Speed Pro 2022 reviews

Hey guys -- so I traded for a used (but in excellent condition) 2022 Speed Pro recently and just started hitting with it. I demoed this stick last year and loved it; it had a nice beefy thud, good plow, great control, just a great all-around stick. But it felt a little too heavy to me at the time (I was coming from a very light 285g Pure Strike Team) and too low of a launch. So I chose to main a Blade 98 for six months or so, then moved on to a Pure Strike VS. I never measured the specs of the Speed Pro I demoed, but TW lists it at 310g unstrung static, and 329 SW strung.

When I got this new one a couple weeks ago, I noticed during my first hit that the weight I thought was cumbersome was gone. I figured it was because I had, over the past year, become accustomed to heavier rackets having graduated to the Blade and then the PSVS (which was also leaded-up to about 335g static). So I shrugged it off. But then I actually got it measured by my stringer:

326g strung
319 SW with Lynx Tour 1.25
317 SW with Silver 7 Tour 17 gauge

Those are crazy low swing weights, right? Has anyone encountered a SP this under spec before? The whole point of this stick is you can play it stock, but now I'm afraid I have to lead it up to beef up the SW to what I remember liking about it. I want it to hit a heavier ball than it does.
Hate to say it, but that’s par for the course. With 16 gauge (which I think is how TW measures) you’re going to be in the low 320s. Maybe 322 with the Lynx Tour 16 which is what I think TW self branded string actually is.

So you’re about 10 points light. Maybe 12. Thats pretty normal. Yonex is usually the tightest out of all major manufacturers but even that has become par for the course with them. I guess you’d rather be low than heavy.

I bought mine 2 years ago and the strung SW was 323 (strung with Lynx Tour and Hawk Touch). It needed some lead at 12, 3, and 9 .

Did exactly that and added 2g at 3&9! It was super solid after that.

My only problem with adding that much lead in the hoop is changing the balance. 6.5 points HL right now - adding 6-8g of hoop weight will mean I’d need that much in the handle to keep it somewhat whippy.

Yes, you're right... I put a leather grip on to counterbalance that weight and ended up with 345 g (static) and 32 cm balance.

That’s very close to the Swingweights that I had. I put lead on there to get it to 325. I had the prior version in black and those were 333, which was a bit on the high side for me. Head’s QC for SW is quite bad.

Definitely low. Mine swings close to 330

What do you recommend for lead in the hoop to beef it up? I’m tempted to put 4g at 12 as I mentioned before, but the TW customization tool says to put 4g total split between 10 and 2. Pros and cons?
Lots of pros add lead at 12 to help the racquet to keep going through after contact. Start with 4 g and you can gradually go lower / cut the lead, if the added weight influences the maneuverability too much for your taste.

I think it depends how polarized you want the racket to feel. Obviously putting it at 12 will feel more polarized and give you more power (12 would be my preferred location). 10 & 2 will move the sweet spot up a bit and be less polarized. I also find 10 & 2 to be my least favorite lead placement location.

Personally, I’d try 12 first and move to 10/2 if you find it too powerful/sluggish

Yes. 3 & 9 is great for improving the twist stability, which is crucial if you volley often in the match.

I took your advice and put 4g at 12. But some shadow swinging in the living room felt incredibly head-heavy; I could definitely tell the balance was off. (It was already 6-6.5 pts head light before I added anything, and I don't like anything heavier than 5 pts). So I immediately took 2g off and left 2 on, and now it swings better. Excited to take it onto the court this way. If I still feel like it needs more SW I'll put the other 2g back on.

Of course, and I have lead at 3&9 in my Extreme Tour for that very reason. But the Speed is already stable and has a heftier twistweight than the ET.

Some of the reviews mention that Speed Pro is better for 2HBH than OHBH. Would you agree with that? As a OHBH players, what is your review specifically regarding the OHBH?

I find no problem on the one hander. But mine is 322SW strung. Slices as you would expect are great.

Any update? Did you end up keeping the 2g or move the weight around a bit?

I kept the 2g and I like it a lot. The racket is a little more solid on plow through, it isn’t too head heavy, so I can move it around at the net, and it has a perfect power level.

I’m also loving Tourna S7T in it, full bed at 46. Fantastic string for the SP.

Head Speed Pro 2022 will probably go into annals as one of the most complete and best playing racquets of all times for an all court player — upper intermediate to advanced. You have to have a swing mechanics on all strokes to truly appreciate it.

I’ve been playing with it ever since and for me nothing else can come close to it.

I’ve been also playing with EZONE 98 2022 too, which is much better racquet on serves, but in any other respect Speed is just an ideal, perfect racquet. Comfortable, controlled, powerful, confidence inspiring.

Even on serves, as someone suggested, it is a great racquet if you serve with effortless movement and let the racquet do the work.

TW’s 89 score really nailed it.

Strings wise, I had the best luck with very thin family of MSV focus strings — regular or soft in 17L. They add a great deal of spin, lighten the SW, add a little bit of power (soft), and retain the tension beautifully. I string around 24kg, depending on the heat. In the winter, I use MSW swift in a cross.

Just some slight wrist discomfort to be expected with a stiffer poly and the touch is not as good as other 100 racquets. Otherwise, yeah I agree!

The Speed on paper is the perfect frame for my style of play but the only knock for me is it 18x20 pattern. I play a flat-ish style but I need spin on tap because I like to open up the court and I need access to short angles, I'm sure with a spin string the Speed can provide plenty of spin but I swore off polys forever. I have arm issues and syn gut is the string that let's me play without any hint of discomfort and that string needs a 16x19 pattern to have decent spin. So, no Speed for me.

The touch issue is a real problem for me. Drop shots attempts are laughably bad, like a lot of sitting ducks floating at the service line. For me, the weight and lowish launch are problematic when pinned behind the baseline, but they make the racquet play great when moving into the court.

Does anyone have experience comparing speed pro to pro staff x?

I just bought a used Speed Pro 2022 and it's 316g unstrung. I was really hoping it would be under spec not over.

I can't confirm SW but it doesn't feel out of my wheelhouse (330 max sw).

Although I've been using polys for competitive play for the last year or so, I've strung the SPro up with Wilson NXT Soft just for a change.

I used multis for a long time to get over injuries so I don't think ill have any issues playing with it.

I can foresee the static weight being too heavy for me, which usually results in a sore shoulder after a long match. Time will tell.

I'm always trying out different frames, but what makes me fall in love with them is how they feel on my 2 handed backhand. I can hit my spinny forehand with almost any racket, but the stability and directional control on my 2hbh has to feel right. On paper the 18x20 and decent sw should make this racket ideal, but ill have to wait for the weekend to find out.

Mine is underspec and I was hoping for over! Strung measurements are 326g and 317 SW. Wanna trade? lol

Both of my 2022s are over spec. 231 and 233.

They play great and most people wanted to bring swing weight on 2022s to low 230s. That is why, I think, 2024 models have higher SW.

A question for 2022 Speed Pro users — how is your experience on the second serve? What type of second serve do you hit with it?

For me, two relative weaknesses are 1HBH top spin and 2nd serve.

Ditto the comment above, I actually find it a very good racket for all serves. It has a great mix of spin, power, and precision. What are you having a hard time with, specifically?

You know, I am not actually having too many troubles with it. Recently I played with EZONE 98 a lot so I forgot my own record with 2022.

Just went to the court to just run some trial first and second serves with speed pro just to check my own words and I was just wrong.

I was shooting serves tired; I played 6-7 hours of tennis in the past 24 hours.

I set two sets of cones on two edges of both serve boxes to aim. First and second.

The results were great. Fast and flat first serves and good slice and slick second ones. High percentage in.

So … I had some faulty memory.

2022 Speed Pro is fantastic on the serve. TW review of 89 is right on mark.

I really enjoyed my first outing with the 2022 Speed pro.

Even with Wilson NXT I found good control and easy spin. I was playing some of my best tennis with it.

My serve is usually my best shot, but I struggled for consistency with my first serve. I need more time to get used to the weight.

What is/was your primary racquet?

What is/was your primary racquet?

My main racket has been the Dunlop CX 200 OS with a little added weigh in the handle (its now 305g unstrung). The SW is 320 but feels really stable and manoeuvrable.

I also buy and sell many rackets on eB** so I've tried almost every other rackets out there.

I had so much confidence playing with the Speed Pro, but the weight / balance threw my serve off. I've only played with it once, so that kind of thing is expected.

I've also had / recovered from a long term shoulder injury, and can often get a sore shoulder after using frames that are too stiff or too heavy. 0 soreness after using the Speed Pro despite the weight. Time will tell with that sort of thing.

Any one switch from the tfight 305 iso to the speed pro?
I’m intrigued with the 2022 specs. Lower SW. 32.5 cm balance strung. Easier to get to 32 cm strung with the pro than the iso too.

The only cons I see with this frame is (2022 speed pro) 23 mm beam. Figured an 18x20 should be atleast 22 mm.

That 23 mm feels so good. Like a bludgeon, but with a precision and feel. You club that ball really hard.
I've used the 2022 version several times now and the performance is amazing. It has a perfect balance between power and control, feels stable on every shot and really gives me the confidence to play well. This is hands down the best performing frame I've personally used, and I've bought and sold hundreds of rackets at this point.

Unfortunately I have a history of shoulder issues, and the weight / swing weight is a tiny bit too much for my shoulder in a long match. The first few matches I played were quite short in length, which led to no discomfort at all. Having used it in a 6-7 6-7 loss, my shoulder was sore the following day. There were many very long service games. I have to be cautious, so I can't switch to any racket that gives me any sort of pain.

Don't take the above as any sort of discouragement to try it out. I think it's amazing and my shoulder problems wont apply to the average person.

I can totally see this. It is a bit of “club”. I am a big guy and the frame works well for me, but I know many people who find it a bit heavy to handle over time.

The worst thing is that it doesn't feel too heavy during a match. It's not like it tires me out or anything. It's just an accumulation thing that results in some soreness the following day.

I had an idea to put in some 19 guage strings and replace the grip with a lighter one. It might be within my limits if I can reduce the weight a little. I'd only be doing that for fun though, I'm aware that reducing the weight is most likely going to have a negative impact on performance.

How is the grip shape/size compared to others? I’ve mostly used L4’s with babolat pure storm tour and Wilson blade. I currently use L3 with TF and leather grip.

Thanks

I’m an L4 in Babolat with my Storm and Strike VS, and my Blade pro is also L4. For me, L4 is right for the Speed Pro too. I happen to have an L5 because it was cheap to buy used, but it’s a touch big with an OG on it. Still not too bad though. If anything Head feels slightly smaller than Wilson.
