Dementieva is a logical choice to win. However I wouldn't be surprised if Sharapova carried her decent Wimbledon form to take this. She loves fast hard courts.

I agree, those two are the favs to win. I think Bartoli/Kleybanova will come through the top section

This is the most interesting field Stanford has had in many years. Many strong, famous players. It's an informal setting, so not uncommon to just run into players warming up on the track outside the tennis center.

Tickets sell pretty well, crowds are knowledgeable and the tennis is usually high quality.

For whatever reason, favorites have not done well at Stanford in the last couple years. Bartoli has played well and the surface seems to suit Stosur's big serve.

Not sure that any player in the draw has really been on a big roll of late, so wouldn't be surprised to see a dark horse come through. Frankly, most of the top half has been pretty weak lately so could be anybody there.

I don't think its such a great field.

Venus, Serena, Clijsters, Henin are all missing.

I do agree that there's no clear favorite here.

Sharapova/Zheng match has started. No live streams unfortunately. Wonder if Sharapova can finally restore some semblance of dignity and finally beat a player who isn't a total mug.

Looks like anti WTA match so far. 7 games played and no breaks of serve.

Sharapova breaks. Will serve for the set at 5-4.

Sharapova takes the first set 6-4

Up a break in second set 3-2.

Sharapova double faulting like crazy now. Hands JZ another break point...

And she breaks... on serve at 3-3.

4-4 right now. JZ to serve,

Sharapova breaks

5-4

Serving for the match

Sharapova appears to be choking. Classic WTA. Break point JZ.

And she saves it. MP Sharapova.

And she double faults on MP. LOL

BP for JZ AGAIN.

Absolutely disgraceful choking by Sharapova. Gets broken when serving for the match having a match point on which she double faulted. I thought she's supposed to be mentally tough?

Radwanska's taken the 1st set of Makiri 7-5 and leads 3-0 in the second.

The first set had some good tennis in it.

Sharapova yelling "come on" in the first game already.

What a mug match. Every rally lasts for about 3-4 hits and always ends in unforced error.

lmao the ESPN is showing Sharapova-Dementieva. Looks like Sharapova is about to melt down, hope Dementieva beats her badly. Why aren't they showing mens matches, are they done for the day? Would be nice if they showed some brilliant Gulbis - Golubev quarterfinal.

Sharapova double faults 3 times in a single game. That's hilarious. DFs in double digits now.

Apparently she says she's back to her pre-injury service motion...I guess her serving is still sucking though.

Maria Sharapova has announced that she is finally overcoming her troublesome shoulder problems and is able to serve with her old service motion more easily. “I knew eventually I would go back, I just didn’t quite know when,” said Sharapova, who underwent shoulder surgery in October 2008. “But I knew that if I was going to come back when I did last year, I had to start with an abbreviated motion. I’m just trying to work myself toward the U.S. Open,” she added. “I’m just happy to be back playing.”

Sharapova breaks to love, but gives the break back right away thanks to a couple of unforced errors and of course another double fault.

Sharapova's second serve is absolutely dire. If she didn't hit a relatively high % of first serves, the match would have been over long ago. 15 double faults and counting.

Dementieva double fault on a break point. Oh WTA.

Stosur cannot play at the net or volley it seems. Absolutley terrible. She is the worst in that regard out of all the former doubles no 1's who have ever played singles.

I dont think she has won a point from the midcourt today.

Boooo Maria S!!!! (I never liked her-somebody suggested I watch her matches with the sound turned off. Maybe I'll change my mind....)

Go Radwanska! You have to beat those damn annoying shriekers.

I´d rather watch those "shriekers" (Sharapova and Azarenka) with a big game for my whole life instead of watching to Radwanska this pusher.
Even though Sharapova is a UE and DF machine.

Pathetic, this Sharapova. Double faults again on a break point after incorrect challenge on the first serve. She can't rally, can't serve and can't play at the net.

Sharapova just got breadstick. Unforced errors: Radwanska 3, Sharapova 15.

This match will come down to Sharapova's serve. Vika regulaly serves 70%+ and if Sharapova throws in too many 2nds/DF's I thinks she will be in trouble.

But Maria has the mental game locked.

I don't think I'll be watching that one. 2 shrieking ball bashing clowns trying to out-UE each other. If I had to guess though, Sharapova will probably win with her superior mental strength as Azarenka is bound to choke at some point.

You know, Mary Carillo gets a lot of heat for calling these players out, but if there are community noise pollution regulations on leaf blowers, car alarms, concerts and so on, there's got to be something done about the shrieking.

Carillo is not exactly like an endearing analyst, but she has a point. There has to be some practical limit to the screaming. There were many times when these games devolved into comedy with the shrieking, whining, and crying.

The spectators laughed A LOT. Mainly out of embarrassment for the players and for the sport in general.
