Some recent match play

@Shroud and all,

One thing I have going for me is I'm willing to sit and watch a lot of instructional videos on youtube. Different teachers or coaches have different views and many clicks with me.

I dunno. Just watch, take notes, and then play, observe. I have had a lot of setbacks but also alot of eureka moments.

Today (interesting I'm still discovering, learning new things) I picked up how to intercept the ball. Suddenly I felt much faster and easier on playing. I'm in control against my usual opponents again.

So here is a vid of some wall work trying to groove the fh.

Try earlier preparation, it’s very interesting experience hitting the wall: you have very little time for it, but if you still manage to fit it in, it feels great. Compact takeback, but complete by bounce. And really rushing the body coil with it, of course, it’s actually the most intense part of all the sequence hitting at the wall: getting coiled and set. The swing itself should be much more fluid.

yikes. How do you do that? I can't get my head around "earlier"

First pic is your position as the ball bounces. Well, that’s a shortish bounce off the wall, I know, but you get the idea — you barely started coiling.

Second picture is where you want to be as the ball bounces (given you continue using this shape of backswing). From there you only go down and forward. It’s more or less first Yandell checkpoint, as far as I get it.

The problem on the wall is you have like 1/4 of the time to do this compared to on-court hitting… but if you don’t try hard for this timing, you carry this habit on court and waste time between shots standing face-on waiting for the ball.

To share my own experience as Summer Wall Dweller (SWD), I vary between the following:
- rush the prep as much as I can, with fast recovery and shortish coil;
- play 2-bounce balls from farther back, hitting overall higher at the wall.

That stuff enhances proper rhythm and timing for me, keeping me safe from “wall rhythm” which might cause issues when transferring to matchplay.

Late contact @ballmachineguy mentioned seemed related to this timing issue.

How do you react and take the racket back for a volley, Shroud? Do the same on groundstrokes. I’m serious!

With SW grip, racket drop/flip happens mostly by supination/ESR (very obvious here on Shroud fh, also others like Djokovic, Sinner etc). On Eastern grip forehands like Fed’s it’s the wrist bending back (extension). Just an observation.

tennis twist!

A few questions for you:
Did it need to be assembled it or did it come assembled?
Can you measure the dimensions of it? e.g. L x W x H.
How do you like it overall? Durable? Adjustable?
According to their website it uses D batteries. Do you use rechargeable D batteries?

Yikes.

1. Not sure but it might have needed some assembly. IIRC the top and bottom were split and just needed to be pushed together. It was nothing tough for sure.

2. 10" Wide x 11" Deep x 22" Height

3. Love it because its super easy to transport, no need for multiple trips to the car or the house to charge, and most importantly I USE it. Bet lots of higher end machines are collecting dust...I don't recall seeing a ball machine at the courts in years. Except mine. Totally durable. Not all that adjustable. It has 4 height settings which I set on the highest and never mess will. Feed rate is constant and will slowly decrease as the battery wears out.

4. you can get an AC model or battery. I got the battery model and was using rechargeable batteries. Though as you know my life was turned upside down and just this week I got to the courts and the batteries had died. I had 3 rechargeable in my bag but it needs 6 so bought 6 normal ones (no idea where the charger is). Though it says the batteries last for 10 hours. Thats a ton of months or even years for the batteries to go.

Your wish is my command.

Had an MRI on my brain Thursday. People try and relieve my anxiety by saying “I’m sure they’ll find nothing.”

At least I think they’re trying to help.
Wow man. Going in for my quarterly MRI on Tuesday. So far so good.

But hang in there! No one had a clue I had a brain issue (no Sureshs being weird is not an indicator) and I ended up in the hospital and was rushed to surgery. You are way ahead of where I was...the sooner they catch things the better. FWIW I knew something was off but no one ever thought it was a brain issue. So be glad you are getting things looked at before it takes its toll if there is anything there anyhow.

And was that a outlier chicken wing, or is that like all of them.

Best of luck man!

Thanks Shroud!

It was an outlier. Your arm is doing everything correctly. I think your upper body is holding it back just a bit. Imagine that the speed of your right shoulder is what will power your fh. BTW, I like the open stance shots better.

Good luck on Tuesday!

Thanks. I was hoping it was an outlier. Played today and split some games of 21. I was happy with my play and the fh rocked. Hitting with the ball machine really helped. Was back to hitting some winners and forcing some errors.

Man now you gave me something to think about on the shoulder. Why can't the fh make sense like the bh does? Is it a shoulder only movement? Or a torso movement lead by the shoulder?

It is not a shoulder only movement. That would be difficult. The rest of your upper body will move when you focus on hitting/driving through the ball with the shoulder. The shoulder is the part of your upper body carrying the arm to contact. What, do you want your abs or obliques to be the focus?

yikes. Who knew you could FOCUS while hitting. UGH tennis is hard, but thanks I will add that to the list and see what happens.

I had several MRIs when I was in the hospital and rehab but man its so much easier when you are medicated. I am an audiophile when not overthinking forehands and man the SOUND in that MRI is like torture! Plus being in a vice like setup is not fun. Maybe thats a good time to ponder the shoulder.

Audiophiles still exist? What’s wrong with listening to Pink Floyd through a 2” midrange speaker in an Alexa?

The MRI tube sounds like someone without any imagination at all is trying to make their own trance music.

As for the shoulder, how else are you going to be sure it gets out front where it is supposed to be?

Yep there are a few of us still left on the audiophile bus. 2" Alexa speaker? Everything is wrong with that. Its like the sonic equivalent of a chicken wing fh. You don't let your friends do that. Tennis is quite cheap compared to audiophilia. :(

That was funny about the MRI music. I always get the 70s soundtrack with the horse in the desert that no one bothered to name.

On the shoulder, I think that is taken care of by Yandell's check point where the hand is in front of the face and the arm is almost fully extended.

I’m so much impressed by the perfectly smooth WTA loop of your fh that I’m going to develop a smaller version of that. Why bother with the twists and turns and jerkiness of the ATP fh!

and the circle/loop continues, no pun intended.

The smooth loop is really nice but I think I still prefer a smaller version like this one.

Or this one.

I don’t agree with JY. A fh can’t be constructed of checkpoints.

Again, chain over chain points.

Do you rather watch a running movie or still pictures of movie scenes?
