Split Step Intensity

Recently started watching the TENFITMEN channel and I really enjoy how he breaks down his points and uses slow-mo.

At 3:05 he plays and breaks down a point mentioning how he didn't split step aggressively enough and remained passive on the ad side of the court. I hadn't split steps described in terms of aggressive vs. passive and it made me think about my own split step...should an aggressive split step be the default regardless of incoming ball?

It's hard to tell whether he meant only that his split should have been more aggressive [ie lower Center of Gravity, wider stance, etc] or that after the split he should have moved towards the ball more aggressively.

I suppose if you do an aggressive split prior to every incoming, you will be optimally prepared. However, this is a tremendous expenditure of energy so keep that in mind also. All the more reason to work on fitness. [The "fit" in "tenfitmen" stands for "fitness".]

there’s definitely a difference in how aggressive i’m split stepping when i’m playing a slow ball counter puncher, vs a hard hitting heavy topspinner...

a difference of “split and move” vs “split and explode”

imo I think he was thinking he sufficiently neutralized the serve to the bh, deep, and would have time to react to the next ball... and maybe even expected the next ball to the bh (typcial cc bh bh rally)
