Being a Card fan I don’t want to sound negative but the reality is it’s not good enough to recruit the best talent. It really depends on what intent that talent shows while at the program. Of the current lot only Blokhina has been playing the pro circuit. Everyone else has summer internships. Compare this to other programs where many players have pro goals. That’s an intangible that’s missing at Stanford. Don’t get me wrong, they had an outstanding season by any measure but they will have trouble scaling the summit because they lack intent. I think the writing’s on the wall. Even women’s basketball at Stanford has been dislodged from its top perch, arguably a more decorated program than Card women’s tennis.

Brutal loss for Stanford yesterday. I'm not going to pile on of certain individuals with "quirky" imaginations.

I will give UGA tremendous credit for what they did yesterday. They seemed to have wanted it more than Stanford.

Additionally, I talked with a few coaches and they were a little confused that UGA women's haven't gotten more credit for their success this year. Nobody really talked about them winning this tournament as people were focused on other programs. They only SEC regular season and tournament, yet, a lot felt they (as well as TAMU) were underseeded. A lot of that is likely due to scheduling and random bad loss.

Doubles has been a weakness for Card in recent years. It is such a momentum boost to win that point. It would be so beneficial for Mike and Bob Bryan as alumni to spend some time working with the team on this for a few weeks every year !

Having said that, in addition to doubles this year‘s team have been so reliant on the top 3 who have done a pretty good job but if one of them goes down the lower order simply haven’t been locks when they need it most.

Great idea, although Mike moved out to Florida, too. Would be smart to fly them out for a clinic.

well, not bad...4 out of 5 Stanford (M and W) players advanced out of the first round. For the women, wasn't sure how they would bounce back after a disappointing loss in the team quarterfinals.

watching the dubs on espn+, but what kind of onscreen tennis scoring system can't show a tie-breaker score?? Crazy.

No easy path to the Individual Singles final. Ma will play Georgia's No. 1, Vidmanova, who defeated Blake in the team tournament. Yep scheduled to play Ohio State's No. 2 player, Perry.

I know both players can pull out victories...Let's Go Card!

Vidmanova the scourge of the Card top 3, with wins over Yep, Blake and now Ma in the past year. Interestingly each of our players lost to her in straight sets ,each collecting a total of 7 games against her ..

It will be interesting to see what Stanford does with their 8 women's scholarships for next year. At this point, every top team can only sign players from overseas or the transfer portal. Stanford has not done much with either of those routes recently.

Stanford has a great top 6 lined up for next year (Ma, Yepifanova, Blokhina, Hui, Xu, Glozman). Blake, Geller, and Houghton are departing. What comes after the top 6?

Could reward Emma Sun with a scholarship after paying her own way for two years. If someone is injured, does she win at #6 against a good team? Will the 8th scholarship go to a late overseas signee, as will be the case with many NCAA teams?

You forgot Xu who’s certain to play. The odd person out is Yu who is in the portal on her way to another program. Also the most likely awardee of that scholarship would be a grad transfer. This year they got Okpara who had played at the top of the Dartmouth lineup. Don’t know if she’s now out of eligibility. In any case Stanford is more likely to use the grad transfer route if they haven’t already announced an overseas signing. I don’t believe there are shortcuts to last minute maneuvering there.

I believe Houghton may be staying another year.

Did she have a redshirt year? She missed the COVID year, but I see she only played in the fall of 2022 and not the spring of 2023 due to injury. Stanford probably applied for a medical redshirt as a result, giving her one more year.

Yu should be getting as much playing time as she wants, will likely play #3-4, somewhere there. Duke has potentially 3 girl leaving and only 1 Blue chip coming in....LOL i don't think they are gonna be any better than princeton or harvard next year
Feddie, this thread isn’t for pointing out that the Stanford men are rarely better than Princeton or Harvard nowadays - it’s for celebrating a variety of young men and women recently realizing that the Gothic Wonderland is a lot more fun place to be a student athlete than Taco Bell U

Lol at Taco Bell U

I’m biased against the “gothic wonderland” but why do you say that?
