Some Peak Fed Gems

Federer at the '06 AO wasn't just off in play, but also body language... he seemed tentative, had a constant deer-in-the-headlights look going on, and played unusually conservative.

It's a shame under these circumstances, Davydenko couldn't take him out.
Fed was still at his peak, remember that. Likewise, his confidence was also at peak level. Even in a very sub par state he was very difficult to beat. Certainly more difficult that 2014-2015 Fed in a sub par state.

Davydenko messed up a bit, but beating that Fed was never going to be easy regardless of his form.

Davydenko messed up the third set but besides that Fed was mostly too good in the first and 4th

Fed was on in the first, but his play dropped after that.

Courier himself said:
"I think thats what would make me uneasy if I was Tony Roche right now is, my man doesn't know exactly what he's doing out here against his opponent, he doesn't have a set game plan, he's fishing. Federer is just fishing for the solution right now"

"Where are those forehand to forehand rallies that we saw in the first set where Federer was getting the business done? Going cross court cross court, and then smack, down the line a winner, and we're here in the booth going 'wow, thats a great shot', can't remember one now, it's been a while"

Another great upload by this guy. I believe this match was posted in full at the start of this thread but was taken down.

The quality of play Fed could produce in 04 was boggling all court stuff. First and third sets in this match was ridiculous. Sometimes his level dropped but Hewitt played a great 2nd and 4th sets in this match.

Not really a hidden gem but masters cup 2006 against Rafa. Rafa played sooooo good that day, IMO his best indoors match outside of his peak or atleast top 5. Rog still beat him in 2 sets, that Federer was scary good.
You thought Rafa played really good? I didn't think so IIRC. Pretty average by his standards, and was constantly rushed by Fed, especially in that 1st set.

But I've seen other people talk up Rafa's level in this match, so now I'm 2nd guessing myself. I might watch it again sometime later. My notes agree with me though,so maybe it's just a different opinion....

Shame there isn't a full match in English of the 2003 Wimbledon Final on YouTube. What a brilliant display that was, plus the SF match against Roddick. He was quite convincing the whole tournament really. He didn't have to be his best against Koubek, but other than that.... Though I haven't seen the Schalken match, but heard it was a high quality match from Fed. Anyone willing to upload it if they have it?

He was error prone, but it was the right approach in that match imo.

Given that he played on a pretty fast, low bouncing surface (definitely faster than the O2 arena in 2013-2016), I'd say that Nadal played pretty well. Both sets were close and in order to win, Fed broke at the business end of both sets.

Also have to remember at AO06 he was still nursing that bad ankle and was wearing the brace like he was at WTF 2005.

Another rare one here. I consider this tournament and the late 04/early 05 period maybe his best ever period of play. But he was on a different planet in this tournament in particular.

Thanks for sharing, Federer was ridiculous this tournament. Everything was clicking including his backhand. Hewitt was in really good form himself, but even strong deep shots are getting eaten up by Federer.

'07 Hamburg final in HD (another one from Mr. Yoeri Nieuwland). Good stuff from Freddie in those last two sets.

A lot of the tennis tv classic matches, are being turned into torrents, so you'll probably get some great high quality matches on YouTube soon enough. Whether that's a good or bad thing though...

Great this match is available in decent quality. Hopefully the full HD CBS version will be available in the future much as the 05 final is

This is offensive baselining at its absolute peak by Fed

Not peak fedr, but a great performance nonetheless. Some great quality highlights of fedr's first Masters triumph. One of his finest matches on clay. Hopefully someone will get the full match.

Brilliant play. You'd think 2004 Fed had got his hands on a Delorian the way he was playing.

Not all of those are peak Fed gems, especially that Johansson match but I am loving all the new extended highlights. Much prefer 30 minute highlights to 12 minute ones.
