Spin racquet

yes, there are topics about spin racquets, but are all from 2015 and older.

so, I am mostly a spin player. due to many years of professional table tennis, where I was, surprise surprise, a spin player, I have a good feel for spin. so I can produce a lot of ball rotation no matter the racquet or string. but I want to maximise this. I currently play with Head Gravity S and MSV Focus Hex Soft (will try Volkl Cyclone and Torque, already tried SP Tornado) and there’s plenty of rotation in the ball (can play flats, too, of course).

we were talking at the club house the other day about my spin and how I can produce so much rotation and also about so called spin racquets - so do spin racquets really unlock even more spin potential or it is just marketing? looking into Head Extreme racquets, which are supposedly spin machines … also Booms. I know Babolat makes spin machines, but never really liked Babolat’s feeling.

I plan to buy a second racquet and being happy with Gravity, am looking at Gravity Team/MP, but if Extreme is really spinny, I’d love to give it a try.

Yeah, the are sticks that will put more RPMs on the ball. Many people will say to have a good balance, with a stick you can hit with spin but also flatten a ball out with pace. Me, on the other hand, I say that I you have one predominant skill, then maximize it the best you can. In baseball, you can hit .220, steal no bases and play poor defense if you a hitting 35-40 homers per year.

is there a big difference between 21’ and 23’ versions? I did demo 23’ and is also discontinued now …

You can hit a lot of spin with the Gravity MP because the racquet face is so wide, meaning you can take a really vertical swing path and loop on a huge amount of spin.

I was talking to a guy who was on tour in the 80’s and he was using a Snauweart Hi Ten 50 and what he used to do is apply hair spray on the string bed to affect the level of spin he was getting.

you think it would still have any noticeable effect with modern shaped strings? :D

I think I recommended the wilson shift to you in a different thread, but you said it's too expensive, and you can't find used ones where you live. The Shift has almost as much spin as a Babolat pure aero. The Shift has new tech where there's a lot of lateral flex to increase spin. It's also light and whippy, which I think is what you like too.

You would probably be happy with a yonex vcore 100 (just get the older one that's on sale now) or the head extreme mp (just get the 360+ used for cheap).

I didn’t like Yonex VCore 100, but I did love the Vcore Pro 100 … and is quite high on the list.
Extreme MP is also high on the list … but Extreme Tour is now heavily reduced and am tempted …

Vcore Pro is not a spin friendly racquet - controlled, good feel, arm friendly yes, but not a "spin" racquet at all. LOVE the Extreme Tour, Extreme MP is good too but harder to control. Currently wavering between the Extreme Tour and Pure Aero 98 - PA98 powerful and easy spin, but ET better feel.

Extreme tour is actually a better racket for someone at your level.

It's marketing. Your strokes do 98% of the work creating spin. No racquet will make a flat hitter into a spin monster. I hit my forehand and serve with quite a bit of spin and can hit the same level of spin with a 73 as I do with a 100. Just play with what you like. If you want to experiment with other racquets because you have the money and it is fun, go for it. Just don't expect any kind of night and day change to the amount of spin you can put on the ball.

haha, honestly - if I could choose my dream job, I would probably be a professional reviewer of mountain bikes and tennis racquets. so yes, I love to tinker with things try new things, but unfortunately, don't have the money to do it ...

on the other hand, that was the answer I was after - love the Gravity, willing to give a try to Extreme. funny thing how things change - in the past there was no chance I would even look at Head racquet(s) ... but now, of all racquet making firms, they produce racquets which suit me the most - love the feeling when hitting the ball, especially Gravity is like a mix of old racquets with new technologies ...

Pure Aero. Tons of spin.
I know, but hate the Babolat feeling ... gave them many chances, just don't like it ...
yesterday, my hitting partner asked me if he could try my Gravity S, and we switched racquets for 10 mins, but that Babolat Pure Drive felt like I am hitting with an iron deck. no feel whatsoever ... lots of power, yes, but zero feel on the ball. even Volkl, with all that dampening tech offers more feel ...

Perfect! Makes your life easier to eliminate certain racquets that don’t feel right to you - both the gravity and extreme are great racquets and you can decide between the two! Agree that head is making great racquets these days for sure.
