In Federer's career, he has reached 158 tournament semifinals, including 34 at Grand Slams, 10 at ATP Year End Finals, 49 at Masters 1000, and 65 at other tournaments.

When he reaches the semifinals of a Grand Slam, he has won it 50% of the time, 60% of the time at the ATP Year End Finals, 43% at Masters 1000, and 52% at all other tournaments.

Fed overachieved at slams with great assistance from Rafa's injuries.

Hey in this case, Sampras underperformed even more.

You do realise that they weren't compulsory in the 1990s, yes, and that some other tournaments like San Jose or Tokyo Outdoor weren't that far behind when it came to ranking points?

Your statistics are faulty since you must compare his performance in tournaments of the same surface.

He has reached 19 HC slam semis and won 9 of those events... 47%.
He has reached 32 HC masters semis and won 15 of them... 47%.

7 clay slam semis and won 1 of them... 14%.
17 clay masters semis and won 6 of them... 35%.

By my numbers, he has performed worse in slams.

The reason his masters count isn't as high as one might guess are:
1) No grass masters and
2) He has skipped a lot of masters tournaments, especially during his prime
