i've seen the split-step on one leg watching Prince of Tennis, but that's just an anime.

the REAL split-step is like a basketball "power-up" before you get a rebound except faster. When your opponent hits the ball, you jump forward quickly to put your momentum forward so that you get yourself moving. you usually want to do this when your opponent hits the ball or before the ball reaches the net. i suck at explaining so hopefully someone else can enlighten you further.

The split-step, it's basically where you equalize your balance so you can swiftly move left or right at a moments notice and still be balanced. It keeps you unweighted for a short moment, and in that moment you can react so quickly as well as move quickly.

As said above do it after they hit. Jump so your balanced. Your feet should be paralell to each other, slightly apart, and you should jump forward for a split second then quickly change directions by shifting your weight. This happens VERY fast. Incredibly fast.

Pros do it so quickly, you don't even notice it until they or you slow it down to watch. It's also called a split-shuffle, because it can seem like a shuffle for some people because it happens so fast.
