I was watching one of the Nadal matches don't remember if it was R4 or QF where during the break, the commentator was showing the odds for each player. In earlier times, this was not the case. They not only say the odds but also explain what the - and + mean. Are they urging the viewer to bet. Also during the Miami Open, bet way was a sponsor :-D
Here are a couple of articles. The first one is about the history of gambling in sports and the last is about american sports in the recent past.

Remember, gambling was considered a vice in ancient cultures. How is modern sport any different from the ancient gladiators and chicken fights

Odds vary from betting houses to attract gambles to their property. One property may have Nadal at -275, while another may have him at -265, thus trying to attract people. You'll find that there is not too much of a differential in odds in any sport as the handicappers are pretty sharp.

thanks for proving my point. when you have bookmakers as sponsors, its nothing but recruit unsuspecting noobs to gambling.
Yes, that's the big part of their business.

Pro bookie players are very selective and very restricted in their gambling strategy choice, they are very self-disciplined, so they generate about zero profit for companies.
On the other hand thousands of amateur gamblers playing 'just for fun' (in other words: seeking for adrenaline boost) are the major source of the income in this business.

In the first article, it says people bet their wages in sports gambling. Its immoral but is legal in many countries.

It's ironic and hypocritical. Sports organizations and federations prohibit players from having any association with betting. Didn't UEFA just slap down Zlatan for such that?

Yet they themselves do huge business with betting firms. Many soccer jerseys are sponsored by such firms. Half of the signage around the field is for gambling; the other half for beer. Talking about selling your soul to the 2 biggest devils!

That's just to prevent conflict of interest and match fixing

An increasing number of states are approving sports betting. This is big business. Almost every other commercial during a sporting event where I live is for an online sportsbook.

Two reasons and honestly tennis fans shouldn’t be against them…

One is the sheer amount of revenue sports gambling brings in.

Two is that sports gambling (based on stats and on personal experience) brings in new gambling and casual fans into the sport.

In the US, TV commentators gave the odds even when gambling was illegal everywhere except for a few locations. They know that a lot of money is being bet on sports.

Every major religion talks about avoiding gambling. You don't need to believe in any religion to see why giving away your hard earned money is bad.

Putting bet on sports is another name for gambling.
