STANFORD, Calif.- No. 7 Stanford cruised past No. 13 California in Berkeley on Saturday afternoon, winning its seventh straight game to close out the regular season and earning a share of the Pac-10 championship in the process.
For the first time since being crowned co-champions with UCLA in 2006, the Cardinal (18-5, 5-1 Pac-10) has finished atop the league standings. Despite being upset by UCLA yesterday, USC (19-3, 5-1 Pac-10) also grabbed a share and is locked in as the Pac-10's automatic qualifier because the Trojans defeated Stanford 5-2 back on Apr. 2.
Saturday's victory over California (12-7, 3-3 Pac-10) was even sweeter considering Stanford avenged a 4-3 home loss to the Golden Bears in late February, on of three hard-fought 4-3 defeats on the Cardinal's ledger this year.
Stanford swept all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead, clinching the point following an 8-3 victory from the rookie pairing of Matt Kandath and Denis Lin at the No. 3 spot.
The Cardinal continued to roll in singles play, officially securing the match after Alex Clayton tallied a 7-5, 6-2 triumph at the No. 3 position.
Next up for Stanford is the Pac-10 Championships on Apr. 22-25 in Ojai, Calif.
