Stanford Men

Coria who's one of the top players in the ATP tour didn't know what hit him

I would argue that he is one of the top players on tour. He certainly is top 100, but his career high ranking is 49. Maybe you got him confused with his brother Guillermo?

Interesting to see how both Boyer and Basavareddy have excelled once leaving Stanford.

Side note though. I am interested to see how Stanford does this year in the new conference. They (as with every year) have the talent to do well but their travel schedule is brutal and I don't know if they can hang in.

Am a bit puzzled Kang didn't play yesterday in the opener against St Mary's. Would have liked to see him in action ahead of the really tough one coming up against TCU on Friday. He's going to be key to any success the Card have. He has beaten the top college players in ITFs. Hopefully he can translate that to the college level.

The players individually didn't have good college Falls although they did have good pro results. So, not sure how they'll do in the dual season. Could miss Indoors again as they are in the Oklahoma bracket. Oklahoma is ranked 10.

I don't see them getting out of that bracket. Just a bad gut feeling I get about it.

Let's go Card, will be playing #2 ranked TCU tomorrow, let's beat these overrated team and move into #1 spot

  • The 17th-ranked Cardinal continues the 2025 spring slate - its first ahead of an ACC campaign - against No. 2 TCU on Friday, Jan. 17 at 4 p.m. PT.

Stanford got blanked by TCU. Not surprising. Really concerned about the continued absence of Kang from the lineup. Without him, the Card will have a tough time winning.

Good to see Banerjee went close in a 3-setter with Pinnington Jones. HVDS, Rivera and Godsick also took their matches the distance. Basing needs to step up in his final season. Counting on him.

On to the Kickoff next weekend. First up Oregon. Hopefully Kang plays and they win that one.

I don't know TCU that well. does a #2 ranking take into account they no longer have Fearnley and Gorzny.
if the Card had Kang in the line up, i suspect the match would have been more competitive, especially given the four three-set matches. I'm not saying they would have won (or loss), but i believe the teams are closer than the score reflects.

I believe the rankings reflect roster turnover. But I hear you. TCU played a close one against Baylor too if one were to look beyond the 4-1 scoreline. So, not entirely sure if this is early season form or a sign of how the season will go for them.

That being said, the Card are once again underperforming (w/ or w/o Kang). They need Rivera and Godsick to step up big time as sophomores for the team to be a factor in the national conversation. If that doesn't happen, they could easily slide to 25-35, especially if Kang is unable to play.

Can you say scary good ? Cardinal downs #8 team in the country, easily i might add. This puts Stanford as #3 team in the country.

what is going on with Kyle Kang? What position would he play if he is healthy?

In the pic he looks to be fit. Not in cast or such. Don't know what's up but it's something that kept him out of an all important kickoff weekend. Hopefully, he can come back soon. He's certainly in the Top 3 along with Banerjee and Basing. Kang had a terrific summer making finals and semis of several 25Ks. He will immediately upgrade the lineup significantly.

Impressive win actually. Oklahoma was pumped up and promoted a big crowd to come. The lopsided singles results were a surprise. I thought it would be a tight 4-3 decision. Oklahoma certainly doesn't want to see Stanford anymore in tennis with last year and now this year.

Kang beat ethan quinn in the challenger tournament last year. enough said

Stanford headed to Waco (Baylor site). Looks like they'll draw Columbia in the first round if one goes by rough seedings. The Card will be the sixth seed with Baylor and UCF below them taking on TCU and Ohio State. Columbia is likely to be the 3 seed. And Duke v San Diego will be the fourth first round match at the site.

so, the 3 SEC teams will all be in the other 8 team group?

Card downed USC 4-2. Lost the doubles point again but played very well in singles winning 3, 4, 5 and 6. Must say the bottom of the lineup is coming together well. Gives Stanford multiple pathways to a win. Now if they can just win doubles. They switched up the pairings but still no success.

Stiffer test against UCLA tomorrow.

Couldn't watch live. But Stanford won doubles at 2 & 3. And then won singles at 1, 3, 4. Again goes back to options the Card have to get to 4 wins. Shout out to HVDS who went 2-0 in both doubles and singles over the weekend. Also to Rivera who delivered in singles both days. Now they need Kang back healthy and they can make some noise. I don't believe they are a national contender but they could play Columbia tough if they match up against them at Indoors.

The team is very solid this year. HVDS is the difference IMHO. He's a a veteran that plays high in the lineup. Puts less pressure on the underclassmen. Once Kang gets back into the lineup, they're a top 10 team easily. agree, probably not a national contender, but they they'll go deeper than most.

Hopefully Kang's active for Indoors. Even if Columbia (expected opponent) beats Stanford, there could be a couple of winnable matches for the Card in the back draw.

if Card win the National indoors, they are sure lock to win the NCAA championship in may. This team is so powerful, you can just send them out as davis cup team and they will probably win it all as well.

Was looking through Kang's pro record. He beat Ethan Quinn, Michael Zheng and Cannon Kingsley, all in the past year. That's two NCAA champs and a top order Buckeye. The Card need him back on court right now! They could ease him in and have him firing by the end of the season. Ofc, don't know what's keeping him from playing.

Men are looking solid against Columbia. Kang played doubles but not singles. Samir beat Zhang in straight.

The team is gonna be really solid when Kang joins singles. not sure what the difference is this year (adding HVDS helped with depth big time), but it's working. they confidence is going to grow with each win. look out TCU.

Team is better without Basavareddy. Who could have predicted that?
Yea, it is surprising. but difference is Banerjee is playing almost as well as Nishesh did last year at #1. and Basing at #2 is now healthy and looks like playing at his top form couple of years back. and now at #6, freshman is proving he will win consistently at #6 spot, which we didn't have before. and Godsick is vastly improved player and now he can win most of the time at #5 spot. It wasn't like this last year, and that seem to be the difference.

Agree HVDS has added veteran leadership. Banerjee has matured. Basing is healthy. But most importantly the Card have the 6th spot almost locked down with Razeghi.

Also Kang’s laser forehand was looking great in doubles. They were trying to target his backhand but he was running around and unloading his forehand. Lastly, what a win for Banerjee to get the better of the best player in college tennis in straight sets handing him his first loss in fifteen college matches going back to All Americans.

kang's forehand has been clocked around 120 MPH

Great to see Kang back playing singles again. Once he gets going the Card would have the luxury of playing HVDS at 4 which would make the bottom half of their lineup really a tough nut to crack. Still think Texas, Wake, UVA and TCU are the frontrunners. But beyond them the field is crowded.

Is this Goldstein's best team ever?
Interesting that Kang goes into the singles lineup. Razeghi stays at 6. Godsick played 5 on Friday and and he gets bumped out of singles lineup.
Acc to Gruskin the 2017 team that had Geller, Fawcett etc and made the Indoor final was better. But this team’s probably next best. There have been better individual players in the recent past like Geller, Fery and Basavareddy but those teams didn’t come together like this one is. It’s early still and outdoors is a different ballgame but Stanford hadn’t made a mark at Indoors in a long time. So this is a different experience. Let’s see how the season goes from here.

Razeghi has been arguably the team mvp in the early going. Iirc he's lost just once until now while winning most of his matches easily in straight sets. So, he's gonna play unless he slips up. Godsick has been playing well too but has several DNFs. It's a numbers game at this point. Ideally, Rivera, him and Razeghi could be platooned in the 5 & 6 spots. But Godsick is an absolute must in doubles. He's the best player on the team.
