Yup no problem giving Lin some academic props - joins a nice line of scholars like hippensteel and hirschman from that program

Just gave epaige some pushback because his two consecutive posts were not benign - taking a lame swipe at UVA based on some acronym I've never heard while going to college in the ACC - and continuing to perpetuate the tiresome argument that Stanford has such different standards, Harvard with sports blah blah blah, and that's why they aren't elite anymore (couldn't be that their coach simply isn't an inspiring leader like the rest of the great programs right now, and seems to be struggling to develop talent which recruits notice)

But good if Stanford's AD believes the same thing - hopefully whit will stay around forever while some other programs pile up the same kinds of academic accolades AND maintain top teams

Academics have not effected Stanford's football recently.

Exactly - and when academics are truly a limiting factor bigger sports with on the average dumber athletes (sorry for generalization) get affected first

Duke tennis is able to survive even if the occasional recruit like Tripper Carleton has had to decommit based on academics, because fortunately most great tennis players are also pretty good students, and only need a couple tennis recruits every year that fit with your school

Duke football, however, is an annual exercise in futility even if our coach works out both the manning brothers with their receivers every summer and is universally respected as an offensive and QB coaching beast - simply can not get the guys he needs through the door in high enough numbers for a big team like that, admissions only makes so many exceptions

If Stanford football is great, Stanford tennis can certainly be great - they do have top notch academics and should be commended for that, but it's not the limiting factor on their tennis success

ps for those that had to endure the horrible times on this board back when db and I thoroughly debated this topic a couple seasons ago, i promise i'll let those couple posts suffice on my end and go back to only making fun of stanford on the tennis side of things :) , no more academic talk this season

Mike all good posts but you need to spell Dook correctly.

haha, now that I have heard plenty around tobacco road, even if i missed out on the ABC thing

in the end, i think we can both appreciate a good scholar-athlete, so props to Lin, just remember some other schools around the country aren't terrible either :)

even though this is thread is about Stanford men's ... I want to mention how much the women's team has disappointed me .. so much talent on that team.. almost everyone of those girls at one time had thoughts of going pro,and now they are struggling so much ... KH wanted to turn pro after such a great junior run.. she lost yesterday 6-0,6-1 ... at Ojai... WTH ? Gibbs fell off the map... Ahn.Tan,Tsay.. all top junior player recruits ...

I tell you.. it's the air up there... bad for tennis players...

I've always liked the acronym that Virginia uses: ABC (Anybody But Carolina). Says so much about a school when they define themselves by others' misfortune.

I am not familiar with ABC. I personally root for UVa, but I also tend to root against UNC and VPISU in various sports. That tends to happen with rivalries. Not too wild about Maryland, either. But I don't define myself by the teams I root against.

Very hard season to understand, especially when you consider that the Stanford women's team is so good that it would be a waste of their time to play the National Team Indoors and be forced to hobnob with the hoi polloi like UNC, USC, UCLA, Georgia, et al. (you know, the teams that are ranked way ahead of Stanford at the end of the season).

It's hard to knock Gibbs too much. It's almost as if she's unfocused this college spring. You could argue her attention is on turning pro, especially watching how Burdette is doing on the WTA tour. Maybe she's even a little bored.

Gibbs is ranked in the top 200 in the world. She reached the final of an ITF event in February. This past week, in her 3rd pro event of the year, she beat the #2 seed and #109 ranked player and Gibbs reached the finals in doubles.

From a practical standpoint, the only college tennis event that really matters to her is the NCAA singles in order to solidify her WC for the US Open.

I see your point on the rest of the team. It's as if they had no Plan B when Burdette turned pro. Counting her at #2, they had a strong top 6. Without her, everyone moves up and they become weak at #6.

Is Ahn ever going to be 100% again? She's played a main draw match at the US Open, after earning her way through the qualies.

Former Cardinal standout Kandath was double bageled by Aubone in the qualies of the Florida future.

I wouldn't consider Kandath a standout. Very mediocre college record at 57-57. A lot of those wins came against really weak competition. His two handed forehand and backhand the main problem, imo.

He was a Feddie favorite though.

How far has Stanford fallen though for real. They might have some talented young guys but nobody is discussing them even as a top 15 team this year. And it's been that way for a little while now.

Stanford and Pacific about 20 minutes away from serving it up - Live Scoring/Video.

Looks like Stanford will be going with Morrissey, Ho, Romanowicz, Paige, Strobel, and Tsodikov in singles. Ho must have upped his game a bunch to get moved up to 2.

#52. I think they are better than that but will need to get some good wins here soon. Their scheduling the last few years has been abysmal. Not very many chances to get some quality wins outside of the Pac 12.

they are top 10 team potentially. should do well in NCAA tournament in May

Seriously Stanford's schedule is horrendously made. A bunch of useless matches and then the big ones vs USC and UCLA. There's no wiggle room. SEC teams have tons if matches vs teams in the 15-40 range meaning they have plenty of chances to get wins to get that ranking high. Stanford does not. Instead of Furman, get VCU to come west etc. you are Stanford you should be able to schedule matches against anyone you want.

Sounds like a program where the coach does not trouble himself to get on the ball and do the things that develop players, including scheduling.

Could be dangerous if they get in. Obviously have to sweep non PAC12 big boys. Wins over other three not impossible.

The schedule has painted you into a corner. You aren't beating UCLA or USC. Already lost to Cal 7-0. Washington is ranked 72 beating them will mean nothing. Arizona is Unranked. Utah is 53. Even if you beat Oregon and Boise State that's only two good wins. I don't think that's enough to get into the top 45.

You know your stuff Clemson tennis. Only thing I can say is Card had a chance earlier against the Bruins without the reinforcements.

I would have loved to have seen what woulda happened had the rain not come that day. It was probably Stanford's one "play out if their mind" day. Who knows if the Card could have held on but woulda been great to see.

they ve now ins
only vs Furman, Hawaii, Washington, Pacific

and the 0-7 loss vs California looks even worser now.
Their low schedule should bring back them somewhen into Top65 i think
but to get higher they must surprise Cal, Ucla or USC or get a win over Boise (this should be possible..also Boise looks much deeper on the Pos. 4 to 6)

Sadly for Standford, this is one of Tulsa's weaker teams from over the passed years. I'm ****ed cause I picked Standford. Not good.

Very disappointing loss for Stanford - where do they go from here.

Hypothetical Stanford AD Mikej sees two possible paths

1) fire this coach, don't care about his history as a player and assistant coach at stanford, no one is inspired to play for him and no top recruits believe anyone gets better at stanford anymore - first round NCAA losses are the new normal, two years in a row

2) combine the stanford varsity and club tennis teams, because they are approaching the same level the past couple years

Stanford knew this one was going to be tough. Tulsa is better team than they seem.

Where do they go from here ? NCAA team championship Next year, THAT is where. 3 of the top 10 blue chip coming to Stanford next year. It doesn't get any better than that.

Hate to put a damper on your enthusiasm, but only Fawcett is a top ten. Hsu is no longer on the list (probably because he hasn't played in enough tournaments), and Wilczynski is 33. http://www.tennisrecruiting.net/list.asp?id=1145&sessionid=5FFA77AC4D7E5D88
