this thought just ran through my mind and i didnt want to hesitate before posting it....so first of all, if the 2012 olympics are not in london, delete this thread

i'm pretty sure the 2012 olympics are in london though, so would that mean tennis would be played at wimbledon?

if so, could you see federer ending his career by winning the gold medal at the 2012 olympics in london, at wimbledon?

he would be 31 or 32, depending on when the games happen

i think it would be a perfect ending....if he has already broken sampras' record of 14 slams, why not end it with an olympic gold medal?

It would indeed be a great end to his career to win an Olympic gold medal. However I think he has a better chance of doing it in 2008 when he is still near his peak. By 2012 he will be routinely owned by players 5 - 10 years younger than him. Just like Sampras was in 2002:

Sampras did win USO that year of course. But he had a very crappy 2002 before then.

I agree with 8PAQ here, and will be rooting for Fed in 2008, but 2012 is so far off, and perhaps he will retire well before then? It's something to think about anyway. :)

well i know very well he can win the 2008 games in beijing.....2012 seems far off but federer will be 31/32 in that year, depending on if the london games are held before or after his birthday in august

i see it as a perfect ending if tennis is played at wimbledon at those olympic games, and nothing would be better than for federer to end his career with a gold medal

31/32 is about the age i think federer will retire at, and i dont see him retiring before that age

I agree - it would be a wonderful way to end an amazing career and hope he stays on that long. I just have visions of Agassi at the USO flashing through my mind.

I am sure he will give it a try in 2012, especially if he doesn't win gold in 2008. I wouldn't bet on him winning gold in 2012. Even thou it will be on grass you have remember that in 2001 and 2002 Sampras won 0 titles until his 2002 USO.

true stuff 8paq, but maybe federer's (sampras 2002 us open) is the 2012 olympic games...

i mean if both players have so many drastic similarities, why not put the ending of their career's 10 yrs apart and end it with a bang?

so federer defeats who in that speculated 2012 olympic games final speculated to be played at wimbledon? nadal? roddick? someone else?

The new GOAT, Bernard Tomic who will be couple months short of his 20th birthday. :D

I actually remember an interview with Federer where he said that he was so excited when he first heard that the Olympics were to be held in London, that he immediately called his Mum, saying that it would be a dream to win gold on the courts of Wimbledon.

I remember him saying that. If he did win the gold, this would be the cumlination of his career on ATP. Then he could go on the senior's tour and win more titles, make more money, and break more `records. etc etc etc etc ....until he's an OAP.

OAP = Old Aged Pensioner.

I think the Olympics in London would be a fantastic way to finish his career. If he achieves even half of what we expect of him by 2012 then he would be the GOAT and have virtually ever record under the sun.

An Olympic gold medal at the home of his first slam triumph would just complete the fairytale.

I don't know of any players that have retired at that time of year unless they were forced to by injury. If he's still playing then then he'll retire after the US Open.

He's said, on more than one occasion, that he'll most likely retire after the 2012 Olympics. I think he'll have accomplished everything he wants to by then (or if he hasn't, he never will). It's also a good finish for him - the courts of Wimbledon, right where it really started.

yeah, right where it all started....because sampras ended his career from where it all started as well

and federer doesnt exactly have a "home" slam...wimbledon is close, but no slam in his home country...an olympic gold medal would be icing on the cake :)

Even if Fed isnt at his best to forget that the best rarely win the Olympics for various reasons and opinions. If he isnt still at the top in 2012 which he probably wont be, if his priority is to win Olympic gold then it is very possible.

Nah, I reckon if Fed retires in 2012, he'll at least do it after the US Open. You may as well play in all the slams on your retirement year.

Incidently, what's going to happen to the Wimbledon courts that year? With the Olympics being held in July, and 'The Championships' only recently been played, there probably won't be any grass left.

In 6 years, there's no way he'll be as good as he is now. Then again, with him you never know. He is, after all, the greatest.

can any one say "golden slam"
no really it would be a great thing if he could still be playing well that far down the road. but i think that if he wins the grand slam next year he will walk into the sunset with mirka and forget about tennis. or he will keep playing and win wimby, and the gold that year. i mean there is no reason with fed's style of game why he couldnt be winning when he is older on grass and fast hard courts.

You might be right but what age was Agassi his best until? Possably until he turned 33 early in 2003 was the last time he was still arguably at his best as a player since that the end of a stretch he won 5 slams and so many Masters titles. Granted it was incredable what Agassi did to be at such a high level so old, so not that I would assume another great player is going to do that for sure, but still worth noting. Sampras was still at his best in 1999 as a 28 year old, but had he not accomplished his final goals of records all from the end of 1998 through middle of 2000 when he won Wimbledon how much longer might he have been at his best had he had those targets to still drive him. After all as a 31 year old he was able to do what he did at the U.S Open, and for the full second week of the U.S Open looked like vintage Sampras to me, also add to that the full second week of the previous years U.S Open as a 30 year old except for being too tired in the final.

So we will see since Federer will only be 31 in 2012.

I dont think Fed is the type to retire like that, just because young stars are coming up. I see him portraying more of a life-long Agassi Career.
