Spitting on the court?

Maybe one of my biggest pet peeves. I haven't seen it much.. maybe 3 or 4 times ever. But, it just really ticks me off. If you need to spit then try to spit through the fence.. not on the court where we are playing. It's likely just bad habit leftover from playing baseball or something. Has anyone else seen this?

Definitely have seen it. IMO it should be as against the rules as sweating on the ball is . Woodrow would know.

Depends on why and how. If someone just does a "pffft" type of deal because something got in their mouth I dont see anything wrong with it. If I absolute have to spit for w/e reason, I always do it in the trashcan. I tried spitting through the fence once and that didnt work out so well so I never did it again lol.

And tennis balls in sweat drenched shorts don't gross you out? Do you realize that when handling sweat drenched balls the sweat comes from your opponet's hips and groin?

I can't see getting worked up about sweat on the court when you're holding sweat drenched (tennis) balls.

It's like a "baseball" spit, without the chew. They just spit to spit.

It's like when playing basketball and some idiot spits near the paint. It's just stupid.

I really don't know why some people spit a lot. Weird habit.

I can definitely say...

I wouldnt try to spit through the fence. I'm not talking about a wind screen either, im talking about just your regular chain link fence. I've tried to spit through one before and it like spiderwebed and looked really nasty. Dont do it! lol. Take like 10 seconds and go to a trash can, your bag, or outside on the grass or something.

I have never seen anyone spit either, but it is my first year playing matches in a long time. Maybe I will see it someday.

Gross stuff man. There's a guy who plays on the adjacent court sometimes and he has allergies, and every few minutes he will clear his throat loudly and spit or clear his nose behind the baseline on his side. Good player but it's gross. I have a hard time focusing with all that going on, and worry about the ball going into that court on mishits/shanks. Might just have to hit those balls if it happens.

In college tennis it's a code violation. In other tennis it's not technically against the rules unless you spit at/on another person.

C'mon. It's an easy rule.

Don't spit on the playing surface itself, no matter what.

IF you must spit, hack, loogie up, or whatever, then
you go over to the side, spit in the corner or right at the fence. The minute it hits the ground, you wipe it with your shoe and it will evaporate very quickly. A lot of courts will have some kind of drainage thingie on the edges, spit in that.

On a related subject, no crop dusting the other side's chair on changeovers, ESPECIALLY indoors. Guys know what I mean.

The chance of slipping on a lugie from 2 games ago is extremely small... but not zero. Probably about as significant as the change in the ball's action from having a swipe of the average forehead's amount of sweat on it...

Disgusting stuff.
If it isn't a code violation already, it should be.

It's just as bad when you see some pros doing it on TV.
Carlos Berlocq was spitting all the time when losing to Djokovic at the US Open last year.
Rosol was seen spitting a few times during his match with Nadal.
