouncing North American hard courts. They've not done anything in previous years so my hopes are for really only some nice match wins and improved play. Next year will be the first year that both may make a big dent on that surface. Of courses you guys are a bit sensitive given Thiemerer's recent results with Fed.:D Hopefully Fed will get his game up another notch and exact some revenge, but looking forward to their next match and I hope its on the hard courts soon.:p Hope to see you all there. I'd like to see Thiem play matches with players in the top 10 other than Nadal, Fed, and Djoko. Murray and Wawa please.

More Fed gems please.:D Any of the early Djokovic vs Federer US Open matches stand out? Its amazing to me how Federer had so much trouble with Murray early on and now the tables have been turned:

Federer hit like two aces and some huge winners to sniff out like 3-4 blake BP's in the 1-1 game in the 2nd set. The BH baseline half volley on 1 of the BP was insane. Nothing Blake can do.

And yes Fed's level in the SF and F of the 04 TMC was ridiculous. Hewitt and Safin didn't play particularly poorly, Fed was just GOATing in all aspects.
But both those matches have been on youtube for a while, aren't as rare as these.

So you deny that the racket change and Edberg coaching changed Federer's game? I see very little discussion of this in general pro section, but I stay away and prefer the pro match results section. Anyone have links on such a discussion?

Most of the change was in 2014. In 2015 besides Cincy he went back to baselining ball bashing for the most part except he couldn't do it anywhere near as effectively as before. Partly has something to do with these joke courts, doesn't feel comfortable attacking but that is what he had to do some more of to beat Djokovic in some of those finals.

Fedberg and the racquet changed Fed's game, just not for the better compared to what he could do even in 2012, and saying he attacks more compared to his best years when his FH and slice have fallen off a cliff is just disingenuous. And like I said most of that change was in 2014 but his baseline game and approaches were pretty bad most of the year. And it was nice to see but he didn't maintain it as his baseline game got a little better in 2015 which was sad to see. And at the end of the day his game revolves around his serve 95% of the time. When he doesn't serve well a lot of people can outmaneuver him from the baseline.

The change is easily acknowledged but you don't hear people bring it up because of the inevitable bs comparisons non-Fed fans make to his peak years when the two simply cannot be compared. The changes in racquet and the brief net rushing is mostly to compensate for that, but the biggest help of all is probably the competition. He still looks like a child today compared to how he used to play. The difference between 2012 and today is stark, not to even bring up earlier years.

47/2010 RR A ATP World Tour Finals Hard Roger Federer Andy Murray 6-4 6-2 1.80 - 2.16
41/2010 F Shanghai Masters Hard Andy Murray Roger Federer 6-3 6-2 2.94 - 1.46
32/2010 F Canadian Masters Hard Andy Murray Roger Federer 7-5 7-5 2.07 - 1.86
3/2010 F Australian Open Hard Roger Federer Andy Murray 6-3 6-4 7-6(11) 1.60 - 2.30
48/2009 RR B ATP World Tour Finals Hard Roger Federer Andy Murray 3-6 6-3 6-1 1.80 - 2.00
34/2009 SF Cincinnati Masters Hard Roger Federer Andy Murray 6-2 7-6(8) 1.90 - 1.90
11/2009 SF Indian Wells Masters Hard Andy Murray Roger Federer 6-3 4-6 6-1 2.25 - 1.74
2/2009 SF Doha Hard Andy Murray Roger Federer 6-7(6) 6-2 6-2 2.05 - 1.87
45/2008 RR B Tennis Masters Cup Hard Andy Murray Roger Federer 4-6 7-6(3) 7-5 2.20 - 1.65
42/2008 SF Madrid Masters Hard Andy Murray Roger Federer 3-6 6-3 7-5 3.55 - 1.36
35/2008 F US Open Hard Roger Federer Andy Murray 6-2 7-5 6-2 1.54 - 2.75
10/2008 R32 Dubai Hard Andy Murray Roger Federer 6-7(6) 6-3 6-4 4.20 - 1.20
33/2006 R32 Cincinnati Masters Hard Andy Murray Roger Federer 7-5 6-4 12.00 - 1.03

Those became some close odds. Murray perplexes me greatly, but perhaps someone can enlighten on this rivalry.

I was just teasing you a bit, I like Thiem and hope he continues to progress - I root for all the young guns.

As far as Murray goes he got Federer a bunch of times during a period where Federer's consistency in non slam events was waning. Federer dropped a lot more matches in masters and smaller tournaments during 07-10 than in the years previously (04-06), Murray being one of the best players in that period got him several times. In the big matches where Federer brought his A game he was the daddy. It's mostly due to Federer losing that consistency he had in his game during his best years, Hewitt used to own less consistent Fed too.

Thanks, for educating the *********s on this forum.

Federer was amazing back then. My favorite is the SF against Roddick in 2003 Wimbledon. 2nd is the SF against Bjorkman in 2006.
