Stanford Men

Razeghi has been arguably the team mvp in the early going. Iirc he's lost just once until now while winning most of his matches easily in straight sets. So, he's gonna play unless he slips up. Godsick has been playing well too but has several DNFs. It's a numbers game at this point. Ideally, Rivera, him and Razeghi could be platooned in the 5 & 6 spots. But Godsick is an absolute must in doubles. He's the best player on the team.
Godsick is a quality individual as well. I hope they can pull an upset and knock off the horned frogs.

I could see the Card pulling off a 4-3 upset vs TCU if Kang is healthy and in doubles and singles. It is surprising how well this team is performing (I certainly didn’t expect it with basavareddy’s departure). It does feel they have depth they have been missing. Razeghi and HVDS is a big part of that.

Kang seems to be bit rusty in last match in singles, he needs to pick it up if they are going to beat the frogs. i wonder if the card are going to eat this for dinner tonight ?

TCU was too strong. The doubles point was super competitive tho. Came down to a tiebreaker on court 3 (7-10). I need to see the replay of that. TBH I wasn’t able to watch the streaming. But gotta be proud of the boys. great win vs Columbia. Better year than I expected so far. Playing well as a team.

Imho the best player on TCU is Vives. Uses the court so well. Simply outplayed Basing.

Kang was beginning to figure out Maxted. Banerjee played Pinnington on even terms including an unreal angled tweener pass.

But the Frogs were too good down low at the 5&6 spots which should have favored the Card.

Goes to show there’s still separation between the top 4 and Stanford but they did beat #6 Columbia comfortably. All in all it’s been a good season so far interestingly bookended by the two TCU sweeps. Hope to see them inside the Top 10 when the next rankings come out.

Former Stanford grad Arthur Fery doing will in the pau challenger. Long tipped by many here, well one here anyway, to win Wimbledon as a teen he seems to have lost his way a bit. I wish him well.

He was on the Changeover podcast where he talked at length about his injury problems. Apparently had a fracture in his humerus (upper arm) which took forever to heal. Happy to see him back competing.

Had worked his way up to 229 in the ATP rankings before the injury.

I read somewhere it's not the new courts with the roof just the old ones resurfaced. New courts under construction (according to what I read).

The new six court covered facility is built in the same space that was previously "Taube South" across the street from the main facility, however there was far more than a basic resurfacing done. The courts look great. The new tennis stadium will not be done until sometime in 2026. The covered courts will be a real asset to the teams (as well as the tennis playing campus community when the teams are not using them) as they previously had to find court space for practice on rainy days at one of the very few indoor facilities in the area... and also faced potential cancellations of rained out dual matches. There are very few indoor courts in Northern California and none that are very close to the campus and those clubs are likely unwilling to give up multiple courts on a rainy day with short notice. I'm not sure what effect they will have on the wind as these courts are not really "indoors" they have normal court fencing and wind screens with a kind of mesh netting from the top of the fence to the roof. I'm not sure whether either the wind screens or netting will eliminate all or even most wind.

So rain will probably get in. No?

I think the screening will keep most rain out unless it is raining very hard and windy as well. There is no rain forecast for Palo Alto this week so it may take some time before we really know.

Yes, pretty satisfied. Though I moved to the East Coast now so I can't go to the games in person anymore. Also, I'm a bit less keen on the team even though they're probably better than years past because I don't see anyone on the roster with real pro potential. We were spoilt for a few years with Fery, Basavareddy, both of whom I think will have top 100 careers with extremely aesthetically pleasing games

Oh very true. It's much more fun to follow a team when you can actually attend matches. Makes you feel more connected. College tennis probably had the biggest gap in enjoyment between in person and not in person of any sport because of the relatively poor alternative options of just live stats or streaming streaming (vs other sports being on TV with HD views and coverage all the time)

Please tell me why there is a roof over Stanford's new courts. Weird.
Because every now and then it rains there. And because they could not get the permit to be able to build actual indoor facility. That 'covering' is meant to keep the rain out, as well as pretty much most of the wind if there's any. It's actually not a bad idea.
The actual Taube stadium courts will not be done for a while. When done they will have a more college like layout with 6 courts in line so you can see all the matches at the same time from a single seat. Plus there will be I think 6 more courts there. It makes a lot of sense since there's no WTA tournament there anymore, so making it a facility for college match format is a no brainer.

Yeah, ive tried watching some of the live streams and everything but the finals are not great viewing. hey, maybe I'll become a Columbia fan for the season! Their schedule is a bit boring though, they pretty much just have the ivies and penn state. Kinda odd given how many quality opponents are on the east coast and how strong their team is.

Tough weekend coming up against Wake and NC State on the road.

Wake beat the Card 4-1 in the R16 of NCAAs last year with the only point coming from Basavareddy. He's gone and Wake is a stronger team this year. So looks like a no-contest on paper.

NC State could also be challenging but there Stanford at least has a shot as the matchups aren't totally lopsided.

Should mention Kang seems to be rounding into form. He's won hist last three sets 6-1. Should be good news for the Card.

Basavareddy fell to Shapovalov in the opening round in Acapulco 5&2 after qualifying into the MD. Shapo has been playing some of his best tennis in recent months winning the Dallas Open over Ruud.

Hopefully NB gets a qualies wildcard for Indian Wells.

My guess is he'll get a WC into IW, his play certainly deserves it. Looks like only Eubanks and Tien are ahead of him from the Americans that would also need one so there's probably plenty WC's to go around.

I believe Tien and Fonseca were already awarded wildcards among the next gen guys that don't qualify by virtue of their rankings. Michelsen, Fils and Mensik are in the MD. Not sure about Van Assche.

Honestly idk what is up with NB physically…I watched the shapo match and after 5-5 he just could not move into his backhand
My guess is he's overplaying and his team will have to figure out what his workloads needs to be to avoid injury and build him up slowly and injury free over time. What concerning is he seems to have injuries take him out 2 - 3 times each year. Is his team pushing too hard or allowing him to train and play too much, or is maybe this one just bad luck? All the best to him, he's a strong talent for sure.

Holy crap what a rally from the Cardinal. It was looking like an easy Wake win for most of the match and now Stanford is in position to steal a win.

Gonna come down to Kang/Robertson. This will be good

Really happy despite the loss. The dubs was close too. Rivera was about to close out Pow. Had dubs gone Stanford's way, the Card could have gotten this one.

Wake didn't have Dostanic but Stanford was without Razeghi for singles. The only concern would be Banerjee who is winless since beating Zheng. Great wins from Basing and HVDS.

Excellent ACC debut against the #1 team.

Wake Forest was missing their #1....and Stanford still can't get a win ???
Wake is not the best team in the nation without Dostanic in the lineup. This is not a good result for the Cardinal.

I was expecting a Wake sweep with Dostanic in the lineup. They went 4-3 (almost) without him in the lineup. I'd call that a good showing relative to my expectations.

Also Wake has like 20 players on their roster. While Dostanic makes a difference, they are still a darn good team in his absence.

that's debatable. As we know, if #1 player is missing then every other player essentially plays one spot higher than normal. That is normally a huge difference. I would say that result does not really mean much.

The cumulative UTRs of the respective lineups that played yesterday are 79.2 for Wake and 79.7 for Stanford. That's a statistical dead heat.

With Dostanic in there for Wake and Razeghi for Stanford, the respective figures are 80.1 and 79.8. So Dostanic's absence while somewhat of a handicap isn't crippling and certainly doesn't render the contest meaningless.

Wolf meat is next on the menu

Wolfpack 4-2 over the Card. Some issues to sort out no doubt. Some inconsistent output from the lineup. HVDS continues to shine. Banerjee had a very good win over Shick. But was expecting more from Kang who went 0-2 on this road trip. Need wins from him if Stanford is to test the quality teams. Also, Razeghi's absence down at 6 is a problem. He was almost a lock.

Let's hope for better days following this 0-2 start in ACC play.

Wolves cheated by moving the match indoors, we will get our revenge in NCAA tournament. Anyhow Max fighting valiantly at #2 spot to a dude that can't toss the ball to save his life. When max saw Nico going down 6-1, 2-0 on the other court,, he lost some energy and other dude gained momentum from there to win it in the tiebreaker. Don't feel bad Max, Nico wasn't coming back on that one...lol

Anyway, Card have bunch of home matches at home coming up hosting ACC opponents,, lets see if we can win 8 in a row,, those ACC guys won't be able to wake up at all due to jetlag. GO CARDINAL
