Nishesh is NOT an ATP player: Not athletic, Not fast, Not strong, No dominant weapon, Injury prone, Only 5'10" on a good day. His biggest asset is consistency and court sense - both are must haves on atp tour along with all the other things he doesnt have. MAYBE he gets to top 200. Getting back to the team; Goldstein has to go. He has no idea what he's doing as a coach, as a manager, as a mentor, as a motivator, as a facilitator of team morale - In fact, most of his players dont respect him as a coach, nor do his peer coaches. Fery and Boyer who both left the team early (thankfully for them) may have a shot at a decent pro career. Fery (who is also undersized) has a more powerful game than Nishesh, with bigger serve and is a much better athlete. Boyer who is 6-2" and probably the best overall athlete Goldstein has had so far, has a high atp ranking of 193 recently, has 3 challenger semi appearances, 2 challenger finalist appearances, and won a challenger title in his first 12 months since playing full time on tour - which is incredible and one of the fastest rising players. He also has two top-50 wins (Table and Dardierri) on clay which is their native surface, and a couple top-100 wins. Boyer was serving at 129 mph at the French Open quails a couple weeks ago and barely lost. Fery has had a few Challenger semi appearances as well and a high atp of 240 - he is a super smart and gritty player with an atp upside too. Fery can have some great results on grass too. If you cant win an NCAA title with Geller, Fery, Boyer, Basing as your core group, you dont deserve to be coaching any D1 team.

remember he is only 19, the ATP Tour prime is now closer to 25, if NB's body can hold up I think he will be fine and possibly Top 100, he does a great job taking ball early and dictating the point, he just needs the consistent experience of the grind on tour, which he is doing this summer. Sorry but making a SF at a 75K means he is an ATP Player, he may not be Top 25-50 material but he has potential to do very well.

Fery playing doubles this week with Marcus Willis, once described by Dan Evans as having the best hands in tennis. He should learn a lot.

Yes. Recently he's been making a doubles comeback (2nd time coming back I think) playing mostly with Christian Harrison on the challenger tour. He's up to 110 in dubs. My guess is he's playing with fellow Brit Fery on the grass circuit in an attempt to win a Wimbledon WC. Willis is a crafty lefty for sure.

Cant believe youre even asking that question: 1) DeMinaur (Demon) is an incredible athlete, 2) he is unbelievably fast, 3) he hits huge 4)has a big serve - do I need to name anything else? (not sure what "Diaz" youre referring to)

If Nishesh stays healthy top 100 is very reasonable...to pretend otherwise with his results is a bit absurd imo...agreed that he prob wont ever be a top 50/30 mainstay. He's only played a couple challengers and made finals, sf, etc...
 
The other thing about Nishesh is that he is already physically mature and has been so for most of junior career which is one reason why he was successful in juniors - he matured physically early. Whereas players like Fery and Boyar were not physically mature until after junior, and both grew a bit early in college. That matters a lot when youre talking about development and upside. I would much rather put my money on a later bloomer with athleticism and physicality, than a player that was tall for his age in 12s and 14s and not such a great athlete
 
I had to look up Baez I thought he was really tall but is only 5'7. Scotland has a young junior really small Charlie Robertson, you should recruit him.

All fair points but given we have been assured Fery is winning the Wimbledon singles they may have to withdraw early.

Won a round in doubles and lost R1 2&3 to Kukushkin in singles. He needs to start making deeper runs or else he’ll be stuck around the 200s making no money. Not that it would matter bc in looking him up I learned his dad owns a French soccer club!

He is coming back from some sort of injury. Provided he's healthy now, I anticipate him having some better results this month on the grass circuit and summer hard courts. He has a good game, fun to watch and is an excellent athlete, hope he does well.
 
Go arthur, Rothey open coming up. could be a good experience before wimbledon

Fery comes a cropper losing in three sets. 6-3 in the third. Disappointing L, I mean Pinnington is very good but Fery should have handled him. I have this sneaky feeling he’ll tap out in the 150-250 range. Ofc I hope he proves me wrong. Also I am going to repeat that imo Basavareddy has the higher ceiling.

I think his brief body of work makes it too early to tell. It just gets a little wonky to judge career potential given just this weeks results using on paper matches with no context. JPJ beat Peniston Q1 in 3, then beats Fery in 3. Both Peniston and Fery are coming off recent injuries and just starting to play again in the last few weeks. Give it a little time. I'd venture to say looking at Dan Evans on paper and knowing his social life background around the same age as Fery, we'd say he'd never have cracked the top 150.

Fair points. As I said, hope he proves me wrong. Would be delighted to see him follow or even outdo Evans.
 
Fery has never been someone who was going to succeed on tour - no chance of ever finishing the year inside the top 100, little chance of top 150

the list could go on til infinity of guys who were tenacious baseliners, and among the biggest fish in the pond in NCAAs, but were undersized and had no reasonable path to the top 100 once they were competing on tour

which isn't a knock on them - Cunha is my favorite college tennis player. ever. and up there with guys like Somdev as the best I ever saw play NCAA tennis (beat #1 Steve Johnson and #2 JP Smith as a freshman, went undefeated at #1 in ACC play as a freshman, was the 1 seed in NCAA singles and doubles events as a freshman, 151-31 singles and 147-32 doubles career records for Duke playing the top line all along) - and he didn't translate it into an ATP career - similar size and style of play, except Fery is worse, and Fery won't have an ATP career either

Don’t know how it’ll eventually turn out for Fery but have to give it to you for a well laid out argument. Enjoy reading posts like this one. As an aside didn’t know Crawford is undersized (assuming you included him to support your case).
 
I wouldn't necessarily say Fery is a tenacious baseliner. He hits quite flat, as a pretty conservative grip on that forehand, and looks to come in often. He made it somewhat competitive against medvedev by serve+volleying last year in wimbledon. He was progressing quite well before his injury. His run in the European indoor challenger circuit post USO, which I think are some of the toughest events of the year was very impressive. Personally I think he has top 100 potential but we'll see, I've been following Karue Sell's comeback and I simply cannot believe how hard the tour is. Still not sure if he or Nishesh will peak higher bc of Nishesh's injury woes. I am biased though as Fery is by far and away my favorite watch live

Crawford is listed as 5'11", Cunha was listed as 5'10", Fery 5'9"

obviously some players make it at this height, but it's tougher

even worse, in that case

less groundstroke margin for error in the era of heavy poly baseliners, and his volleys better be as good as Rafter / Edberg / Henman if he's trying to make a career of being frequently at net as a 5'9" player in the current era of racquet and string technology

Pinnington is very talented player but Fery will beat him next time. Look for Fery to beat Djokovic at wimbledon
 
Card returning to Norman for kickoff weekend. Play Oregon first and if they win, take on Oklahoma. If Basavareddy returns I like their chances as Oregon will be without Vandecasteele and Oklahoma without Martinez. Would be a shame if they missed indoors again.

What would really help is if Stanford had more than 1 indoor court on campus. I'm actually surprised they did not want to go outdoors to Tallahassee or to a lesser extent, Tucson

I heard they are building a six court indoor facility with construction underway. Don’t know if it’ll be ready in time. However, this team has been pretty decent indoors. Their win over Oklahoma in the NCAAs a couple months ago came indoors bc of rain. In fact the entire match was played inside with the Card posting a 4-2 victory. They didn’t even need Basavareddy to win in singles although he was up against Martinez and serving for the match but DNF.

Tucson would be a no-no. Arizona’s a better team. I think Harvard would have been the ideal destination with their top three gone but A&M as the higher seed grabbed that. It sucks that there are two Indoors hosts next year neither of whom would have hosted kickoff next spring. Stanford actually blanked SMU at the same Oklahoma regional at the NCAAs and Baylor has seen better days.

Congrats to Basavareddy on being an All American, an Academic All American, and being recognized as one of the most outstanding sophomores at Stanford. All this while pursuing a degree in data science which must be pretty challenging particularly at the farm. Most elite athletes I am aware of take easier classes. Takes a lot of dedication to excel on and off the court in the manner he has.
