The 2007 Orange Prokom Open kicks off with the qualies today and tomorrow, and the first round on Monday.

Davydenko and Robredo have both had a string of bad first-round losses recently. Chela will have a rough first-round matchup in Roitman, who knocked him out this week in Austria. You have to wonder about Janko Tipsarevic, who has looked awful since his Wimbledon run.

Why is it that I just found out last year(when it was too late) that there is a tennis tournament in Poland, close to where I reside? And now I'm not on vacation over there:-(

I'm not surprised we've never had that great of a tennis history.

You're Polish I take it. Well you'll know that tennis is a very tough sport to take up over there. Not because of the resources necessarily but the money. Most people just don't have the money to go buying tennis equipment and then become members of their local clubs. When I was there with my tennis bag people asked me if I was playing their tournament, I laughed because I couldn't believe they asked me that. But what we take for granted here in America is a big deal in some countries. Tennis is a sport that can be taken up by alot of people here, but over there you'd have to come from a well to do family. Sopot is a nice area of Poland too, by the sea over in the north. A resort area.

I'd say probably 3/4 of the players in the qualifying draw were Polish, and not a single Pole won the necessary two matches.

It's too bad that hasn't changed at all over the years. Peter Luczak is Polish but plays and lives in Australia. I believe he was born in Warsaw, but his parents emigrated to Australia while he was still a little boy. As for the Radwanska sisters, I see no potential there. I saw them hitting at the US Open outside courts and I didn't see anything that could convince me of greatness. I almost forgot about Domachowska. Dunno what happened to her. I thought she was cute. But really, I'm surprised that countries like Czech Rep., Slovakia and Russia produce more tennis talent than Poland. Even though economically speaking they are somewhat similar. Someone will have to fill me in on this.

what's up tennis08tarheels, long time no talk. How are things going over at DavidsonCats?

my predictions for this tournament are already killing me. Worst of all is Almagro already out -- I had him in the semi-finals. I don't understand how he loses to Zabaleta. Unreal.

also did anyone else notice that Gaston Gaudio had to qualify for this tournament...and was NOT successful. He got absolutely destroyed by Steve Darcis. And just 2 years ago he won the FRENCH OPEN...

This is often a week of surprises. Some top players collect their appearance fees and doesn't bother if they loose here. Their concentration is moving towards North American hard court season. Players towards end of top 100 needs extra points and are much more hungry. Betting this event without insider information is a difficult task.

Ah, Rick. I forgot you were an avid tennis fan, as well. To be honest, I really don't like the predictions. Acasuso is a strong clay court player who destroyed Vasselin and should have beaten Ferrer in Umag, and you picked him to lose in the first round to an inferior opponent. You have Chela winning Sopot, and his first-round opponent is a guy that handled him pretty well in Austria last week. Since his disappointing showing at the French, Chela has been simply bad. I don't think Tipsarevic will win a match, he's been absolutely horrible since Wimbledon. The Washington picks are better in my opinion, but I find it hard to believe that del Potro will cause that much damage on hard courts.

yeah, well i saw Del Potro play in Miami in March and witnessed him destroy Baghdatis, so that could be blinding me from the truth - i would have taken Haas out of that section but he hasn't even stepped on a court since Wimbledon and my brother said he looked awful while practicing with Safin on Sunday...who knows though?

I used to like Acasuso but he hasn't done much for me lately. But yeah, so far my 1st round predictions have been awful, but I'm sticking with my man Chela - if not only because Davydenko has been awful of late and Robredo hasn't done anything special.

I'm going with Andreev again, hopefully he won't let me down against Robredo again.

Roitman destroyed Chela 61 62.

Calleri was outplaying Koubek 60 51 but he choked and lost the 2nd set in the tie-break. 3rd set about to start.

And in the 3rd set Calleri was leading 5-2, wasted 2 matchpoints on serve and lost 5-7. This is the biggest choke I have seen in ages, I´m really disappointed on Calleri.

that is reaaaaaally strange. calleri isnt a "chokable" player.
Im very sad right now. :(

wow, that's crazy, just like this whole tournament. What an awful loss for Chela. Yeah I'm going with Igor now. I saw Querrey absolutely DESTROY him in Miami, but the guy is just nasty on clay.

Calleri's performance is simply hideous, and I can barely believe it. Gordo! Gimme a break!

I was kinda expecting Chela's result, though

I'll go with Andreev all the way.

the Massu-Darcis match looks like a good one, Massu took the first 7-6 (10-8) and its 5-5 in the 2nd

and Vliegen is up a break on Horna in the 3rd
