Stanford Men not in the top 75

Classic comedy from the article:

Quote:
And for someone who was looking to watch great college tennis, what better school to attend than Stanford?

That is true if you go there you are guaranteed to see USC and UCLA at least once a year and Cal too.

Classic comedy from the article:

some of my favorites:

"Who wouldn’t expect there to be an adjustment period? Was it really reasonable to expect the team to fill the shoes of two of the best collegiate tennis players of the decade without even the slightest hiccup?"

ok klahn was good, won an NCAA title, i won't argue whether he was or was not among the best of the past decade, though certainly not the level of college success of a Somdev or Stevie J

but thacher...lol

and

"The fact that the team made the NCAA tournament last year was a testament to the coaching staff and player development that happens at Stanford."

hahaha, now we're saying Stanford player development is awesome if they make the tournament

wow how the bar has fallen

they must think they are getting some really ****** recruits nowadays if they think making them NCAA tourney level players is an accomplishment - though i don't totally disagree :)

embarrassing article given their history

Southern Cal lost Steve Johnson(really was the best player in a decade in college tennis) and Daniel Nguyen so naturally they should have dropped to borderline NCAA level right? No they made the quarterfinals last year still because its called recruiting and reloading. It's what truly elite programs and coaches do. Which Stanford is not anymore

Then, a year later, Andres Gomez turned pro early, on top of the departures of Johnson and Nguyen, so they must really be a disaster this year, right?

to think one poster from years ago can still get to a few of you guys
this was a student (former lower level jr. player) writing an article
the kids are playing hard, studying hard
time to move on from fedace
3 of the top recent recruits have either played just a portion of the season or not at all
FYI, Klahn had major back surgery & still performed well & is now a top 100 pro,
not much to discuss & Ryan had a great college career, most jrs. tennis players would love his record & degree
let's try to get into the Easter season & show a bit of restraint
enjoy the conference tourney & ncaa's guys, should be fun to follow once again

Jealousy is the sincerest form of flattery. Card/Nerd grads go into the world (of Facebook, Google, Instagram, et al) with positive entitlement and a true sense of tennis victory.

:)

yeah, always hoped to work for Instagram when I was growing up, alas with my $h!tty luck I didn't go to stanford and had to settle for duke and an MD instead

the reason people are making fun of this article is that it's absurd, not because they're jealous of stanford tennis, this isn't the 1990s - it's 2014, a down year for duke with two top players off the court for the season (mengel, redlicki) and their most embarrassing loss i can remember (elon), yet they're still more than 20 ranking slots ahead of that team in palo alto

i'm a bit jealous of uva tennis, ucla tennis, and some others, however

the article said he was one of the best college tennis players of the decade, that's what i laughed at

sure he did fine / well / dandy / great / super-duper, those are all somewhat reasonable descriptions, but the fool who wrote that article made a different claim

it does say Stanford daily,,,correct ? of course they are going to hype it up a bit. Ryan Thacher was one of the BEST juniors to come out of boys 18 division in years. so you ask, why didn't he win the NCAA title ?
Thacher was plagued by back injury every single year he played on the team. I don't think he had one year where he was healthy all the way thru the season. Injury is part of the sport, sure. But it had a lot to do with why he wasn't the dominating D1 player as he was expected to be when he joined Cardinal squad.

your answer to your question is one possibility - i'll go with 'because he went to stanford' - not a bad life decision, but not a good men's tennis decision nowadays

Only reason to go to Dook: Couldn't get into Carolina out-of-state.

i'll say one thing for nolan's team at stanford - they have already made the NCAA tourney more times than you did playing soccer for UNC '71-'74 (sources say zero times) - those must have been the good old days though, when a soccer team played only 10 games a year, and being a true student-athlete was very doable (granted, some still do pretty well at it nowadays, but much harder with the busy schedules)

btw, sounds like you're a good ambassador for tennis, and your kid is obviously doing well being a D1 tennis player at a great university, so hope you know i'm just giving you (and him sometimes, when you trump him up despite rough W-L patches) a hard time that i doubt either of you give a damn about

your fairfield stags going to be better than stanford anytime soon? don't steal their recruits!

Mike: Wow. Very impressive. How can I hate Dook when there are alums like you around? In fact, our son Nolan has a few friends in Durham who are phenomenal guys, too. Stop! As for the Stags good things are happening as they are on the Farm. Keep loving college tennis.

Stanford may crack the top 25 next week

Stanford with Huge momentum going into Pac-10 tourney and NCAA tournament. Cardinal a dark horse to win the NCAA championships.

Stanford wins the Big Slam 4-2 as Morrisseey beat McLachlan on 1, 1-6,6-3,6-4. Match on 5 was abandoned

Great win for Stanford today, considering the team is so young and still plagued by injuries (Maciek R.). BTW, it's been great to see Nolan playing again and winning! Love his attitude and sportmanship. Once the whole team is healthy, they'll be right back in the top 15 or better, where they belong.

Yes, when Maciek comes back and with Nolan at 100%, this team will be a threat to win any dual meet with top 10 teams. they will be dangerous in NCAA tournament. much like Stan Wawrinka at the French open this year.

3 of the top 10 juniors coming in next year. this could mean repeat as NCAA champion.
