Split stepping?

I've heard a lot about it, but what exactly is split stepping? Just getting on your toes so you can more easily reach the ball?

It is also known as a check step and it is a little jump into the ready position. It is good to do whenever your opponent is making contact with the ball as it allows you to change directions quickly.

well i heard of this but i think its to get ur body ready to react to a shot and slow u down a bit to consider on what to do so the purpose of split step is to slow u down by a bit to consider what to do and also warm ur body up from the stable position like from the phrase "up on ur toes" so this move the split step is to get u ready i think lol
 
It's basically just a little jump, and you land on the balls of your feet. It gets you balanced. I find it particularly helpful right before a volley at the net.
