Stanford Men not in the top 75

How is this possible? I have been critical of the coaches in the past and because of this I have not posted in a while because I wanted to stay positive about the program. But when Cal is at least 1-2 levels better then us and even Santa Clara has been better then us lately then we have major issues here in Palo Alto. In my opinion there are several factors: Scheduling, recruiting and development are huge issues. Whit and Brandon are nice guy's but Stanford Tennis should be upset if they are not in the top10 let alone the top 75. Very embarrassing.

It is jarring to think Cal is at least 1-2 levels better than Stanford, and trounced them 7-0 this past week. Think back to the 90s ... that is inconceivable.
Wow, you are right, even Santa Clara has been stronger than stanford of late.

Yes, coach Whit and Brandon are great guys. I am sure they feel frustrated, but must be trying to work hard, be process-oriented and be patient with the results.

Man, no question cardinal tennis will be back. Cyclical. Too great to fail.

But i must admit, i get a kick out of the bears beating them.
Hey, the cardinal took a nice scalp in basketball this weekend, though.

Morrissey is incredibly quick and can slide on hard courts. I like how he plays.

Lives in SoCal now. I liked his work with the Smiths. Some good solo tunes, too -- a staple of the "early 90s complaint rock" genre. Basically a crooner in the modern rock mileu, who relied heavily on distinctive guitars and a strong bassline.

Haha I see what you did there :)

And if you have five seconds to spare....

Then i'll tell you the story of my life
Sixteen, clumsy and shy
I went to STANFORD and tried
The city of palo alto y....wca.

Well, take heart. stanford's tennis faithful will be singing happier songs next year.

Anyone know what Ryan Thacher is up to now? Went pro at same time as Klahn but hasn't played since 2012 so presume he's moved on to other endeavors....

I can't figure out why my alma mater, UCSB, is not ranked, and is behind school like Buffalo ? That makes so sense.

They have a ton of losses because they play a very tough schedule. They are probably better than a team like buffalo but the Gauchos have no chance of being ranked with that record.

its not the tough opponents, UCSB is just too bad in my opinion, losing to Hawaii Pacific and Arizona does not help, they ve en lost to St.Johns. Buffalo has beaten Cornell ! St.Johns lost 0-7 to Cornell ! So St Johns is much worse as Buffalo...and UCSB lost To St.Johns....
any questions about it???

i still say nolan paige should have stayed near home at yale where they have better academics and a better men's tennis team (currently ranked)

i guess he was willing to accept worse tennis for the better weather

how is stanford's coach still not fired? what he has done with a once great program in the last handful of years is an unreal failure

They have played 6 dual matches this season. That's just ridiculous. Is this a collegiate sports team or a casual group of friends who like to play tennis on the weekends?

Problems here:

1. Rained out matches against USC and UCLA. (Time to build some indoor courts, especially for a location that is in the rotation for NCAA tourneys.)

2. West Coast traditions like the Sherwood Cup and the Pacific Coast Doubles are not team events. Individual events belong in the fall season. Lots of schools around the country were playing dual matches on those weekends.

3. Because problem #2 is known well in advance, you have to schedule more dual matches to compensate for it.

4. Counterpoint to #3: If you are good enough to make the NTI final 16, you get extra matches instead of time off. Usually Stanford can make the NTI, but not this year.

Sounds like the perfect storm of problems converging at once.

there are enough teams in the region to play, LMU; UCSB, both San Diego schools
even can travel to Boise or so.
Cal Poly, Pacific..okay they played both
but there are enough teams to play every year

oh so play boise
and there are still 11 matches left..so sth can happen
but minimum to beat usc or ucla or cal or boise to have any chance for ncaas

perhaps this was a rhetorical question

if not, i think most likely a collegiate sports team, though it has gotten hard to tell since klahn, clayton, etc graduated

I played the guy before, he ran me around like a rabbit, I was wrecked after 2 games. I didnt think then he was that fast actually but his forehand is huge.

^That^ is different from the environment coach Gould fostered in the 80s and 90s.

What do you mean? Lemonade and iced tea brought in on china and silver? Less conditioning? Hushed tones and golf claps? Less mental training and lowered expectations?

Actually, not 7-6 in the third, but 7-6, 7-6 for Romanowicz.

Still, a rather startling result. "Oh, how the mighty have fallen."

I am sure that Fedace is celebrating this wonderful, dominating win over a celebrated, very tough opponent, UNLV. As everyone knows, UNLV is certainly one of the top programs in the USA.

I am sure this is just a precursor to Standford getting back into the top 5, by next year.

UNLV is an average team at best that is poorly coached from what I understand. I can't believe that former players are happy with this program right now. Since I live in Palo Alto, I do hear some rumblings that some prominent alumni are getting quite frustrated.

do tell... it getting pretty bad up there... Pac 10(now 12) was a solid conference with UCLA,USC,CAL and Stanford... now it's a two horse race...

If I was good enough to play for Stanford, I would go to get the best education possible. Stanford has the best CS program in the world.

not to mention Washington and Arizona going into the tank. (UW it's only a one year thing hopefully). Only Oregon is improving in the Pac 12

at least one poster gets it.
No place on earth like it, period.
Oh, alums at every school freak every now and again
until any program can get to 10% of what Stanford has done and stands for, it is just chatter
not many kids who can get in, decide to go somewhere else

I really wish I knew the unmatched joy of going to Stanford. Its only for the best among us though.

probably someone who has gone to multiple top universities including stanford is qualified to make that statement

aka not you, unless you're kj hippensteel, in which case my apologies, go on (not to imply duke and stanford are alone as top universities, two fish in a big pond, just he's a name that came to mind)

I love how when a once mighty athletic team at a top academic institution falls to mediocrity the excuses start to flow. Oh they can't get the best athletes, their admission standards are so high, blah, blah, blah. They did it before, for years. What's different now? Oh yea, the coach. Heard the same whining's before from Notre Dame Football and others. Get over it, they are what they are, Accept it and move on, or push for a change.

They made the Quarterfinals two years ago and nearly beat Virginia. Now suddenly the academics requirements are too high.

at least 2 Ivy teams are better than them now... I'm sure Ivy academic standards are as tough if not tougher for entrance..
