STANFORD, Calif.- No. 7 Stanford cruised past No. 13 California in Berkeley on Saturday afternoon, winning its seventh straight game to close out the regular season and earning a share of the Pac-10 championship in the process.

For the first time since being crowned co-champions with UCLA in 2006, the Cardinal (18-5, 5-1 Pac-10) has finished atop the league standings. Despite being upset by UCLA yesterday, USC (19-3, 5-1 Pac-10) also grabbed a share and is locked in as the Pac-10's automatic qualifier because the Trojans defeated Stanford 5-2 back on Apr. 2.

Saturday's victory over California (12-7, 3-3 Pac-10) was even sweeter considering Stanford avenged a 4-3 home loss to the Golden Bears in late February, on of three hard-fought 4-3 defeats on the Cardinal's ledger this year.

Stanford swept all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead, clinching the point following an 8-3 victory from the rookie pairing of Matt Kandath and Denis Lin at the No. 3 spot.

The Cardinal continued to roll in singles play, officially securing the match after Alex Clayton tallied a 7-5, 6-2 triumph at the No. 3 position.

Next up for Stanford is the Pac-10 Championships on Apr. 22-25 in Ojai, Calif.

I'd emphasize CO-Champions - which I still think is a bit of a hollow victory at that. Yes they have the same conference record as USC, but didn't USC kind of have their way with Stanford a couple weeks ago - thus being a tie-breaker of sorts?

Even though Arizona and Washington finished with 2 conference wins (in theory tied) - Washington had their way with Arizona head-to head...

Regardless - on to Ojai,

What's up with Alex moving down? Thacher has played ahead of Clayton the last 3 matches.

Alex was in the slump. Coach moved him down a spot to gain some confidence in the 3rd spot and we will see how alex does in Pac-10 championships. and the final lineups will be made for NCAA tournament. Nothing is written in stone at the moment. :) Goal is win the NCAA, how it happens and who plays where doesn't matter at this point. but if Alex does well in Pac-10 tournament then he will be moved back to 2nd spot.

Fedace >>> Beating Cal does not mean an NCAA Championship is imminent. Relax, there is no need to go into a frenzy!

What is going on with Kandath? He wasn't even in that singles lineup and last time I checked he was losing a decent number of matches

In junior days, critics were talking about Thacher like he is the next coming of Goran Ivanisevic. He is that talented....

You still have not learned. Let's review. Bruch is like Roddick, Suropol is the next Chang, Clayton is like Federer. I'm sure there's been other wild comparisons. What would be more realistic is something like "Thacher is like Salzenstien or Hirshman is like Goldstein" at best.

Keep it real Feddie.

Nostradamus... I mean Fedace tried this thread after his other classic "what happened to Stanford..." thread was deleted.

He should start another.
