Stan's searing attack on president Novak

It would have been easy for Djokovic to use Gimelstob as a scapegoat and throw him under the bus to score some cheap PR points

Or maybe there is some part of him who still believes Gimelstob is innocent? Who knows?

There is nothing wrong with Djokovic being silent now

If Djokovic admitted he made a mistake in supporting JG, no one is going to claim he threw JG under the bus

Even JG now admits what he did was wrong . And you are saying Djokovic yet could find him innocent?

I’m surprised that people are actually CRITICIZING Stan for speaking out. I applaud him. More people should speak out, specifically against the shamefully slow process of dismissing Gimelstob. There should be no place in leadership anywhere, be it government, business, sports or whatever for violent criminals like Gimelstob. Yes, ppl get into altercations, but when you have a history of physically threatening ppl, assaulting your wife and punching a guy while he is on the ground 50 times it should be clear as day this guy is a horrible human being. How could the ATP Board and other governance bodies not dismiss him on the spot? It’s shocking. That Djokovic, the president of the Player’s Council continued to support JG just to have his vote is appalling. I would never want to see Djokovic in any type of leadership role again.

For those who are criticizing Wawrinka for dating Donna Vekic and leaving his wife and child for her... yes it doesn’t look great, but from my Google search it looks like he had split with his wife once already back in 2011 due to the challenges of his traveling as a touring pro and her being a Swiss television presenter, and then they got back together only to split again in 2015 when he started dating Vekic who was 19 at the time. It looks like he and his ex-wife were not a good fit, they tried and failed. Not quite the same thing as being a wife beater like Gimelstob.

Yeah, I'm frequently amazed that anyone even thinks it's their business to comment on others personal lives, especially when the targets go out of their way to keep their privacy. We're not talking about f-en Kardashians.

...Djokovic has always struggled with poor judgment. Look at how he hired and fired coaches including his rock Vajda...

I’m glad you pointed out the elephant in the room. Yes, just terrible choices. He has no idea how to manage his tennis career. Which explains his extremely poor career results although by some total fluke he sits among the GOATs and potentially could sit at the top.

I admit to never following tennis organizational politics too closely. At all...

Neither did most of TT nor 100% of the general public.

Except as far as TT posters if from time to time one of their heroes  was involved with governance and some matter made the news then the respective toddler fan bases would move into action and use the governance activity as a pretext to attack the player they didn’t favor or support the player they did.

Raul Ramirez was a great player who never gets any play on TT.

ATP handled this issue as it is routinely handled. With a pending process there is a presumption of innocence and there are no actions until the process is over. If found guilty, such position becomes untenable and resignation is in order and most elegant solution. Djokovic did not do anything wrong in this case. Everything happened as it should.

Dr. Pangloss would be proud.

Agreed.

Raul - when I was young - was among my faves, and he's probably still my favorite (though not the best, he was very good) doubles player.

Djokovic has made it clear recently that he can't play politics and tennis at the same time.
God knows why he's even trying to. Like, just win at tennis dude. When he's done enough of that he can think about trying to catch Fed's off-court success. Good luck to him with that lol

Honestly finding it hilarious that suddenly everyone cares about the morality of people in the ATP governing structure.

What Gimelstob did had been known for months and it wasn't a big deal then. But now that it can be used to attack Djokovic, it's completely disgraceful

LOL

I haven't read most of the posts of this thread and I will not. I wouldn't bother responding to them if I were you. Novak is my least favourite big 3 member, yet I can't help but notice that there has been quite a few unfair criticism of him on this forum of late.

You’ve done absolutely everything but write the actual words. Anyway, I find your “I am not a lawyer so I can’t understand 1+1=2” statement completely fake. This day and age nobody is that ignorant unless they want to be. I find the agenda behind it really despicable.
Completely untrue. I'm just concerned with the technical correctness of what is being said; I'm not defending his character in any way. Like how some articles on otherwise respectable sites call Gimelstob a "convicted felon" and that is just technically incorrect. He's plead it down to a misdemeanor

I'm much more appalled by how Gimelstob's tenuous association with Djokovic has been used by Novak haters to assassinate the latter's character. Reading the thread you would think Djokovic himself joined in and personally helped JG beat up this man

Djokovic haters are jumping on anything in desperation to try to paint him in a bad light. I guess surpassing Stan's entire career in a matter of 6 months after he was wrote off for dead will do that to some people. However, cream always rises to the top.

Why play the victim role? You are quite clearly insecure to compare Novak success next to Stan's ... not to mention that the later won all of his Slams beating Novak.
For some reason, Djokovic made a very questionable call to back up a shady person. He needs to take responsibility. Everyone makes mistakes...

Stan has spoke out against Nadal and his on court coaching, against Mirka and her antics and now against Djokovic. I think its fair to say that he is a straight forward person and doesnt hold back against anyone.

The hypocrisy and Insecurity here is so ovbious it's just sad.
I mean you could always just stop throwing shade at Stan before calling out others who are doing the same thing to Novak here. The guy had the courage to speak out while everyone's being tight-lipped about the matter.

You're obviously triggered so I guess what I said is true and hit a nerve. What victim role? Don't project your own feelings on me. Also, I am not comparing Stan's success to Novak's in that sense because there is no comparison since you have to multiply Stan's career times 5 and it still doesn't reach his. I am pointing out that Djokovic haters are upset about his success after they said he was done, and using this non-story as some faux outrage.

There is a case here. Novak is visibly on the wrong side of it. A top player comes out and speaks about it. Instead of using facts about the curent situation you somehow feel the need to bring out Novak's resume, which is a clear easy win but with no purpose. How is that not being insecure about your guy? I am not a hater. Just because Novak made a mistake doesnt make him a horrible person ....

Because his resume is relevant in that sense since I read this site very well when Djokovic was struggling and how much some of these outraged posters enjoyed it. Now that Djokovic is back to #1 and won the last 3 Slams, now they are complaining 24/7 again and have a problem with everything Djokovic including his political views relating to the sport he plays. I have no reason to be insecure in relation to Stan since his career is not even close to Djokovic's so once again maybe you are projecting your own feelings.

So many dumb opinions in this thread.
-Djoker was elected to this position, if the players think he screwed up, he’ll be out. Pretty simple.
-Stan chose not to be involved (like Fed and Rafa) and is now in full sour grapes mode. He’s free to voice his opinion but it’s just 1 guy’s opinion. If he wants to have a bigger voice and people agree with him, he should runnfornthr council
- Gimmel is trash and Djoker never should have been con’d into supporting him. But as Pepe shows, Djoker can be talked into some dumb decisions...

Can someone tell me all the things Gimmelstob has done wrong? Is this still about him punching someone? Pretty sure that pro athletes have gotten into fight more often

Jeremy Clarkson 'punched someone'. Gimmelstob hit a guy upwards of fifty times and the stress of the attack made the man's wife have a miscarriage.
Who is Stan's ghost writer? No way did Stan write that letter.

Just because your guy struggles to string words together in English doesn't mean all players do.

...This was clearly a coup against a good leader, engineered by a player flexing his newfound muscle behind the scenes to achieve personal objectives and settle personal scores.

The winner of this months creative writing competition will be announced shortly. Thank you for your impressive submission.

Have you heard Stan speak English? When he got married he called his wife his concubine!

".......Stan Wawrinka (or a very good ghost) has fired off a letter to the Times and Roger Federer has suggested that Chris Kermode – whom Djokovic and Gimelstob successfully levered out of his job in charge of the ATP – might now be “back in the mix”.

I did not believe for one second that Stan wrote that letter; even the Guardian agrees with me.

Novak Djokovic

‘I think from a players’ standpoint, players need to get informed, need to understand what the situation is because every player that is added to that group is a positive contribution to evolution of the sport.

‘But I did not agree that he went out in the media, posting a letter before speaking out to the guys from the council. And I’ve told him that and I understand his views, of course. There are a lot of fair points that he makes. From the other side, I think there is maybe a different way that that could be done in terms of communication.

‘But Stan and I always had a very honest and open relationship where we said what we think about each other or situation without any problems and that’s what I respect about our relationship.

‘That is why we have always been very good friends off the court as well and as much as we are rivals on the court. And we made a photo after that, a selfie smiling so it’s all good.’

There's obviously more than that in the article.

Intrigue.

IMO the issue here is JG has previous that has been swept under the carpet, so it is not just his recent conviction but the fact this is not the first time, his misogynistic attack on WTA players being a prime example, taken from Wiki:

On June 17, 2008, when Gimelstob was a guest on the Washington, DC, morning radio show "The Sports Junkies",[39] he said that when he faced Anna Kournikova the following month in an exhibition match in Washington: "I’m going to serve it right at the body, about 128 [mph], right into her midriff. If she's not crying by the time she comes off court then I did not do my job." Asked if that meant he hated the Russian, with whom he trained as a youth, he replied, "She is a *****. Hate is a very strong word. I just despise her to the maximum level just below hate." He also added that he would not like to sleep with Kournikova "because she's such a ******." Instead, "I wouldn't mind having my younger brother, who's a kind of a stud, nail her and then reap the benefits of that."[40] In the same interview, he referred to French tennis player Tatiana Golovin as a "sexpot", Czech player Nicole Vaidisova as a "well developed young lady", and French player Alize Cornet as a "little sexpot".[41]

Also in 2008, Gimelstob told Out Magazine: "'The locker room couldn’t be a more homophobic place,' he says. 'We’re not gay-bashing. There’s just a lot of positive normal hetero talk about pretty girls and working out and drinking beer. That’s why people want to be pro athletes!'"[42]

In 2010, Gimelstob was suspended from his Tennis Channel commentating duties for comments he made about President Barack Obama.[43]

In 2016, Gilmelstob's wife Cary sought a restraining order against him, alleging that he “physically assaulted, harassed, verbally attacked, and stole” from her.[44]

In November 2018, Gimelstob was charged with assault after being accused of repeatedly striking Randall Kaplan while the venture capitalist, his wife and their two-year-old daughter were trick-or-treating on Halloween. West Los Angeles.[45][46] Gimelstob denied the accusations.[47]. Gilmelstob later changed his plea to "no contest" to a felony battery charge, and was sentenced to three years’ probation and 60 days of community labor.[48] Such was the ferocity of the violent, unprovoked attack, the wife of the victim attributed the miscarriage of her unborn child to the stress of witnessing the attack.[49]
