She twisted her ankle down 11-12. It didn't seem to bother her that much until 6-7 in the 2nd set, when she was visibly limping during points(guess there was no trainer in those days) She started hitting drop shots very early in the points from that point on, producing some pretty entertaining tennis with Court sprinting forward, then King lobbing her, etc. King was always serving 2nd in that set, she saved a match point at 6-7 & 4 more at 9-10, before losing on the 5th mp of that game.
King had knee surgery shortly after this match & missed the USO, its a shame these 2 couldn't have had a rematch there, esp with so much on the line(Court going for the GS)
I have trouble imagining a player today completing this match with the injuries King was dealing with that day. Though maybe if there was a trainer back then he would have advised her against continuing. Court also had issues, she received cortisone injection on her ankle prior to the match.
There were 328 points played that day, while the 5 set men's final(Newcombe-Rosewall) that year had only 301 points. Guess the women deserved equal prize money that year.
