Something fishy is going on

As you might of read, both semi finalists Berdych and Nishikori have retired causing the final that im guessing alot of people put money on. I dont buy for a second that this legitimate, an hour before the matches no less. Im in no position to prove anything but something about this is extremely suspicious to me, 2 years ago a simular thing happened to Murray. How can one tournement have so many withdraws?

Im starting to think there is someone behind the scenes controlling it and paying off players, i know this is only my opinion but Nishikori looked completely fine at the end against Federer and despite his history with pulling out with injurys, i dont buy for a second he is suddenly unable to play. As for Berdych, gastroenteritis? thats a legitimate thing to keep you out of a match but that is usually caused by ill-prepared food, i find it highly unlikely that would happen accidently. Pros would take much more care with the food they consume to prevent things like this happening.

I hope this is investigated more but i doubt it will be. Im in the view that this is not legitimate and someone paid the players off to get the "dream" final.

I really hope this isn't true, but alas this is professional sports. It is really suspicious though as both of them looked fine throughout this tournament, and their last matches as well. No sign of any injury what so ever.

They didn't have to pay a cent to get the dream final. Very unlikely Nishi would have beaten Djoko and even more unlikely Berd would have beaten Nadal. Doesn't mean the spectators shouldn't have got TENNIS. We're the losers in this whole affair.

Nishkori pulled his groin playing Fed which is very believable. Berd man probably is just trying to avoid the 17th straight loss.

This look suspicious and notice Berdych and Nishikori have a Davis Cup tie next week. I think both guys rationalized by getting out now they have a few days more rest before the Davis Cup quarterfinal tie. The ATP is messed up the players need more time between events and Davis Cup.
Iv changed my mind about the reason for the retirements. Guess what 2 countrys play each other next week? Yup, Japan vs Czech Republic.

Altho now i read about it, aparently Berdych isnt included in the squad? Ok im confused, if Berdych suddenly decides to play in the tie then we have the reason. If he doesnt them im back to my original theory xD

Well that doesn't really make sense as let's face it that 17th straight loss for Berdych is gonna come sooner or later. He can run but he can't hide!

Agree with the Nishikori part. Man, our sport is becoming less and less transparent. I don't like conspiracies, but all of this was really last minute.

If you really want to put things into perspective. These two fools messed up a lot of stuff.

I'm assuming most people wanted to see a Fed-Djoker semi along with a Rafa-Dolgo semi. So, you take that away from us and now you both decide not to play the semi in which you already ruined for most.

NOPE.....Djokodal will recharge their batteries for an epic clash. Nadal must have been tired from the Milosh match and maybe wasn't playing great( gives him time to sort things out).

Djokovic hasn't been stellar either....IW was poor even though he won.

I hope this does help them to play real well.....it been a while since they played at IW/Miami.

Both have got something to prove.

I completely agree ! This final would have happened anyway, at this stage of the tournament.

Rafa has the most to prove because he has not won Miami yet.

Both your conclusions as well as your analysis reek of extreme conspiracy paranoia.

Please seek the intensive help of a professional therapist immediately. Stay away from sharp objects and 9/11 truther conventions. They will be dangerous to your health.

Yes, because we all know that rich corporations/people never have two or more people engaged in illegal practices to make more money. Nope. No such thing as conspiracies!

Bad day for tennis. I saw the live score app said both Nadal and Djokovic won via retirements/walkovers. And I thought surely that couldn't be. Everybody loses in these types of situations.

Walkovers are commonplace. But, I've never seen a double walkover in the semis. That must REALLY be bad for the fans who came out today. They should have a half-way decent exo ready to go in such situations.

I know what you mean as I feel exactly the same. I don't want to say any more as I could be way off the mark but "fishy" would definitely be the word I'd use to describe it.

It just seems too convenient. Give Birdman a bowl problem so he will be out but not really out for long. Just for this. I am really wondering. Its almost to obvious. But on the other hand I dont think they really care about what we think.

Agreed. Gastro is just the most convenient and lame excuse when you want or have to skip sthg...plus somebody else at least woulda got it as well in the tournament and we would have heard about this going on...

The thing that people don't realize is that these guys are on strict diets and eat the same thing for every meal, every day, when playing a tournament. They leave nothing to chance.

It's not like Berdych was out partying the night before the semifinal, boozing it up or something. Gastro problems don't just crop up out of nowhere. "Fishy" is the right choice of words.

Berdych gave a great effort against Nadal at WTF, taking a set 6-1 and being competitive all the way through. None of their matches are cakewalks with the exception of the Rome semifinal last year.

The only fishy thing is Berdych being Nadal's pigeon and giving up on the match without even trying. I am sure if someone else was his opponent in the SF he would be playing.

Case in point... if you're injured and you don't plan or think you're going to play the next round, why the f* do you fight to win the current match? In a way, you're screwing it up for everyone. It may not matter much in lower tournaments and certainly doesn't matter in league or anything amateur, but at this level with the top guys possibly ending up together again in a final, play on or if you injure yourself, bow the f* out BEFORE it's too late. And people wonder why I boycott the finals with Nad and Djok. What a joke of a setup! If I had a Twitter account, I'd flame the s* out of Bird right now.

So If someone has a problem he has to lose on purpose?! What about prize money, what about glory, this people life depends on tennis and you making this kind of statements. Its obviously **** that the SF ended up like that but this kind of thing happen only once for the last 40 years or so. Plain crashes more often than that and I can still seem them flying into the sky

Nishikori beat and bagelled 2011 Djokovic, so it is possible he was paid off to withdraw from Miami to help Djokovic into the final. Whereas Nadal-Berdych is one of the most lopsided head2heads of the last 7 years, so I think Berdych really got food poisoning or just withdrew because he saw Nishikori withdraw and thought he'd blend in and avoid the record streak.

^I'm serious, there is nothing to indicate Djokovic was a certain winner over Nishikori. There was a clear risk that Nishikori would win. Whereas Berdych is on a 16 match losing streak, so not a risk for Nadal.

Back in the mid-2000's, Andy Roddick got sick from dinner at Taco Bell I think. He still played the next day but was hurt by it and lost his match.

Berdych did say he's not playing Davis Cup... If he had turned around and kicked a** for Czech Republic I would be inclined to be more skeptical. Call me naive, but groin pulls and stomach bugs do happen at all levels of play.

Mid-2000's was such a long time ago. Tennis has evolved alot in the last 10 years. In the last 2-3 years there has been such a focus on eating healthy and regulating diets and intake. Ok i admit, maybe some tennis plays slip and indulge with fast food but this is Berdych we're talking about, a regular top 10 player who is about to play the best player in the world in the next round. Do you really think he was sat thinking... "hm i fancy a burger and a soda"?

I get that sometimes you can wake up and just feel bad but i cant even remember any other time that Berdych has pulled out or even made excuses for his fitness. Up untill this happened i thought he was one of the fittest players on the tour and his excuse was just a little too easily dismissed. A belivable yet hard to prove illness that will go away in 1-2 days.

The Berdych withdraw looks a bit strange because I saw him at the press conference announcing his withdrawal and he looked fine.
